Collections Care Assistant

About us

At National Railway Museum the historic site is changing, a multi-million-pound programme of construction and restoration projects is transforming and modernising the museum, with new buildings, galleries, visitor attractions, outdoor spaces and vital conservation work.

We are now recruiting for a Collections Care Assistant to join the team on a fixed-term contract until March 2025. This role is full-time, working 35 hours per week, on-site at the National Railway Museum in York.

About the role

As Collections Care Assistant you will work within our Collections Care team during this busy and exciting time for the museum. You will be involved in a wide variety of conservation and collections care activities including assisting with environmental monitoring and conservation cleaning of the collections.

You will assist in the condition reporting, care, data management and recording, assist with the changeover of exhibitions, cleaning and packing of objects from the collection stores and on gallery.

You will work closely with the other members of the Conservation & Collections Care team, supporting the work of the Conservation team, and more widely the work of the Documentation, Registration, Photography and Curatorial teams.

You will undertake conservation object cleaning of collection items where appropriate. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.

About you

Joining us you will have good knowledge or practical experience of working with historic collections coupled with an understanding of collections care, particularly object handling. You will have good communication skills which will enable you to work well as part of a team.

You will be able to work well under pressure and use prioritising skills to meet deadlines calmly and effectively. Crucially you will have the ability to work to a high standard of accuracy with good attention to detail.

What you’ll be doing:

• Deliver scientific excellence in accordance with ISO17025 and ISO9001 quality accredited procedures.
• Work from Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to identify and diagnose pathogens and pests, using a range of methods including, but not limited to, microscopy, ELISA and PCR.
• Data entry and validation
• Carry out general laboratory duties e.g. glassware washing, cleaning and tidying
• Complete laboratory documentation with test results.
• Help to clean and maintain facilities and equipment.
• Have the opportunity to assist other teams throughout the programme

What we’re looking for:

• Ideally, qualifications in a science subject, preferably a biology discipline or equivalent experience
• Experience of working in a laboratory is desirable, but not essential and we can teach you!
• A methodical approach to work and attention to detail is key.
• The ability to follow written and verbal instructions efficiently within regulated environments.
• Practical IT experience, in particular Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to keep clear written records.
• An excellent collaborator and communicator.

We are now recruiting for an Archive and Library Assistant (Copying) based on-site at the National Railway Museum in York. This is a full-time, permanent role, working 35 hours per week.

About the role

As Archive and Library Assistant (Copying) you will be based in Search Engine to administer the copy service for both public and internal requests. At Search Engine you will deliver the service, working with colleagues within Collections Services, Photo Studio and Picture Library to retrieve collections items and images for scanning, capturing collections information that can be used in the digitisation process.

You will also process payments onto our finance system and maintain accurate records so that orders can be tracked and income monitored. Additionally, you will be supporting Search Engine's volunteer research team, Inreach, by administering orders and payments.

About you

Joining us you will have good customer service experience and the ability to communicate effectively with others. You will be able to work calmly and manage and prioritise tasks effectively in time-sensitive situations, using your good attention to detail to follow processes accurately.

Crucially you will have good computer skills, including experience of using databases to find information and the knowledge or a willingness to learn of how to input data into finance systems.

Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station – Field Assistant II, Willsboro, NY

The Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station (Cornell AES) is dedicated to sustainable "science for life," in its two core, separate but related, functions -- the operation of world-class research facilities throughout the state and the generation and application of research-based knowledge through the administration of federal formula grants.

The Willsboro Research Farm encompasses 352 acres, with an additional 40 acres of research fields at the Miner Institute in Chazy, NY. Research projects are diverse and include breeding, horticulture and crop and soil science research on small grains, corn, biofuel grasses, grapes, high tunnel production and much more. The farm is managed by CUAES as a site for interdisciplinary applied research. Cooperatively support agricultural research, teaching and extension projects in accordance with the Land Grant Mission.

What You Will Do

As the Field Assistant II you will participate in most phases of research and production to support 10+ faculty research programs. Key Responsibilities will include:

• Safely and effectively operate over 40 specialized pieces of farm equipment, under the strict technical parameters of small-plot research.

• Primary and secondary tillage, seeding, cultivation, mowing, harvesting and collection of water, soil and crop tissue research samples, pesticide applications, facility care, maintenance, and special projects as assigned.

• Work cooperatively to inspect, maintain and repair a diverse fleet of research farm equipment, including tractors, mowers, seeders, cultivators, combines, and haying equipment.

• Assist in the maintenance of the farm’s high tunnel and office/barn facilities.

• Assist with the installation, monitoring and troubleshooting of irrigation systems.

• Record measurements of field environmental conditions as requested.

• Properly prepare land and provide basic documentation of field activities.

• Respond to assigned service requests in a timely manner with minimal direct supervision.

• Some requests will require immediate action and flexibility.

• Provide occasional guidance for temporary summer employee(s).

Participate in annual preparations for field days and other agricultural outreach events. Work collaboratively to progress a culture of sustainability. Effectively communicate with all stakeholders.

