About the role
Oxford University Museum of Natural History is seeking a Museum Research Fellow to undertake independent collections-focused research in palaeobiology, in an area that is aligned with the research interests of the Museum and the palaeobiology community in Oxford (https://palaeobiology.web.ox.ac.uk).

The Museum Research Fellow will undertake original research, enhance the collections through field collection and/or documentation and digitisation, disseminate the research findings through conference presentations and publication, contribute to the public engagement work of the Museum, and undertake some University teaching.

The post will be supported by a research allowance of £7,500 per annum, and it is hoped that a non-stipendiary association with a college will supplement this research fellowship.

The Research Fellow will be assigned a mentor to support and enhance career development during their fellowship.

This is a full time position working 37.5 hours per week. The post is fixed term for three years.

The successful candidate will have an excellent research and publication record for their career stage, and an ambitious, independent, and viable research plan.

We are hiring a full-time research associate to work on the BELINDYSYS research project, based at the Department of Computer Science. Under the supervision of Professor James Worrell, you will have responsibility for carrying out research on algorithmic questions on linear dynamical systems and extensions thereof, such as holonomic sequences and piecewise affine maps. This work draws on connections with a number of areas of computer science and mathematics, including verification, control theory, logic, and number theory. We will support your career development, through supporting your scientific work, and also through attendance to conferences, student supervision and supporting applications for personal fellowships, as appropriate.

You will hold a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics or related discipline. You will possess either knowledge or a strong interest in in one or more of the following areas: linear recurrences, holonomic sequences, matrix semigroups, and algebraic geometry. Experience of actively developing research outputs such as publications is required.

NUFFIELD DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS, RHEUMATOLOGY AND MUSCULOSKELETAL SCIENCES (NDORMS)

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Bioinformatics (172445)

The Kennedy Institute at the University of Oxford has an exciting opening for an experienced bioinformatician to join the group of Associate Professor Stephen Sansom (https://sansomlab.org). In this core-funded role you will lead the development of pipelines and tools for the analysis of data from cutting-edge single cell and spatial genomics platforms such as the 10x Chromium and Nanostring CosMx. You will have the opportunity to work with students and postdocs from the Kennedy’s world-leading research groups both to provide bioinformatics training and to make contributions to publications in high impact journals. Researchers at the KIR are using cutting-edge approaches to investigate the immune system and the cellular causes of diseases such as atheroschlerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis (https://www.kennedy.ox.ac.uk/research/research-groups).

You should have an established track record of code development and contributions to publications or submitted manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals that demonstrates your bioinformatics expertise. A PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in a discipline of direct relevant to bioinformatics and genomic research is essential. In this role, you will undertake code development, provide bioinformatics training and perform scientific research developing and acquiring relevant skills as necessary. You will share code with the bioinformatics community, publishing tools and results in peer-reviewed journals. A good understanding of single-cell/spatial genomics data analysis is essential. The Cragg lab alongside other groups within Oxford (Wade-Martins and Magill), London (Kittler) and Germany (Liss) are conducting a collaborative Wellcome funded research project to explore the physiological roles of Ca2+ in dopamine transmission to gain insights into the potentially toxic roles of Ca2+ in Parkinson’s disease.

This project will exploit state-of-the-art tools to understand the roles of Ca2+ influx, storage and signalling within dopamine axons in wild-type animal models of Parkinson’s. This project will compare the Ca2+ biology across striatal territories to improve our understanding of the role of Ca2+ in health and disease. Our recently published data suggests that the roles of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are dynamically regulated across striatal territories in a manner that correlates with risk factors of Parkinson’s [REF].

In this project we will develop a better understanding of the downstream coupling of Ca2+ to mitochondrial function to better understand the selective vulnerability of a subset of DA neurons in Parkinson’s, and potentially identify druggable targets that could neuroprotective potential in the treatment of Parkinson’s. We are now seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a strong interest in Ca2+ biology to join us as part of this exciting collaboration.

Duties include contributing to overseeing the management and genotyping of animal model colonies and parkinsonian models; adapting existing and developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocols; testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate; contributing ideas for new research projects and developing ideas for generating research income.

You will have a strong background in electrophysiological and/or electrochemical and/or photometry techniques, to investigate neural circuits or synapses of the central nervous system. Applicants must hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant area of neurobiological research.
