Health and safety is an integral part of "doing science" at the Wellcome Genome Campus. This is achieved through providing the help, advice and support the Campus management require to effectively manage health and safety within their teams. The Health and Safety Team have diverse expertise in health and safety. From life sciences to construction and facilities, ergonomics to fire safety.
About the role:
In this role you will advise, influence, and make recommendations to senior management, working creatively to sustain and support the continual development of the health and safety strategy, culture, policy and governance.
Responsible for leading, managing and delivering a professional health and safety support team to ensure that health and safety arrangements and related elements of WSI operations are implemented to achieve not just compliance but good practices in all areas of the Institute.
Responsibilities of the role:
Be responsible, in partnership with the WSI Chief Operating Officer, for formulation, promotion and the sustained development of the WSI health and safety strategy. To provide a management system for compliance with relevant health and safety statutory provisions and related disciplines.
Alongside the senior health and safety advisers drive the implementation and be the change agent who leads continual improvement of the health and safety strategy, advising, coaching and influencing Directors, senior managers and team leaders as necessary to enable them to deliver agreed objectives.
To work with the Director of Estates so that health and safety compliance is incorporated and assured in the design, construction or demolition, occupancy, servicing, maintenance and operation of the WSI infrastructure. Work collaboratively with embedded contractor organisations to ensure effective control of risks created by their work activities.
To lead, direct, motivate and support the staff of the WSI Health & Safety team in the delivery of high quality pragmatic advice and support functions, facilitating compliance with relevant health and safety provisions and related disciplines through the implementation of the health and safety strategy and health and safety management system.
To undertake the recruitment, retention, performance management and development of the WSI Health and Safety team, to ensure the acquisition and maintenance of the appropriate skills and competences to deliver the WSI health and safety strategy. Work with the team leads to support the continuing professional development of the WSI health and safety team.
To manage communication with enforcing authorities e.g. Health & Safety Executive, Fire Authority, Environment Agency and Police Counter Terrorism and Security Team on issues relating to health and safety and related fields to ensure the Institute is represented appropriately and communication is informed and authoritative.
Essentials Skills Required:
Educated to degree level in an appropriate scientific discipline
NEBOSH Diploma or acceptable equivalent (including at higher level)
Chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health [CMIOSH or CFIOSH]
Substantial work experience in a senior health and safety role within a scientific / biological research environment
High level interpersonal and written communication skills to be able to convey complex information in simple terms; to present ideas and solutions; to listen, analyse and respond effectively to complex and difficult situations
Demonstrable ability to engage with, persuade and influence others at all levels to secure commitment and co-operation
Experience of successfully developing and implementing strategy within a complex organisation
Experience of leading and motivating teams in a complex, dynamic environment
Proven ability of leading and successfully managing a team of health and safety professionals in the provision and delivery of an effective, responsive and customer focused health and safety support
Proven staff management, leadership and coaching skills
Effective manager of change
Excellent problem solving skills
Competent user of Information Technology in an office environment
Confident and accomplished presenter
