Essex County Council are delighted to be working in partnership with Braintree District Council to recruit for the role of Building Control Surveyor.

We are evolving our Building Control Service, moving beyond the traditional local government model. Accountabilities
The purpose of this role is to process Building Regulation applications throughout the Braintree District and enforce Building Regulations meeting the Council's statutory obligations. Duties are inclusive but not limited to:
- Review plans, drawings, and documents for compliance with building regulations.
- Conduct site inspections and testing to ensure adherence to building regulations.
- Communicate with stakeholders, including applicants, public, construction professionals, and statutory bodies.
- Advise customers on regulatory compliance and handle demolitions and dangerous structures, including out-of-hours inspections.
- Promote the Building Control Service, ensure adherence to safety policies, support health and safety reporting, and represent the Council at relevant committees.
The Experience You Will Bring
Skillset: Membership of a professional body (RICS or CABE) or level four of the LABC Competency Framework, with proven relevant building control experience and qualifications, such as HNC/Diploma in Building or a degree in Building Control Studies/Building Surveying. Good working knowledge and experience of building control, including plan examinations, site inspections, and handling dangerous structures and demolitions. Should have achieved Class 2/3 Competency with the Building Safety Regulator.
Knowledge: Possess comprehensive knowledge of Building Regulations and legislation, building experience in a practical, technical or professional capacity, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to manage caseload, work independently or as part of a team, influence and negotiate with diplomacy. Proficient in IT, able to conduct structural appraisals of submitted designs, interpret technical drawings and maps, providing clear and accurate advice. Willing to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends, with a valid driving license and access to a car for travel across the district.
Communication: Using a range of communication methods-written, spoken, and electronic-tailored to context, including report and letter writing covering complex issues, ensuring clarity, mutual understanding, and consideration of diverse needs and equality issues.
