You will join Prof. John’s team and work with data resources such as the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databanks at Swansea University. Academic duties The Welsh Centre for Emergency Medicine Research offers exposure to a full range of research activities. The Centre undertakes quite detailed laboratory based work in the form of preclinical modelling, and a large range of both clinical and epidemiological studies. Although the candidate will be exposed to a wide range of research activities, the candidate will be encouraged to focus on an area or study of their choice. This role will give the candidate the opportunity to gain a wider understanding of research methodology and trial design (i.e. statistical design, hypothesis generating concepts). There is also the opportunity for those who are interested to undertake training in laboratory based research in clinically related studies (i.e. preclinical modelling of disease and treatment evaluation). Clinical duties This job will provide the candidate with the opportunity to consolidate pre-existing Emergency Medicine experience and develop a clinical portfolio for future applications in Emergency Medicine or their chosen specialty. The job will involve the prompt assessment and treatment of undifferentiated patients in all areas within the emergency department. The successful candidates will initially join the full shift 20 slot junior rota working 50% of a clinical slot with the remaining 50% time dedicated to research activities. Current full slot averages approximately 45 hours per week with 2:4 weekends. Suitable candidates can progress within the department to middle grade rota if desired. Professor Richard Bracken at the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work on an Innovate UK funded project that compares the impact of organic or synthetic vitamin supplementation on meal replacement shakes that impact on indices of human health.

The role will require experience of local ethical approvals, sponsor management and trial registrations; operating in a laboratory research facility; working with human participants in a human laboratory setting; participant recruitment strategies; safely taking blood samples and processing blood samples for analysis and perform key variable analysis.

The successful candidate must possess an MSc (by research) or be pursuing a PhD in biochemistry, biomedical sciences, human nutrition science, human metabolism, human biology/physiology, exercise science), or near its completion. Evidence of the ability to actively engage in and contribute to writing and publishing research papers, particularly for refereed journals is essential, as is a demonstrable ability to conduct research in line with the objectives of the project. Candidates must also have some experience in biochemical analyses and be committed to learning new techniques.

We are looking to appoint a suitably qualified member of staff to undertake the role of Science/Laboratory Technician. Experience in Biology and Physics would be advantageous.
