Position Description:
Covanta is seeking a dedicated, versatile, and self-motivated Safety and Health professional with a solid track record of leading implementation of safety and health programs in an operating environment. We are looking for innovative and successful Safety and Health candidates who are forward-thinking and progressive in their approach to safety and health management systems. The Regional Safety Lead is an experienced, energetic, dedicated, versatile, self-motivated health and safety professional that has proven leadership skills and is a relationship builder with a solid track record of leading implementation of safety and health programs in an industrial environment. This is a great opportunity in a growing company to be strategic and impactful.
This position will ideally be based in the Tampa, FL area. There is an estimated 60% travel for responsibilities in supporting our South Region Facilities.
Responsibilities:
- Foster the success of programming through strong relationships with the President of the South, Chief Operating Officer, Area Managers, facility/regional staff, facility managers, and the facility safety managers.
- Develop, deploy, and support implementation of Health and safety regional strategy and associated policies, process, and procedure.
- Build H&S rigor with the facilities across the South through culture change, leadership, and strong process implementation.
- Interface with Risk Control, Captive Insurance, and all Client/Disposal Partner ES&H Representatives.
- Drive continuous improvement to all current policies, regulations, and unique industrial process rules. Use a lean mindset to drive identify opportunity to improve KPI’s
- Conduct and coordinate worker training in areas governed by OSHA, DOT, and other governing agencies.
- Collaborate with regional peers for best practice sharing, safety programs, compliance, and improvement opportunity.
- Complete quarterly snapshot audits for assigned facilities in the region and track/report findings.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Corporate Safety Procedures and programs.
- Responsible for regional spend against corporate budget coordinating with regional leadership team and finance.
- Coach and support the facility safety leads with the following topics as needed:
- Development of training materials and coordination of weekly and monthly safety themes.
- Fit testing.
- Ergonomics evaluations and design changes.
- Hazard control evaluation.
- Evaluation of safety and health program implementation and maintenance at site level.
- Evaluation of PPE selection.
- Completion and tracking of industrial hygiene sampling and medical surveillance testing (blood lead levels, hearing testing, respiratory medical qualifications).
- Provide support for outage planning/participation and oversight/participation
- Facilitates and/or participates in Accident investigation/Root Cause Analyses for OSHA-recordable injuries and serious near misses.
- Lead lean problem solving, Kaizens, and continuous improvements for missed KPIs.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene or related field or Equivalent industrial experience
- Preferred CSP or CIH
- 10+ years applicable experience (industrial safety & health, environment, OSHA, regulations, ANSI, NFPA, and NIOSH standards)
- Experience working at a regional level or in support of multiple sites.
- 5+ years of in process and program experience
- 2+ years direct management experience

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
The work environment is highly industrial in nature with large fluctuations of heat, cold and exposure to potential hazards
- Able to stand or sit for sustained periods of time.
- Able to climb stairs and ladders; can work at heights if needed.
- Able to work in confined areas when needed.
- Able to lift equipment that can weigh up to 25 pounds on an infrequent basis.
- May need to wear personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, fall protection, safety boots, protective clothing, hearing protection, and gloves.
