We recruit throughout the year for talented and aspiring scientists, and this is why we’re a leading UK centre for sustainable agriculture and plant protection research, providing truly interdisciplinary applied research for commercial and government customers.
As an Assistant Scientist you’ll prepare and test samples, for plant health pests and diseases and to report on work contributing to vital projects. Disciplines include, Virology, Nematology, Mycology, Molecular, Seeds and Bacteriology. Please state your preference in your application.
Working pattern: 37.5 Monday – Friday (flexi between 7am & 7pm)

What you’ll be doing:
- Deliver scientific excellence in accordance with ISO17025 and ISO9001 quality accredited procedures.
- Work from Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to identify and diagnose pathogens and pests, using a range of methods including, but not limited to, microscopy, ELISA and PCR.
- Data entry and validation
- Carry out general laboratory duties e.g. glassware washing, cleaning and tidying
- Complete laboratory documentation with test results.
- Help to clean and maintain facilities and equipment.
- Have the opportunity to assist other teams throughout the programme
What we’re looking for:
- Ideally, qualifications in a science subject, preferably a biology discipline or equivalent experience
- Experience of working in a laboratory is desirable, but not essential and we can teach you!
- A methodical approach to work and attention to detail is key.
- The ability to follow written and verbal instructions efficiently within regulated environments.
- Practical IT experience, in particular Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to keep clear written records.
- An excellent collaborator and communicator.
