The Finance and Planning Directorate in NHS England is looking for talented, diverse, highly motivated people to join the Planning team.
This is a fantastic opportunity to be at the heart of shaping the priorities of the NHS. The team collaborates with colleagues across NHS England and the NHS to:
• agree and set out the priorities for the NHS, to best meet the needs of patients and deliver value for taxpayers
• develop NHS England’s business plan in response to its mandate from government
• implement and continuously improve the national planning framework for the NHS
As Deputy Director - System Planning, you will lead the design and delivery of the NHS annual planning process, work with systems and regions to develop effective planning tools and facilitate building integrated planning capability and capacity across the NHS. You will build relationships with national, regional and local stakeholders and provide expert planning advice and support to NHS England regional teams and Integrated Care Boards.
The team offers high profile, fast-paced projects. This requires adaptability, rigor and innovation and provides exciting development opportunities for those developing their careers in the NHS, health or the public sector.

1. The ability to lead the design and delivery of the nationally co-ordinated annual NHS planning process based on an in-depth understanding of the NHS, its operating context, priorities and challenges.
2. The skills to lead the integration of nationally mandated NHS planning processes and drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to improve, and systematically implementing the resulting actions.
3. The ability to lead the development of a joined-up planning leadership community at national, regional and system level and use this community to drive co-production and effective co-ordination of NHS planning processes, including plan analysis and assurance.
4. The knowledge to provide expert planning advice and support to systems, and regional and national NHS England teams, including by developing effective planning tools and supporting capability and capacity building across the NHS.
5. Experience of presenting, interpreting, and explaining complex and technical information and concepts to senior leaders in a clear and concise format.
In April 2023, NHS England, NHS Digital, and Health Education England merged to create a new, single organisation to lead the NHS in England.
