University College London Hospitals (UCLH) undertakes world-class research across many specialities including early phase, cancer, haematology, and neurology. As a senior research pharmacy technician (or Science Manufacturing Technician) you will be part of the pharmacy clinical trials team facilitating this research. Your key role is to set up new studies, maintain current and historical studies, and oversee the storage and receipt of clinical trials medicines. You will also be an important part of the team providing a high-quality dispensary service to our patients.


The postholder will acquire a broad overview of injectable research medicines, research delivery, dispensary management, and research governance, therefore would suit anyone with an interest in these areas. Prior experience of clinical trials or hospital pharmacy is desirable but not required.

Ideally you will be a GPhC registered pharmacy technician with 1-2 years’ experience although all training and support will be provided by our supportive team including our education & training lead. Those wishing to enrol on formal training courses can do so via external (on application) and in-house learning & development programmes.

The post-holder is responsible for the set-up of clinical trials run at UCLH and must oversee the accurate receipt of medicines from clinical trial sponsors (who supply the medicines), and storage of those medicines in a way that is safe, traceable, and accountable. They will be supported by pharmacy assistants with dispensing of medicines for clinical trial use and have direct face to face contact with patients enquiring about our services.


The core skills required include an attention to detail, good organisation skills, computer skills and good communications skills.
They will support the Principal Pharmacy Technician – Research and Clinical Trials in meeting objectives towards maintaining and developing the pharmacy clinical trial service across the Trust.

The Rheumatology Research Team at University College London Hospital (UCLH) is expanding and are seeking two Band 5 Nurses to join the team. This role offers an opportunity to enter the exciting filed of clinical research without prior research experience. If you are passionate about patient care and eager to contribute to the advancement of clinical knowledge in rheumatology, we would love to hear from you.

The Rheumatology Research Department works on a portfolio of UCLH sponsored and hosted studies. We recruit to studies for adult and adolescent patients with inflammatory conditions. You will be supported to develop your clinical research nursing skills to recruit participants to rheumatology research projects following Good Clinical Practice and data protection guidelines, as well as national and local standard operating procedures.
Current studies include interventional trials of medicinal products (Phase I to IV) and observational projects.

The successful candidate will work closely with clinicians and academics in a close-knit team of research nurses and coordinators. They will be expected to develop their clinical skills and knowledge to support participants with study participation.

This is a varied role suitable for a highly proficient person with great communication skills who enjoys working across multiple projects in a collaborative manner. Candidates should be proficient computer users and have an interest in clinical research and rheumatology.
• The successful candidate will work according to Good Clinical Practice, relevant professional standards and guidelines to recruit to and manage a portfolio of clinical research studies.
• Act as a patient advocate, promote wellbeing needs and support patients through their clinical research journey.
• Assist with patient recruitment, screening and conducting study visits for research participants, including patient assessment, data collection sample collection (including phlebotomy) and sample processing, monitoring of adverse reactions and compliance.
• Assist with day to day coordination of clinical trials and studies, including management of study documents, data collection and study consumables.
• Ensure study protocols and procedures are adhered to in accordance with local practice and GCP guidelines.

Research Nurse - Lymphoma and Myeloproliferative Neoplams Trials Team

The Research Nurse is an autonomous specialist working within the multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will take responsibility for the co-ordination and management of a clinical research portfolio comprising of in-house, national and international phase II and III clinical trials in lymphoma and myeloproliferative haematology malignancies.

Responsibilities will include education of patients and colleagues, coordination of care of patients on trials, collection and preparation of biological samples, collection of trial data and monitoring of the expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.

The post holder will be expected to develop specialized skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical trials, the therapies and the relevant disease sites. The post holder will be expected to have sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patient’s advocate.

The post is clinically based to support research in all oncology and haematological malignancies, and post holders will be expected to provide cross cover for members of the team.

Cancer Services sits within the Surgery and Cancer Board. It incorporates comprehensive outpatient, day care, and ambulatory care and inpatient services for the specialities of inpatient and outpatient oncology and Haematology. The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit office is based in 250 Euston Rd and comprises of three main areas: Haematology, Oncology and Paediatric Oncology and it supports activity in the local Clinical Research Facility and the North Thames Local Comprehensive Research Network and Experimental Cancer Centre. Each group comprises teams of research nurses, clinical trial practitioners and data managers and provides support to local Investigators wishing to conduct clinical trials and other high quality clinical research projects within UCLH. Each team supports a process for agreeing a portfolio of research and ensures that trials are conducted to the highest standards and in accordance with UK legislation and the R&D Governance Framework. As a research pharmacy assistant, you will be assisting our pharmacy clinical trials team deliver world class research by maintaining the storage and receipt of clinical trials medicines across the Trust. The post-holder will be trained to assist the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Unit/Team in the accurate receipt, storage, dispensing and accountability of medicinal products (licensed or investigational) for clinical trial use across the 5 active sites within UCLH where studies are conducted. They will undertake duties as part of the Pharmacy team under the supervision of the Pharmacy Clinical Trial Technicians and or Pharmacists. They will support the Principal Pharmacist (R&D) in meeting objectives towards maintaining and developing the pharmacy clinical trial service across the Trust. They will provide support the Pharmacy Team in the provision of an efficient and high-quality service to UCL Hospitals internal and external customers. The Rheumatology Research Team at University College London Hospital (UCLH) is expanding and are seeking two Band 5 Nurses to join the team. This role offers an opportunity to enter the exciting filed of clinical research without prior research experience. If you are passionate about patient care and eager to contribute to the advancement of clinical knowledge in rheumatology, we would love to hear from you.

The Rheumatology Research Department works on a portfolio of UCLH sponsored and hosted studies. We recruit to studies for adult and adolescent patients with inflammatory conditions. You will be supported to develop your clinical research nursing skills to recruit participants to rheumatology research projects following Good Clinical Practice and data protection guidelines, as well as national and local standard operating procedures.
Current studies include interventional trials of medicinal products (Phase I to IV) and observational projects.

The successful candidate will work closely with clinicians and academics in a close-knit team of research nurses and coordinators. They will be expected to develop their clinical skills and knowledge to support participants with study participation.

This is a varied role suitable for a highly proficient person with great communication skills who enjoys working across multiple projects in a collaborative manner. Candidates should be proficient computer users and have an interest in clinical research and rheumatology.

•The successful candidate will work according to Good Clinical Practice, relevant professional standards and guidelines to recruit to and manage a portfolio of clinical research studies.
• Act as a patient advocate, promote wellbeing needs and support patients through their clinical research journey.
• Assist with patient recruitment, screening and conducting study visits for research participants, including patient assessment, data collection sample collection (including phlebotomy) and sample processing, monitoring of adverse reactions and compliance.
• Assist with day to day coordination of clinical trials and studies, including management of study documents, data collection and study consumables.
• Ensure study protocols and procedures are adhered to in accordance with local practice and GCP guidelines.
• Be proactive in establishing personal development needs and attend training courses.
• Contribute to organisation of department and creation of standard operating procedures.
• Be an effective communicator both verbally and in writing with colleagues and patients.
• Effectively manage own workload, use effective decision-making skills and evaluate the process and results.
• Liaise with external key stakeholders where appropriate.
• Assist with study set and management of designated studies.
• Participate in quality improvement projects and audit, contribute to conference posters and publications as required.
