The Associate Chief of Staff, Geriatrics and Extended Care (ACOS/GEC) is responsible for providing a full range of geriatric services for a diverse group of aging Veterans within the Hines VA Hospital. These duties include but are not limited to referral consultation covering all issues of Geriatrics. The ACOS/GEC will perform as a consultant to our inpatient service, Emergency Medicine service, and others as appropriate. In addition, the ACOS/GEC will perform Geriatric Evaluation and Management and will develop treatment plans for our residents in the Community Living Center. In addition to excellent leadership skills, the ACOS/GEC will be knowledgeable and proficient with VA Performance Measures and the principles of System Redesign, demonstrate leadership qualities, as well as strategic planning skills, dedication to patient-centered care, and a commitment to organizational stewardship.  Responsible for the collection and processing of clinical laboratory specimens.

Collect clinical laboratory specimens (human blood) for testing requested by a clinician. Collection of specimens will be accomplished via routine venipuncture and capillary procedures.

Collect other body fluids and clinical specimens (i.e. stool, urine, sputum). Instructs patients on proper collection of specimens such as stool and urine for laboratory analysis.

Responsible for specimen processing and transport. Processing will include, but not be limited to, specimen centrifugation, aliquoting, and mixing.

Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is seeking a full time board certified or board eligible Neurologist qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with neurological diseases, according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques. Applicant with diverse general Neurology experience, with cognitive or multiple sclerosis experience preferred but not limited to those specialties. Duties also include outpatient and inpatient neurological evaluations; patient examinations; diagnosis; consultations and inpatient service. ACLS /BLS required. Hines VA Hospital is a tertiary hospital affiliated with and adjacent to Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood Illinois ten miles due west of downtown Chicago. Patient Care Duties at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center

• Develop and maintain a faculty outpatient Neurology practice and academic program, that provides extensive expertise in the treatment of various neurologic conditions
• Neurology Inpatient Service:
  • Evaluates and manages the neurology inpatient service as the attending physician and advises the primary physicians on inpatients hospitalized at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA for which consults from the Neurology Service are requested. This will include evaluation and care for patients in the Emergency Department, Medical Service, Surgical Service, and from other inpatient services.
  • Supervises and teaches trainees including medical students, residents and fellows.
  • Provides on-call coverage twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, in accordance with the Attending call schedule

• Serve on Edward Hines VA Hospital department and hospital committees as requested by the service chief.

Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT seeming. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Performs most exams utilizing surgical senile techniques. This requires "scrub-in technique," preparation of surgical trays, preparation of contrast, supplying of catheters and guide wires, Sterile assurance of the patient and equipment that may come in contact with the sterile field with the purpose of assuring that all preventive measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient. • Chairperson of Hazardous Waste and Material Management Subcommittee.
• Provides safety information to internal and external committees.
• Prepares quarterly and annual reports regarding Industrial Hygiene program.
• Annually reviews safety manual/chemical hygiene plan for Pathology, Laboratory, and Medicine Services (PLMS), to include review of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals in service, service line, and product lines; applicable hospital policies; basic safety guides, etc.
• Maintains master inventory of on-hand chemicals and monitors chemical inventories of laboratories.
• Monitors chemical inventory, discards chemicals, and ensures chemicals are appropriately stored, i.e., labeled properly, sealed securely, etc.
• Manages industrial hygiene equipment, including performing annual inventory, advising on repairs, and arranging disposal.
• Reviews and determines need for replacement equipment and ensures adequate space and resources.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
• Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
• Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Participates in continuous improvement initiatives, professional governance, Relationship Based Care and High Reliability Organization (HRO) models of care as part of personal and professional development goals.
• Requires skilled nursing care for patients requiring 24/7 observation. Must have sound clinical judgment and ability to adapt to changing work environment and flexibility with patient care assignments.
• Responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients with oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate to the setting.
• Assist in directing the provision of nursing education/orientation/competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation.
