An exciting opportunity has arisen for a trainee orthopaedic plaster technician at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is interested in a career within our plaster service. The successful applicant will need to have a good standard of education, excellent interpersonal skills, good manual dexterity and a desire to learn new skills.

Orthopaedic plaster technicians work in the field of Trauma & Orthopaedic Outpatients, Fracture Clinic, Accident & Emergency Departments and Operating Theatres. It is your job to apply casts to patients, at the doctor’s request following an accident, for elective orthopaedic conditions and following surgery. You will be expected to complete the British Orthopaedic Association Casting Course after a minimum of one year working in the plaster service. Following qualification the person will be expected to remain within the department for a minimum of one year.

This is a developmental role and you will join the team as a trainee orthopaedic plaster technician. Following a minimum of one year working and learning within the plaster room you will be required to complete the British Casting Certificate (BCC). This certificate is validated by the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners UK (AOP UK) and is supported by the Society of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing (SOTN) of the Royal College of Nursing. Once the qualification is completed successfully you will receive 60 credits either at Diploma Level 8 SCQF equivalent to Level 5 NQF, or Degree Level 9 SCQF equivalent to Level 6 NQF. The course/examination will be undertaken on a 5-week residential course held at Stanmore Orthopaedic Hospital, London. Completion of the qualification will enable you to work in the plaster service as a Band 4 Junior Qualified Orthopaedic Plaster Technician and then progress into more senior roles as they become available.

The qualified Orthopaedic Plaster Technician is a vital member of the healthcare team providing a service not just in Orthopaedics and Trauma but also Trust-wide across many different specialties. In a similar way to Orthotists and Physiotherapists, they interpret prescriptions from a wider multidisciplinary team, being able to discuss issues of care with other relevant Healthcare Professionals.

Main Responsibilities

You as the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for managing the shift maintenance team, taking ownership of performance and quality, achieving and maximising the efficiency of the process and delivering a preventative maintenance scheme for fixed and mobile plant whilst also proactive on the reactive maintenance of day-to-day plant operations. Leakage Technicians must be proficient in the use of leakage detection equipment, including a correlator, pipe tracer, ground microphone and listening stick. Experience within Step Testing, Trunk Mains, Validation and Seepage would be desirable but not essential.

Working as part of our medicines management senior management team, you will lead and manage pharmacy technicians in the locality to ensure they are supported to work both in the inpatient and community settings.

The post holder needs to have excellent communication skills, and a desire to work on the front line in mental health with patients, carers and healthcare professionals alike as part of our innovative mental health pharmacy team. Take on operational responsibility for managing pharmacy technicians in their locality to ensure safe and effective delivery of medicines management services within the inpatient and community services.

Working alongside the lead clinical pharmacists, key aspects of this clinical post will include managing pharmacy technicians to provide support and advice on medicines management to the inpatient and community services. This will include focusing on medicines reconciliation on admission, discharge facilitation, patient counselling, medicines supply and ensuring that pharmacy staff in the community teams are competent and confident in delivering pharmacy services in all clozapine and depot clinics within their locality.

You will have a particular role in implementing and monitoring the inpatient and community clinical pharmacy standards and working closely with the Chief, Deputy Chief Pharmacist and Lead Clinical Pharmacists to identify service gaps and areas for improvement.

You will also be involved in providing training and undertaking and developing audits and projects to evaluate and improve services alongside pharmacy and trust priorities and objectives.

The roles and duties of this post include:
• Managing pharmacy technicians in the locality to ensure medicines management processes are to a high standard across all sites.
• To provide a comprehensive medicines management service to the mental health unit, including ward pharmacy visits, multidisciplinary team meetings and community and crisis team support.
• Promote seamless and integrated care for patients with mental health conditions, supporting the transition of patients across care settings so they receive the required level of care to support them in taking their medication safely in the most appropriate care setting.
• Support discharge planning to provide a smooth and safe transition of care. Ensure seamless pharmaceutical care across the KMPT teams where the post is based.
• Be responsible for relevant teaching and educational programmes for the staff in the inpatient, community services and for health care professionals working in primary care.
• Discussing medication with patients and carers and developing a variety of approaches to support informed care.
• Educating colleagues about medicines management and medicines optimisation.

You will play a crucial part keeping vehicles operational as the service runs 24/7. You will maintain and service vehicles and equipment to the highest of standards.

Your role will include:

• Ensuring effectiveness of the operation of vehicles and equipment following manufacturer's recommendations for repair and maintenance.
• Complete documentation of details of repairs or work carried out. This can be electronically or written down.
• Manage stock levels of local parts to ensure smooth operation.
• Work with the fleet and equipment service to meet departmental needs and objectives

To be considered for the role require:

• Accredited IMI (or equivalent) Master Technician or demonstrate the capability to achieve and maintain that standard through formal assessment. (Level 3 LGV Technician)
• IRTEC Certificate (where relevant)
• Experience or willingness to learn relevant servicing requirements for specialist vehicles.
• Level 4 in Diagnosis, testing and repair of ICE/hybrid/electric vehicles and components or demonstrate capability to achieve and maintain that standard through formal assessment of future fleet.
• Experience in working with complex, multi demand fleet and technician environment.
• Ideally have experience with Volvo/Scania/Mercedes/Iveco

This role is Monday to Friday - 37hrs per week

The role pays £18.15ph - £20.47ph depending on experience.

DBS and satisfactory referencing required.
