Salary: NJC Grade 10 £38,626 to £41,511 per annum. Pro rata for 18.5 hours £19,313 to £20,755 per annum

Location: You can work from one of the following locations: Horsham, Chichester, and Crawley (plus Crawley Weighting Allowance of £561 per annum)

We have exciting opportunities to be part of West Sussex County Council's Mental Health Support Team; we are expanding our Mental Health services to meet the growing needs of our community.

As a Mental Health Practitioner, you will hold cases of children and young people with mild to moderate mental health problems within schools, being responsible for developing packages of care for them.

You will deliver a variety of evidence-based interventions against a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model, working collaboratively with children, young people, their families, schools, and other mental health professionals.

Key areas of responsibility:

• Providing advice to schools and families, and liaising with external specialist services, to get the right support for children and young people.
• Keep clear records, case files, assessments, and data.
• Work in line with safeguarding protocols and follow the Local Safeguarding Board guidance.
• Attend and participate in multi-disciplinary and multi-agency meetings relating to the people you are supporting.

You will need to be able to demonstrate personal resilience as some cases may be sensitive, traumatic, or potentially emotionally distressing.

We currently have opportunities for Mental Health Practitioners to make a real difference in supporting Mental Health in Children. About You

We are looking for someone who has carried out Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and has experience of low or high-intensity CBT mental health assessments.

You will need to be able to travel independently to carry out assessments, and there will be periodic physical requirements to the role.

Key Skills:

1. Ability to carry out low-intensity, CBT-informed 1:1 therapeutic mental health assessments and interventions with children and young people, and/or their families.

3. Ability to work flexibly with a range of professionals and other adults including teachers, parents/carers, social workers, and other mental health professionals in the best interests of the child or young person, communicating complicated or sensitive information effectively.
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build effective therapeutic rapport with a child, young person and / or their parents.
5. Ability to effectively manage an allocated caseload including assessing, recording, and communicating risk appropriately and taking necessary actions.
6. Ability to positively make use of clinical and peer group support supervision.
7. Ability to complete and maintain data recording and paperwork appropriate to the work undertaken.

Hospital Play Specialist The Hospital Play Specialist role will, under the accountability of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to offer normalising and specialised play for children and young people with complex healthcare needs and their families, considering age, stage of development, medical condition and background to promote emotional health and optimal development, this will include the effects of hospitalisation, ill health and treatments required. The Play Specialist is required to have knowledge and experience of developmental, emotional and social play for all age ranges and abilities of children in hospital. Inform, educate, support and advise other healthcare specialists, nursing staff, and families in the role of play. Use play to help and assist in alleviating anxieties, pain, or emotional trauma caused to the child, young person and their families, which can often occur in the unfamiliar hospital environment, aiding them to engage in hospital life, promoting their understanding of their healthcare needs, investigations and treatments. The post holder is expected to be a fully integrated member of the department team. Contribute to the maintenance, consistency and development of the play service throughout the Trust. Receive requests from relevant healthcare professionals and other HPS for a patient to be seen following a referral to a medical consultant and his team. To escort children and young people to theatre (where appropriate) in line with Trust policy, to aid and promote understanding and coping mechanisms. We have two exciting opportunities to join our Thought-Full Mental Health Support Team in schools as Trainee Mental Health Practitioners for SEND (further details of the training and university are below).

You will be expected to work as part of an integrated mental health team which requires creativity, flexibility, and adaptability, and above all a passion for working with Children and Young People in educational settings.

You will work closely with other members of the team including Educational Psychologists to support schools to develop their whole school approach, which includes offering training to schools.

We are looking for someone who has knowledge of Autism and/or Learning Disabilities, who understands the unique challenges for Autistic/LD children, young people, and their families, and who can advocate for them.

To succeed at this role, you will need to:

• Demonstrate a good level of understanding/experience in offering cognitive behavioural informed assessment, formulation, and intervention.
• Demonstrate the ability to study as a self-motivated learner.
• Be open and aware of others.
• Have a great passion and enthusiasm for CBT-informed, evidence-based early interventions for mental health problems, especially for those with SEND.
• Have time management skills, organisational skills, and be able to communicate in English with members of the public.

Training and Qualification information

Our Trainee Mental Health Practitioner positions training starts in January 2025. This is split with 2.5 days a week for academic work (teaching and personal study), and 2.5 days based at the service seeing clients related to training assignments.

You will attend UCL (London's Global University) and work towards a UCL Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Practitioner.

Whilst on assignment you will work within a multidisciplinary team, being responsible for supporting development and embedding services in educational settings.

You will either need a minimum second-class bachelor's degree (or equivalent in a relevant subject), OR if you do not hold the academic criteria but you have relevant professional experience, we would love to hear from you.

Please note: you will be trained in how to adapt interventions, but you will need a good level of experience in offering CBT informed assessments and interventions as this is not taught.

You need to be ready to start with us in January as the course begins on 20 January 2024.
