The main role of this post is to provide scientific and technical support to all clinical departments that Imaging Physics group supports. The postholder will undertake the full range of duties within the section, assisting in the provision of highly specialised service. They will provide technical support for Quality Assurance programmes for a wide range of diagnostic radiology imaging, ultrasound and phototherapy equipment. They will develop procedures in supporting these services contributing service development and quality improvement.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 6 Clinical Technologist (Healthcare Science Practitioner) within the Imaging Physics and Radiation Protection group. You will work alongside a team of Scientists and Technologists to provide technical and scientific support delivering radiation assurance services across to several NHS Trusts.

Candidates for this post will have a degree in Physical Sciences or in a subject with a significant Physics component and have completed or are about to complete the PTP programme or have equivalent level of knowledge and experience to enable registration with The RCT. Experience of working within Imaging Physics is essential. Candidates with experience in the field which are not yet registered could be appointed at a lower band until registration.

The section is responsible for implementing ‘cradle to grave’ QA programmes on all modalities of radiological equipment, ultrasound, lasers, and UV systems. This includes assistance with equipment specification and selection, acceptance testing and commissioning, establishment of an ongoing QC programme, providing training for radiographers as necessary, and ultimately advising when equipment is no longer suitable for clinical use. The section monitors radiation doses to patients and staff, performs environmental monitoring (including radon) and specifies shielding requirements for x-ray and optical radiation facilities. It also provides radiation dose estimates for research trial submissions and radiation incidents. It leads the Trust’s internal audit programme for regulatory compliance.

An opportunity has arisen for a full time, permanent Associate Healthcare Science Practitioner to join the team in the Oxford Genetics Laboratories (OGL), a part of the Central & South Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH). The OGL operates across both the John Radcliffe and Churchill hospitals and staff may be required to work at either or both sites. Testing is offered for a range of inherited and acquired diseases in both molecular and cytogenetics, and candidates may be expected to work across the whole range of services offered in the future.

Band 4 Associate Healthcare Science Practitioners undertake a range of practical laboratory work, plus associated administrative and housekeeping tasks under the supervision of experienced Genetic Technologists or Clinical Scientists and following Standard Operating Procedures.

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate good communication and organisational skills, and the manual dexterity to perform laboratory processes, along with flexibility, efficiency and attention to detail in their work.

Some experience of practical work is essential, though full training will be given.

Associate Healthcare Science Practitioners provide technical, analytical andadministrative duties that support the administrators, technologists and clinical scientists in Specimen reception and the main laboratories of the department. They take personal responsibility for their own work, which is protocol driven, on a daily basis subject to the supervision of the section head.

They participate in defined regular duties on a rotational basis, including monitoring of work areas for health and safety and cleanliness, and are required to undertake all technical duties within a section on a rota basis and rotate through all service delivery/technical sections within the laboratory. They process a wide range of pathological specimens for a broad range of inherited conditions according to standard operating procedures, and are competent in the use of patient databases, state of the art technologies and a limited number of software packages, some of which are complex, for the analysis of data. They perform highly accurate and skilled analysis, which may have unpredictable outcomes and which require periods of concentration.

They are expected to communicate technical, scientific and confidential information to colleagues within their department in electronic, written and verbal forms.

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral neuronal cell biologist to work on a project to target calcium channels in Parkinson’s disease. The project, funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation and in collaboration with Lario Therapeutics, represents an exciting opportunity to undertake translation work at the interface between academic research and pharmaceutical target and drug discovery in an exceptional setting. This work will develop new inhibitors of calcium channels as a neuroprotective strategy to protect vulnerable dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s working with induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived dopamine neurons generated from Parkinson’s patients.

Duties include growth and differentiation of iPSC lines; leading on design and implementation of experiments and cellular assays in neurobiology (eg: calcium imaging, multi-electrode array (MEA), biochemistry, immunocytochemistry, cell and molecular biology; interpretation of data; preparation of data for publication; contribute ideas for new research projects and develop ideas for generating research income; manage own academic research involving small-scale project management; supervise a Research Assistant on the project; and act as a source of information to other members of the group.

You will have excellent knowledge relating to neurodegenerative disease and practical experience in neuronal cell culture and in techniques relevant to molecular and cellular neuroscience. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential. Applicants must hold, or be near completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant area of research and have experience in cellular neuroscience, and molecular cell biology relevant to analysis of neuronal phenotypes.

The Clinical Trials Aseptic Service (CTAS) is responsible for aseptically preparing clinical trial doses for patients to several departments across the Trust and maintaining up to date documentation according to Good Clinical Practise (GCP).

Your new role

• A BSc (or equivalent experience) within a life sciences or business discipline, ec biology, chemistry, etc
• Excellent understanding of project and programme management principles, eg from having previously defined these for a business
• Experience in designing and implementing integrated product development and portfolio management processes
• The ability to work well within a cross-functional team framework and be highly delivery focused

Previous exposure to immunology projects is an advantage, but is not necessary.

Full-time, Fixed-term until 30th April 2027

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to work on a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary project to develop transgenic rodent models of Parkinson’s disease. The work will support projects seeking to use rodent models of disease to understand the earliest stage of neurodegeneration at a point in which neuronal dysfunction precedes neuronal loss, offering an early therapeutic window for therapy. The post will be based in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, and is supported by the Wellcome Trust and an international consortium funded by an Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) grant.

Duties include colony management, breeding and maintenance of lines of transgenic rodents; collection of brain tissue for gene expression analysis; general laboratory management, preparation of data for publication; contributions to wider project planning and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses. You will have a good working knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, excellent practical experience of working with animal models and an interest in pre-clinical in vivo models of neurological disease. Previous experience of the management and maintenance of transgenic rodent lines would be an advantage. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential.

Applicants must hold a BSc/MSc in a relevant area of research and will have excellent practical experience of working with animal models.

The fixed-term post is available immediately and until 30th April 2027. Scrutinising and negotiating research-related contracts on behalf of the OUH. We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Research Assistant in Vaccine Development to support the fantastic work of the Bioprocess and Analytical Development group here at the Jenner Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine.

This role provides an opportunity to work with a team of scientists developing vaccines (adenovirus vectored, recombinant protein, VLP-based, etc) and advancing knowledge on a range of infections, including rabies, COVID-19 and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

As Research Assistant, you will develop your skills in experimental design, planning and analysis, while making a meaningful contribution to global health through developing new vaccines. You will be responsible for producing high quality data using a range of modern laboratory techniques, such as cell culture (mammalian and microbial), chromatographic protein purification, ELISA, digital PCR, DNA cloning, flow cytometry and viral culture. You will also be responsible for developing, following, and adapting experimental protocols for a range of experimental techniques, such as DNA cloning, mammalian and microbial cell culture, qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, viral culture, chromatographic protein purification and filtration processes (TFF, depth filtration, etc).

To be successful in this role, you will hold a BSc degree in medical science or a related discipline along with practical experience of biology, medical science or similar laboratory work. You will have knowledge of vaccinology, infectious disease, and/or molecular biology and the ability to work within established research programmes, with the potential to contribute ideas for new and improved experiments. You will have excellent communication skills, including the ability to maintain clear laboratory records, write for publication, and represent the group at meetings and conferences as well as good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others.
