Do you seek a part-time role helping to guide undergraduates into health careers?  The Health: Science, Society and Policy (HSSP) program at Brandeis University seeks to hire a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to manage and oversee the internship experience and teach the associated course for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.  These undergraduate internships span the spectrum of health functions, including:

• biomedical and health-services research in labs or biopharmaceutical companies;
• clinical support positions in hospitals, clinics, dental offices, physical therapy centers, nursing homes, or ambulance companies;
• public health functions in community health centers or public health agencies;
• health administration, health policy, and consulting jobs;
• health advocacy positions in non-profits and patient groups, including those that focus on how social determinants like hunger, housing, neighborhoods and environment affect health.

Candidates for the position should have familiarity with many of these fields, how they connect to each other, and their role in the delivery of health to patients and populations.  The internship instructor is not required to find internships for students, but the department maintains a database of past assignments if necessary. The instructor is asked to do a quick email or Zoom check-in with each student during the internship, some of which occur over the summer. The position is well-suited for someone established in the healthcare industry who wants to mentor future clinicians, medical personnel, and health advocates.

HSSP 89a Internship and Analysis

This course for declared HSSP majors combines: 1) a supervised health-related internship, and 2) a weekly, classroom-based discussion during the Internship Seminar. The internship placement must be clearly health-related and take place within a healthcare organization whose work involves science (e.g., natural sciences and medicine), society (e.g., the social sciences and public health), and/or policy (e.g., law, politics, economics, and organizations). The internship must be arranged in consultation with and approved in writing by the HSSP Internship Instructor BEFORE the internship begins. Students are required to attend a weekly 1.5 hour sections, keep a journal, write short papers, and prepare presentations - all of which requires reflection on and systematic analysis of the internship experience. Usually offered every semester.

The course is taught in person, seminar style for 30-35 HSSP students in the fall and 15-20 students in the spring. The class meets on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:45-2:05pm in the fall, but there is flexibility in scheduling for future semesters.  The course is designed to connect the students’ front-line experience with long-term career pathways, as well as discuss some of the larger issues & debates in health care. Prior syllabi will be made available as a background/foundation.  The salary is $16,640 for both semesters. This appointment is to a position that is in a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 509.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

•Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related field

•Minimum one year of hands-on experience either through research in a laboratory or course setting, demonstrating proficiency in RNA purification, chromatin immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, PCR, and yeast genetics

•Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team

•An emphasis on organizational and record keeping skills to ensure the conduct of rigorous and reproducible research

•A strong desire to learn and with an emphasis on being curious to pursue exploratory research- this typically means being a part of many different projects and pursuing many different ideas

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Conduct independent research, utilizing advanced molecular biology techniques

(e.g., chromatin immunoprecipitation, PCR, and yeast genetics)

•Design and meticulously document experimental protocols and procedures

•Provide critical support to ongoing research projects within the lab

•Actively participate in and contribute to weekly lab meetings, presenting research

findings and discussing relevant journal publications

Brandeis University is looking for a Science Posse Mentor. The Brandeis Science Posse Mentor serves as the primary advisor for a group of 10-12 students who have been selected as Brandeis Science Posse Scholars. Brandeis Science Posse Scholars are students from the New York City area who are selected for undergraduate admission to Brandeis based on their outstanding leadership skills. Many but not all Scholars are first generation, low-income, or students of color at Brandeis University. The mentor motivates the Posse members to achieve in their academics, and to fully participate in Brandeis University campus life. The mentor works with the Posse members both as a group and as individuals during the first year and sophomore year of college. The Mentor will provide active encouragement for students to major in a STEM discipline.

This is a part time position, approximately 12 hours a week. It is a two-year position.

Examples of Key Responsibilities:

• Designs and leads weekly two-hour meeting with the Scholars. Creates and facilitates these meetings or helps the Scholars create and facilitate the meetings. Meetings should promote academic excellence, campus involvement, and a strong affinity for Brandeis University
• Responsible for attending and actively contributing to trainings, workshops, and retreats sponsored by Brandeis University and/or by the Posse Foundation.

