The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral research associate for a duration of 3-years who will work on the generation of virtual sound images for multiple listeners. This will involve the further development of systems for delivering binaural sound via loudspeakers for a limited number of listeners (e.g., 2-5) and on the optimisation of multiple loudspeaker outputs for large audiences (e.g., 50-200). We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. (or equivalent professional qualification and experience) in acoustical engineering and/or audio signal processing. The successful candidate will have demonstratable experience in undertaking both experiments and computer simulations in acoustics and/or signal processing as evidenced by publications in top-tier conferences and journals. The work will contribute to a larger EPSRC funded project entitled “Challenges in Immersive Audio Technology” (CIAT) that is being conducted in a collaboration between King’s College London and the Universities of Southampton and Surrey.
This post is offered on a full time, fixed term basis due to funding restrictions.

The ISVR has been at the forefront of sound and vibration research and education since its inception nearly 60 years ago. The Institute has built an international reputation through pioneering academic research and strong and enduring collaborations with industry. The ISVR has excellent experimental facilities including anechoic and reverberation chambers and multiple audio laboratories.
The ISVR is part of the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton, which is one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering research. The School has an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad.
Applications for this position will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
