The Candidate

Job Description for Maintenance Electrician:

As a Maintenance Electrician at NNL you will be performing routine maintenance on a wide range of Electrical and Instrumentation plant systems. You will also carry out project work, breakdown repairs and safe isolations.

Exciting news! NNL is piloting a 4-day work pattern for our Compliance Engineering Maintenance Team at the Central Site. This work pattern is designed to provide our employees with greater flexibility, which in turn supports their work-life balance while maintaining our standards of service.

Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Maintenance Electrician:

• Time served Electrician or Instrument Mechanic holding recognised apprenticeship (e.g. NVQ level 3 Electrical Instrumentation or equivalent).
• Able to understand single-line electrical drawings, instructions and manuals.
• Proficient in English and Maths.
• Become Developed Vetting cleared (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial, criminal record checks, interview plus 10 years of UK residency).
• Self-motivated, driven and resilient.
• Able to make correct and informed decisions under pressure.
• Evidence of self-motivation with demonstrable levels of drive, energy and resilience.
• Required to become Appointed as a Nominated Person Electrical.

Desirable Criteria for Maintenance Electrician:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the Operation & Maintenance requirements associated with their area.
• Knowledge of maintenance programmes and company standards/industry best practice.

The Opportunity

EDF Renewables UK is one of the UK’s leading renewable energy companies, specialising in wind power and battery storage technology. We develop, build, operate and maintain wind farms and other renewable technologies throughout their lifetime. Our portfolio of nearly 1,000 MW consists of 36 wind farms – including two offshore wind farms – and one of the largest operational battery storage units in Europe. We’re also seeking to deliver further growth from its own development pipeline or though securing new acquisitions of projects and has more than 2GW consented, in planning and development.
As a Lead Wind Technician in the team based at our Carlisle Technical Service Centre, every day is different and provides a real opportunity to make a difference in our ambition to help the UK achieve Net Zero.

Location; The position is based at the Carlisle Service Centre (CA1 2FT) and we are looking for a candidate that lives within a suitable commutable distance.

What you’ll be doing.

As Lead Technician, you will be reporting directly to your Area Manager, being based at our Carlisle service centre where you will oversee the operations of our wind farms located in the Cumbria Area and support the wider O&M team.
You will be responsible for delivering scheduled and unscheduled maintenance services in accordance with manufacturers guidelines, in addition to:


- Supervising & Leading the Operational Team of wind turbine technicians
- Scheduled service in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines
- Reporting and planning maintenance activity
- Managing spare part and consumable stock
- Fault-finding, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair on all turbine systems, which will include mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies and major components.
- Proactive repair or component replacement to prevent complete failure or system downtime.
- Supervising specialist and subcontractor activity during main component exchange
- Complying with all health and safety requirements including the WTSR
- Providing out of hours and weekend response to turbine breakdown
- Ensuring the highest level of turbine availability

What do you need to be great at this role?

You’ll be a time served Engineer (electrical/mechanical) with a primary focus on ensuring operations and maintenance activities are undertaken to the highest levels.
You’ll hold a AT/AE qualification under Wind Turbine Safety Rules (WTSR) and have significant technical expertise gained through a blend of academic (Electrical or Mechanical HNC/HND/NVQ Level 3) and “hands on” operational environments.

You’ll be a strong safety-minded person with excellent analytical thinking. This role requires a strong sense of planning and organisation and an ability to communicate and pass on technical knowledge.
Equally important is a genuine enjoyment and enthusiasm for working in this field. You will have:


- Qualifications in electrical and/or mechanical disciplines to NVQ3 level (or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience). Knowledge of Vestas & Nordex turbine platforms would be an advantage.
- Excellent analytical skills
- High level of physical fitness and good health.
- Ability to work at height and in adverse weather conditions.
- Excellent understanding of health and safety.
- Previous accreditation as AT/AE under WTSR.
- High motivation and a flexible and enthusiastic approach to working in a small team.
- Good level of computer literacy.

You must have a full, clean UK Driving Licence, and live within a 35 mile/ 60-minute radius of our Carlisle Service Centre.
