With more than 2,000 students, 200 staff and numerous visitors attending the College each day, Queen Mary’s is a very busy place. The site is large at 23 acres and includes a sports centre and theatre. The site is made up of a number of separate buildings which vary in age and furnishings. We recently installed a perimeter fence and access control to all buildings. There is a dedicated team of site services personnel, including: this role, an evening caretaker, grounds person, student security officer, cleaning staff and the Site Services Manager. The Team keep the site suitably maintained, welcoming, clean and safe for staff, students and visitors. A recent Ofsted report graded us as Outstanding for Student Attitudes and Behaviour. We are looking for a strong team player who will take responsibility for unlock at 5.30am, Monday to Friday. The individual will take pride in their role and help us provide a safe and well-maintained site which is a great place for the whole College community to work and study. Purpose of Job: To maintain building and other assets to provide a safe, secure and fit for purpose environment for students, staff, visitors and other users to enjoy. Accountable to: Site Services Manager Key Outcomes: Site unlocked by 6am ready for the cleaning team to commence their duties, and the College’s daily activities Safe and secure buildings and premises Basic maintenance duties to ensure study and working spaces are fit for purpose Support for Exams Team to ensure compliant delivery of examinations Support for Sports Centre and Sport/PE Department to ensure safe delivery and compliance Support Site Services Manager with contractor management. Support Site Services Manager to ensure College complies with legislative and College policies, processes and arrangements Deputise in Site Services Manager’s absence (Fridays) Specific Responsibilities - The post holder is responsible for a range of duties, which include, but are not limited to: Opening the site and buildings and alarm re-sets Ensuring the security of the buildings and site in general. Minimising cost and wastage by switching off lighting and heating as appropriate Making safe pedestrian routes and ensuring lighting is sufficient during the hours of darkness to enable safe passage Act as key holder in the event of emergency call outs on a shared basis Porterage of furniture and equipment as required To maintain the heating and ventilation within the parameters of qualification Disposal of broken and damaged assets in line with waste management regulations and contractor limitations. Addressing faults and repairs within capabilities and bringing to the attention of the Site Services Manager where a contractor may be required. Supporting Community by managing expectations of non-QMC users and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone on campus. Supporting the grounds person where their role requires Contribute to emergency evacuations. Person Specification: Some caretaking and/or maintenance or DIY experience desirable An early ‘morning person’ Able to work independently but with a strong team ethic A friendly, helpful manner – good customer service Reliable, trustworthy and responsible Flexible and proactive approach to responsibilities A sense of humour appropriate to working in a setting with young people Benefits This role attracts a number of benefits such as, use of the Sports Centre facilities, free onsite parking, complimentary beverages for all staff, related training and development, and a generous sickness and maternity/paternity package. Contractual Information Salary £13.96 per hour (point 12 on the Sixth Form Colleges Support Staff pay scale) currently £26,927 per annum. In addition, an early morning shift allowance is paid of £1,245 per annum. (Applicable to early shift only).Normal working hours: 37 hours per week Monday – Thursday (5.30-1.30 (30 minutes lunch break) & Friday (5.30-1pm), full time, full year.
Holiday entitlement: 25 days a year, commencing on 1 September, with additional bank holidays and Christmas closure days. Other terms of employment: The successful candidate will have the choice whether or not to join the Local Government Pension Scheme.The College contributes a monthly sum equivalent to 19.1% of your salary, whilst staff at this salary level contribute approx. 5.5%.