What We Need from You

You will be most successful in this role if you have a High School Diploma with 2 years’ experience in commercial or research farming or equivalent combination of education and experience. Other requirements include:

• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a NYS Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license. 

• Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals.

• Capable of operating farm tractors, trucks, and numerous other pieces of farm equipment including but not limited to: disks, cultivators, mowers, spraying equipment, chainsaws, air tools, backhoe, front end loader, research plot combines, and most common hand-held shop and farm tools.

• Ability to routinely perform equipment maintenance (e.g. daily lubrication, oil changes, and replacement of broken or worn parts).

• Must possess skills and aptitude in making mechanical repairs.

• Experience with irrigation equipment.

• Work on all kinds of unfavorable weather conditions, noise, and dust.

• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license.

• Must possess basic computer skills for the purposes of data entry, record keeping, and informational searches.

• Demonstrate strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

What you will do:

The temporary summery field assistant will help maintain the horticultural and agronomic field experiments at the Cornell Willsboro Research Farm.

This 352-acre farm is located along Lake Champlain at the base of Willsboro Point. The farm has both clay and sandy soils, permitting a range of field experiments for optimizing management of agricultural resources. Fifty-two specially constructed field-scale drainage plots provide researchers with a unique opportunity to develop and test crop fertilizer application practices that are agriculturally, environmentally and economically sound. In support of the region's important dairy sector, several studies are designed to improve forage production systems.

What you will do:

The temporary summery field assistant will help maintain the horticultural and agronomic field experiments at the Cornell Willsboro Research Farm. 

• Planting

• Weeding

• Harvesting a range of crops including strawberries, juneberries, honeyberries, aronia berries, elderberries, forage and grain sorghums, sprouting broccoli and cabbage.

• Assist with data and sample collection and processing

This is a part-time, 19 hour per week, 5- month appointment (May – October) and is located at Cornell University’s Willsboro Research Farm in Willsboro, NY. This is not a benefits eligible position.

What We Need:

• Basic computer skills.

• Strong communication skills

• Must have reliable transportation to be able to get to the job site independently.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision .

• Must be able to lift 50 pound repeatedly throughout the day and lift, bend, kneel, and climb ladders.

• Be able to work outside in all types of weather.

Compensation - $16 per hour - $17 per hour

Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station – Field Assistant III, Musgrave Farm

The Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station (CUAES) is dedicated to sustainable science for life in its two core functions: the operation of world-class research facilities throughout the state and the generation and application of research-based knowledge through the administration of federal formula funds.  The 450-acre Musgrave Research Farm in Aurora, NY is managed by CUAES as an essential resource for support of interdisciplinary applied agronomic research. The Musgrave Research Farm is one of 9 facilities that are within CUAES across NYS.  Many of Cornell’s agricultural researchers utilize many of the facilities and Musgrave is a vital component of the operation as it relates to NYS agriculture. 

What You Will Do

The Field Assistant III position supports the Farm Supervisor in maintaining the Musgrave Research Farm and supporting the ongoing research at that facility. 

Job functions include:

• The operation, maintenance, and repair of 40+ pieces of farm/construction equipment;

• Field operations that include tillage, planting, pesticide application, irrigation, and harvesting;

• Facility and grounds maintenance;

• Operating and maintaining grain storage equipment;

• Working with researchers;

• Parts/supply inventorying and procuring;

• Equipment fabrication;

• Farm infrastructure repair and maintenance including field tiling, drainage work, driveway repair;

• Professional development as it relates to the position. 

This position is a full-time (39 hours/week) position located in Aurora, New York.

What We Need from You

• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

• Associates Degree and up to 2 years’ relevant experience or equivalent combination operating and maintaining modern farm machinery.

• Must possess and maintain a NYS Commercial Drivers’ License.

• Demonstrated experience planting and harvesting crops with a strong emphasis with corn, hay, wheat, barley, oats, rye, and soybeans.

• Demonstrated experience with modern grain drying and storage facilities/equipment.

• Must be very mechanically inclined, with experience repairing machinery pertinent to agronomic farm operations.

• Experience in snow plowing, highway maintenance and repairs including field drainage.

• Must be a certified forklift operator.

• Must have and maintain a NYS commercial pesticide applicators license.

• Flexibility to work extended daytime hours, weekends, and some holidays.

• Must possess basic skills in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and Internet navigation for the purposes of data entry, record keeping, information searches, and supply and parts procurement. 

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

• Must be able to work under varying climatic conditions and be exposed to dusty conditions, animal wastes and odors, including work at heights.

• Proven ability to communicate clearly and work well with diverse faculty, unit supervisor, staff, students, vendors, and other research and extension personnel in a professional and respectful manner.

• Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, using extreme caution when handling and applying.

• Must be safety oriented; know, understand, adhere and train others to conform to all safety requirements and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associates degree in Agriculture with an agronomic emphasis and/or more than 7 years of agricultural field experience.

• Experience working in an agricultural research environment.

• Experience with equipment fabrication, modification, and design.

• Experience welding mild steels and aluminum.

• Experience with GPS mapping and farm record keeping.