Establishes and builds relationships, and monitors student progress to maintain continuity of advising relationships in order to meet retention and graduation goals of Brandeis University and the Posse Foundation. The Institute of Global Health and Development seeks to hire a Research Associate I in global health research.

Description:

The Institute of Global Health and Development is pleased to announce an opening for a  Research Associate I in global health research. Qualified candidates are invited to join a community that thrives on rigorous research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and supports the mission of knowledge advancing social justice. The SRA I will begin immediate engagement in an existing research project, where they will work to manage research projects, analyze data, develop scholarly articles and scientific presentations, and disseminate findings to advocates and policy makers domestically and internationally.

The RA I will support a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation coordinating a collaborative effort to estimate the costs of HIV service delivery using activity-based costing and management (ABC/M). ABC/M is a multi-country, multi-institutional collaborative which will provide the SRA I with an opportunity to network with diverse stakeholders and engage in a dynamic enterprise seeking to reshape service delivery that affects millions of individuals’ lives throughout sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. They will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of work on this topic, including facilitating the generation of patient-level data on costs and resource allocation for HIV testing, treatment and prevention and improving and disseminating methods for countries performing ABC/M. The RA I will have opportunities for academic publications in top-tier journals, along with the opportunity to collaborate with faculty.  

Position Summary

The RA I will be responsible for managing data ad performing quantitative and qualitative analyses. They will contribute to report and manuscript writing. They will work with graduate research assistants that are assigned to the project.

Candidate Characteristics

We are seeking candidates who are committed to a career in global health systems delivery and economics, have an outstanding academic record. This is a master’s degree level position and applicants with master’s degrees in public health, epidemiology, economics, and public policy are particularly encouraged.

• Proficiency with STATA, R, or another coding language for statistical analysis and data manipulation, as well as proficiency with MS Excel

Compensation, worksite and travel

The Health: Science, Society and Policy (HSSP) Program at Brandeis University seeks an instructor for the HSSP 110a  (HSSP Senior Capstone course - 4 credits) in Spring 2024. This course is designed for seniors in our health major to aggregate their coursework into examining and proposing solutions to a key health care dilemma.  The format of the course is based on a “problem based learning” (PBL) format. This will require students to be active learners for the course.  Students will decide (with guidance) how to tackle the ‘problem’ and learn about it in all its “science” “society” and “policy” aspects.  Students will be responsible (again with guidance) to generate readings and discussion materials for each class.  With the PBL approach, students will use all resources available to obtain information about the problem at hand depending on their section topic.  This means exploring the scientific literature, contacting experts, evaluating claims-makers and stakeholders, locating and evaluating advocacy or self-help groups, assessing treatment programs, etc.  Students will be asked to develop a group paper (approximately five-six student groups per course) paper and a presentation on some significant aspect of the problem.  Based on these presentations, each student will develop a brief position paper, selecting and prioritizing recommended policies to address the problem.  Grading will be based on participation (both class attendance and active classroom participation) and evaluation of written and presentation material.  The class meets on Block M (M/W 5:40 - 7pm).

We seek candidates who have earned a PhD (or other doctorate) in a health-related discipline, as well as sufficient field-based experience to guide soon-to-graduate students on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the topic.  Faculty who have taught undergraduate health science courses will be given preference. Provide assistance with curriculum development for the Brandeis Robotics Lab. We are a new neuroscience group studying the cellular basis of learning and memory in the mammalian brain. This is an ideal position for someone passionate about doing research within a highly collaborative team and looking to gain mentored hands-on laboratory experience in preparation for graduate or medical school.

Key Responsibilities include: 

• Perform basic lab management tasks, including ordering equipment and supplies

• Manage our animal colony 

• Assist in building laboratory equipment, including 3-D printing and open-source hardware

• Support ongoing experiments in the lab

• Conduct independent research utilizing cutting-edge techniques in  two-photon calcium imaging, whole-cell patch recordings, and optogenetics (including behavioral training, data collection, histology, and surgeries)

Qualifications include:

• Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Engineering, or equivalent 

• Excellent organizational skills

• Strong communication skills (both oral and written) 

• Ideally, previous laboratory experience
