The Role and Department  

The Durham Geochemistry Centre in the Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University seeks an Isotope Laboratory Technician (ILT) to be a core member of the DGC team.

The Isotope Laboratory Technician will work alongside the lab manager and academic staff members on a day-to-day basis, to:

• maintain the clean laboratories and troubleshoot laboratory issues (e.g., de-ionised water supply, air handling, acid distillation) and mass spectrometry issues (e.g., cone changing, neb blocking, torches, software) in a time and cost-efficient manner;


• provide clean laboratory and mass spectrometry training and supervision to established and new internal and external users;


• train and supervise new users in the clean laboratory and mass spectrometry lab;


• work with all users (PIs, staff, post-doctoral research fellows, undergraduate, masters, and graduate students) to develop and establish new laboratory and instrumentation procedures (e.g., reagent preparation, sample digestion and chemical purification, acid stills, development of isotope "spiking" techniques);


• lead on routine radiogenic isotope analysis; (MC-ICP-MS, TIMS)


• conduct their own research as time allows;


• oversee clean laboratory chemistry orders and budgeting;


• work with the lab manager on health and safety protocols;


• provide support for trace element analysis, other duties permitting.

The Role and the Department   

The Department of Biosciences is composed of academic staff and research fellows with research and teaching interests that span the broad spectrum of the Biosciences. The Department studies biology from the smallest to the largest scales; from the structures and functions of biological molecules, through to cells, tissues and organisms and to the entire global ecosystem. The interests of academic staff include all types of living organisms, from bacteria, through the plant and animal kingdoms, to human health and disease.

A laboratory technician is required to support research activities within the plant vascular development group based in the Department of Biosciences. The role is at 1.0FTE for an 8 month period, or can be part time with a concomitant increase in contract length. The research group has received funding to work with barley as a study system to understand how crops grow and develop. You will support this project, with a particular focus on aspects of barley transformation and tissue culture, and assist with day-to-day operation of the laboratory including tasks necessary to maintain plant lines under the guidance of academic staff. You will also contribute to ongoing experimental work and participate in group meetings.

The role requires good time management and communication skills, ability to work independently and as a part of a group. We are looking for an enthusiastic person who is willing to learn new things. Previous experience of laboratory-based work is essential. However, the role will include multiple opportunities to acquire new knowledge and technical expertise. About You:

To deliver high standards of technical advice, service and maintenance to all our TrustFord customers.
Have a full valid driving licence, an NVQ Level 2 or 3, City & Guilds or equivalent.
Have previous Automotive Technician experience. Ideally, you'll also have an MOT testing qualification and some main dealership experience.

During your first 12 months of Employment, you will be trained to IMI Level 3 in Electric Vehicle Maintenance and repair to ensure your skills remain relevant throughout your career with us.

The Role and Department

Are you an experienced M&E Lead Engineer with experience in the Building Services industry?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a National Facilities Management company working for one of their prestigious clients' sites covering from Aberdeen, covering Inverness, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Salary: £41,500 plus van plus excellent benefits plus £100 per week on call allowance.

Role Responsibilities:

• Assisting the M&E Supervisor in planning, managing, and monitoring the engineering functions of the existing technical site team.
• Responsible for overseeing all works conducted by the team and sub-contractors in order to ensure safe and successful completion.
• You will manage a diverse team of engineers supporting a site consisting of offices, laboratories and plant.
• Participate in assigned long-term preventative maintenance programs and projects.
• Assume the role of Authorised Person High Voltage (LV).
• Manage the preparation and submission for approval all appropriate Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments workflow and cost through effective management techniques.
• Provide emergency call out cover as and when required.

The successful person:

• Minimum of HNC/HND in Engineering or time served technical apprenticeship.
• Hold 18th edition electrical C&G certificate or be willing to complete the course.
• Qualified or trained in other building service disciplines including HVAC would be an advantage.
• Understanding of legislative compliance and contract law preferred
• Be commercially aware and have a reasonable knowledge of budget preparation, negotiation, and management.
• Good all-round knowledge of Facility Management and Building Services Engineering.
• The ability to establish, implement and monitor high standards of excellence in areas of quality, safety and operational performance.
• Be resilient under pressure and able to converse confidently with staff, suppliers and customers at all levels.
• A full UK Driving licence.
