We invite applications from highly motivated and experienced Research Fellows to join the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) and contribute to a HORIZON-EU-funded project focusing on sensing in advanced fibre-optic communication systems and AI-driven event detection. You will be responsible for leading and implementing key tasks across work packages that address sensing in the deployed fibre-optic networks and real-time event classification, data fusion techniques, and infrastructure monitoring for large-scale fibre-optic systems.
As the successful applicant you will be responsible for leading and coordinating key tasks across multiple work packages that span the entire project lifecycle, from the specification and design of large-scale fibre-optic systems to their experimental validation and demonstration. A particular focus will be on developing AI-based algorithms for event detection and classification, combining state-of-the-art machine learning models with real-world data from diverse environments such as submarine and terrestrial cables and railway infrastructure. You will also contribute to cutting-edge research in data fusion techniques by integrating various sensing modalities - involving, for example, state of polarisation monitoring and distributed acoustic sensing - to improve accuracy and performance in real-time decision-making systems.
You will lead efforts in infrastructure monitoring, coordinating large-scale field trials in collaboration with industry partners, and ensuring the system's performance is rigorously tested and validated under real-world conditions. This will involve overseeing both laboratory-based assessments and field installations, and refining testing protocols.
You will possess a doctorate in photonics or closely related field, or relevant industrial experience.
The AiPT is one of the world’s leading photonics research centres. The Institute pursues a diverse range of device-and-system-level topics at the leading edge of technology. The key research areas include high-speed optical transmission and processing, in fibre-based optical devices and components, nonlinear photonics, and in fibre optic sensors. Applicants are welcome to join in the a vibrant team of researchers guided by world-leading AiPT cultivates a supportive and inclusive working environment where academics, post-doctoral researchers and students cooperate to overcome major scientific challenges in a welcoming and collegial atmosphere.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. S. K. Turitsyn (s.k.turitsyn@aston.ac.uk).

About Disability Confident
A Disability Confident employer will generally offer an interview to any applicant that declares they have a disability and meets the minimum criteria for the job as defined by the employer. It is important to note that in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people.
