PURPOSE OF JOB:

To participate in the provision of an efficient and cost-effective Mortuary service within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To contribute to the management of the mortuary storage facility ensuring HTA guidelines and departmental protocols are followed.

1. Financial & Management

1.1 To be aware of the financial constraints within the NHS and Pathology and ensure that there is no unnecessary wastage of supplies or resources.

2. Personnel & Training

2.1 To work closely with fellow mortuary technicians.

2.2 To host mortuary tours for working groups within the trust and visiting FD’s, clinicians and retrieval teams

2.3 In conjunction with the Senior APT, to provide and certify training of porters and visiting Funeral Directors in use of mortuary equipment, mortuary process and handling of deceased within the mortuary environment.

3. Service Delivery and Quality

3.1 Assist and support the Site Leads and other staff with all mortuary activities using local SOPs and trust policies.

3.2 To apply to knowledge expected of an Anatomical Pathology Technician, to the preparation of bodies for Post Mortem and be responsible to the Senior/Chief Technician in the delivery of high quality Post Mortem services.

3.3 To ensure the appropriate management of specimens collected at Post Mortem, that is; collection, labelling, safe handling, storage and transportation.

3.4 Assist and maintain clear communication with Consultant Pathologist(s) within the postmortem room.

3.5 To engage in continued growth of the department across site through the quality management systems, HTA, and previous mortuary experience(s).

3.6 Admit and release of deceased patients and understanding the legal documentation in accordance with HTA and trust policies.

3.7 To maintain accurate records of all property that may accompany deceased.

3.8 Understanding of documentation required for the admission, post-mortem, release and disposal of bodies, personal effects, and tissue retention for a scheduled purpose.

3.9 To liaise with the bereavement officer(s), funeral directors and coroners’ officer in the documentation and release of deceased patients from the mortuary. and with other partners and stakeholders both internal and external to the trust.

3.10 Ensure specimens are labelled and handled in accordance with local pathology policies and HTA requirements.

3.11 To prepare viewings and when necessary, accompanying the relatives into the viewing room includes sympathetic engagement of persons viewing the deceased, to ensure relatives are supported and treated with courtesy, respect, and consideration always. Assist the bereavement officer when required for viewings, collection of forms.

3.12 To assist in the identification of a deceased patient on behalf of HM Coroner and the Police

3.13 Participate and work with colleagues to provide 24-hour service, working flexibly in accordance with needs of the department. The standard on-call for this post is 1 in 3.

3.14 Encouraged to seek further learning opportunities both internal and external to the trust.

3.15 Must ensure mandatory training is completed in a timely manner. Actively participate in team meetings and continued development of the service.

To work as a member of a multi-tasking maintenance team providing professional and technical expertise within an effective and efficient customer focused maintenance service to provide a fit for purpose estate and environment to all Trust owned, leased or rented properties.

The post holder is also accountable within the facilities Department to ensure adequate processes and procedures exist for the improvement, promotion and delivery of safe, quality and value for money services. This responsibility extends to contributing to all necessary auditing procedures and ensuring the Maintenance Department promotes itself through effective communication to all customers.

We are looking for an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Bristol Hospital and play your part in building a healthier nation. Supporting out team of busy ophthalmic consultant, you will perform relevant tests for each patient at their clinic appointment, helping with the smooth running of the clinic.

As our Ophthalmic Technician, you will:

• Help manage the patient clinics.

• Perform HFA, I-profiler, and OCT testing on patients during the clinics and at other times to suit the patients.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Histology Duties: Technician performs histological techniques such as: fixation, embedding, cutting, and staining in order to prepare tissue slides for final diagnosis by the pathologists. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining specimen integrity and identification from initial accessioning through the entire specimen processing procedure. The incumbent performs a variety of extremely difficult, delicate and complex tissue handling procedure such as preparation of frozen sections for rapid diagnosis of tissue during surgery.
• Prepares/receives specimens: Receives all requests and specimens for testing into the laboratory. Verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request and proper sample submission. Properly identifies all specimens. Verifies discrepancies with the provider. Accessions all specimens into the hospital computer system. The incumbent must be proficient in recognizing tissue from any part of the body and be able to identify the origin and type of tissue.
• Fixation: Perform fixation techniques that are non-routine such as EM, Immunohistochemistry, muscle, and nerve studies, as well as bone decalcification. Understands the unique fixation requirements of each type and size of specimen, and whether or not the specimen must have special treatment before fixation.
• Processing: Must have an excellent understanding of anatomy, and the difference in each type of tissue, how they will respond to different processing protocols, and to determine the correct processing fit for each individual specimen.
• Embedding: Due to the wide variety of specimens the lab can receive (from any part of the body) Knowledge of chemistry and the basic anatomy is essential to understanding the correct orientation of tissue in embedding so that imperative tissue is not lost during cutting. Understanding not only normal, but abnormal/diseased tissue is important. Pathology specimens are irretrievable, therefore trouble-shooting must be done prior to many steps performed.
• Cutting: Incumbent must be able to operate and maintain a microtome, understanding how to perfect the angle, speed, and extra treatments that may be needed (decalcification, softening) and co1Tect temperature are required to produce acceptable sections. Verifying co1Tect embedding techniques, determining the proper manner for appropriate sectioning and thickness, and following the cutting protocol for each type of specimen and stain are essential. Manual and automated coverslipping skills are also required.
• Routine and special stains: Performs staining of tissue sections including advanced staining techniques through automation and manual methods ( e.g. Papanicolauo, Romanowsky, GMS, PAS, Prussian Blue, Verhoeff Van Giesen elastic). These procedures are often complex, difficult, and non-standardized. Many choices of alternative ways of proceeding are determined through the incumbent' s professional training and experience. Procedures must be adapted to individual variance in specimen and stain perfo1mance. Appropriate fixation, embedding, and cutting techniques are evaluated to obtain the co1Tect specimen section for staining. After each stain, the incumbent accepts or rejects slides based upon the proper staining reactions before submitting to the pathologist for microscopic diagnosis. The principles of each unique stain involve chemical procedures such as pH balance and altering the concentration of chemical solutions. Chemical interaction with microorganisms, certain tissue fibers, and types of cells, as well as physiology of different tissues, all must be understood in order to dete1mine proper staining.
