Associate- Equity Research, Biotech

The SMid-Cap Biotechnology Equity Research team covers companies spanning three main disease areas of oncology, central nervous system disorders, and rare diseases. The lead analyst is top three ranked in the Institutional Investor vote for the smid biotech category. In 2021 the team has worked on several priced IPOs and add ons and is currently vetting a number of additional transactions. This means that the candidate for this position should be intellectually curious and have a deep desire to learn. The ideal candidate possesses a life science background and experience with financial modeling, as well as passion to follow the stock market. He or she will work alongside the Senior Analyst and Associates in all aspects of the research process, from idea generation to modeling, including but not limited to the following:

• Write industry and company reports and company launch initiations
• Develop doctor/patient surveys and conduct doctor interviews to understand market dynamics, demand and future projection
• Build financial models to quantitatively analyze company valuations
• Demonstrate industry knowledge (such as regulatory, pricing) from early stage study to market approval
• Build relationships and facilitate information flow with contacts at covered companies
• Seek out new, value-added and/or unusual sources of information
• Have ability to monitor news flow and highlight stock-impacting updates when the Senior Analyst is traveling
• Interact regularly with sales, trading and external clients and if performance on team is strong enough, take on coverage of individual names over time 

Qualification:

• Bachelor’s Degree. (Advanced degree in life science discipline is a plus but not required)
• Ideal candidate would have 1-4 years of experience in biotech in equity research, buy side experience or investment banking experience
• Looking for Analyst or Associate level
• Strong writing and financial modeling skills
• Must enjoy following the stock market and doing desktop and field research
• Academic background in a life science field and should have basic understanding of economics, macroeconomic factors and policy
• Must have excellent communications skills, written and verbal
• Must have strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task
• Must work well in a collaborative team environment

Responsibilities :

• Build and maintain financial models using company financial filings using local stock exchanges, SEC and company press releases.
• Publish periodic reports on the company’s financial condition and all relevant news highlights
• Maintain a database of industry data in order to rank each company within its respective industry and geographically
• Publish research on sector trends to support company/sector recommendations
• Prepare reports/primers on industries and evolving developments (ESG, Accounting, Taxes, etc.)
• Initiate and build relationships with investor clients to develop a network of contacts
• Develop a relationship with the financial and investor relations teams of Issuer companies
• Interact regularly with trading desk and sales people regarding investor conversations and trading trends
• Participate in bank conferences and seminars with issuers and investors; help organize corporate & strategic access events
• Work with other analysts within the EM team and other teams on thematic research by industry, region or globally (cross-asset reports)

Required Skills & Experience :

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, International Studies/Relations
• 2 years of experience in the job offered or a related finance occupation
• Knowledge of and interest in international geo-political developments
• Must include 2 years of experience in each of the following:
• Financial modelling
• Written research reports
• Interaction with companies management teams
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Multi-tasking

Job Description:

The Life Sciences & Diagnostic Tools Equity Research team currently covers ~40 listed companies spanning the life sciences tools (analytical and laboratory instruments), diagnostics, biopharma services (contract research and contract manufacturing), and animal health sectors, with a combined market capitalization of ~$900 billion.

The candidate for this position should be intellectually curious and have a deep desire to learn. Although neither a science nor a diagnostics industry background is absolutely required, it is a plus, as it shortens the learning curve and facilitates communication with companies and clients. The candidate should also have experience with financial modeling and quantitative analysis, as well as strong verbal communication and writing skills.

• The ideal candidate possesses a life sciences, diagnostics, or biopharma services industry background and experience with company modeling as well as passion to follow the stock market. They will work alongside Senior Analysts and Associates in all aspects of the research process, from idea generation to modeling, including but not limiting to the following:
• Write industry and company reports
• Develop doctor/patient/research lab/diagnostic surveys and conduct interviews to understand new product/technology potential, market dynamics, and current and future product demand
• Build financial models to quantitatively analyze company valuations
• Demonstrate industry knowledge (such as diagnostic regulatory pathways and reimbursement, genomics and proteomics workflows, biologic drug and vaccine production, technology enabled drug development)
• Build relationships with contacts at covered companies
• Seek out new, value-added and/or unusual sources of information
• Monitor news flow and highlight stock-impacting updates
• Interact regularly with sales, trading and external clients

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree. (Advanced degree in a scientific discipline or industry expertise is a plus but not required)
• Ideal candidate would have minimum 2-4 years of experience (preferably in healthcare) in equity research, buy side experience or investment banking experience
• Strong writing and financial modeling skills
• Must enjoy following the stock market and doing desktop and field research
• Academic background in a science field (e.g., molecular biology, genomics, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry) and should have basic understanding of economics, macroeconomic factors, and government policy
• Must have excellent communications skills (written and verbal)
• Must have very strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task
• Must work well in a collaborative team environment
• Must be a team player and view team’s success as a reflection of individual success
