A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week. This is one of five multi-million-pound Defra-funded crop improvement schemes which aim to improve crop resistance to environmental and biological challenges, thereby increased food production sustainability and climate-proofing the future development of agriculture.

VeGIN at HAU focusses on identifying tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought, waterlogging, salinity and extremes of temperature, with the ultimate goal of creating future-proof vegetable varieties and strengthening food security.

We are looking for a dedicated research assistant to optimise and utilising phenotyping methodologies to screen a range of vegetable crop populations for beneficial traits in glasshouse and controlled environment settings. This includes optimal root system architecture, nutrient use efficiency, bolting, drought and heat tolerance. The researcher will then extract RNA from selected plant samples to allow us to investigate the underlying genetic basis of these traits.

The post is available on a fixed-term full-time contract for a duration of up to five years. We would be looking for the role to commence in January 2025.

This role will be based on-site. There is very limited scope for remote working in this role.

The department is introducing Digital Pathology, and we are looking for a person to lead the scanning of slides. You will be responsible for ensuring the slides are scanned in a timely manner and are of appropriate quality. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the scanners are operating efficiently and effectively Assist senior BMS staff with the supervision and training of Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA).

The successful applicant must possess a relevant qualification along with previous clinical laboratory experience. Candidates should hold either the NVQ Level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Support, or IBMS certificate of achievement Part II, or an equivalent qualification in a relevant science based subject.

Participation in the rota is compulsory, including weekend, bank holiday early and late shifts.

The post is based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital although candidates may be required to cover absences across sitesincluding RJAH.

As an Associate Practitioner you will work in collaboration with Biomedical Scientists and other colleagues assisting in the provision of a diagnostic service.
• You will mainly be involved in the day to day running of the slide scanners and ensuring the quality and efficiency of the scanning is maintained.
• You will be responsible for the daily maintenance of the scanners and ensuring that the outputs are of high quality
• You will also work in all areas of the Histology Laboratory and be involved in provision of the technical service.
• You will be checking that the correct sample type has been received, correct sample labelling and suitability for diagnostic investigations, in accordance with Pathology laboratory policies and standard operating procedures.
• You will be inputting data on the laboratory computer system and trouble shooting issues that may arise. Perform an increasing range of laboratory tests, many of which are of a non-routine nature, requiring experience, theoretical and technical knowledge.

The Department of Gastroenterology provides a service to the county of Shropshire and Mid Wales and currently consists of 9 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 1 Consultant Hepatologists working across both hospital sites.

The main towns include: Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Whitchurch (in Shropshire); Newport, Telford and Wellington (in Telford & Wrekin); and Newtown and Welshpool (in Powys) – all beautiful and unique.
Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury which are located 20 minutes’ drive apart. Together they provide 99% of our activity. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week. The job plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external and will include personal objectives, detailing links to wider service improvements and trust strategic priorities.

For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided on average per week (pro-rata for a part time post) as:

· 5.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care - includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable and unpredictable emergency work. Clinic templates are for 3.5 hours to allow 0.5 hours for additional clinic related admin (phone calls, time to admit from clinic) within the 1 PA allocated.

· 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - includes CPD, audit, teaching and research. 1.5 of these will be to support revalidation. The remaining are to be directed at Trust priorities and might include educational supervision, lead roles, and other activities to be reviewed annually as part of the job planning process. SPA time sufficient for quality assurance activities will be provided. Consultants may carry out a maximum of one SPA session off site at a time suited to their individual timetable and in keeping with the requirements of the activities. Direct Clinical Care PA time will be sufficient to deal with the clinical admin generated by inpatient, outpatient and endoscopic activity

· 2 PA’s for Research - The research activity which may include delivery of portfolio research, development of own research ideas/protocols, working with current research fellows and supporting the development of an embedded research culture at SaTH.

· Out of Hours Activity - There will be a requirement to take part in an on call rota primarily for GI bleeds with a frequency of approximately 1 in 8. Weekend on call will require on site input on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as an on call from home to advise on other Gastroenterological cases emergencies at other times.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be subject to adjustment when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with other consultant colleagues.
