Maidstone Hospital, situated in the heart of the Kent countryside, covers a large population and includes the regional Oncology centre which is expanding in support of the Kent cancer network.

We are a 26 mixed bedded Elderly Care Ward - you will be supported through your journey by other Band 6 staff members, the Ward Manager and the multidisciplinary team.

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic nurse with an interest in developing their leadership skills to join our existing team. The Kent Oncology Centre, receives approximately 8,000 new patients every year and is within the top 25% of Trusts in the UK for cancer waiting times, meeting the 85% 62-day national standard since August 2019. We deliver Oncology Outpatient Services to a number of Providers across East and West Kent.

The Centre has an income of circa £50m and is home to a custom designed department at Maidstone which opened in April 1993 and dedicated radiotherapy, chemotherapy and outpatient facilities at Canterbury as part of the main District General Hospital, which was upgraded in 2012.

Our chemotherapy units, based at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals, work alongside a dedicated cancer pharmacy and aseptics unit and are run by our experienced chemotherapy nursing team.

Duties of this post will supporting with two other SHOs we have in post. This will include covering our SDEC, Chemotherapy Unit, Radiotherapy. Pharmacy, ward patients and Outpatients. There are teaching opportunities, joining in on clinics, involvement in clinical governance and audit activities.

Due to recent Health Education England (HEE) Funding we have been able to purchase five new state of the art Varian Truebeam Linear Accelerators across the Kent Oncology Centre. Over the 2 sites we have 9 Linear Accelerator Treatment Machines and 3 CT Planning Simulators. Many of our services are Radiographer led and we also benefit from having a Consultant Palliative Consultant on the Canterbury site and soon to have one on the Maidstone site.

The Treatment Radiographers have all been adopted by Macmillan and we have a Macmillan Information Centre on the Maidstone site and are supported on both sites by Macmillan Specialist Radiographers and Macmillan Support Workers.

Kent and Medway Pathology Network is made up of seven laboratories across three pathology services in four acute Trusts – East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and North Kent Pathology Services (hosted by Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust and providing services to Medway Foundation Trust).

The network provides services across the health sector to a population of nearly 2 million.

The network vision is based around:
• A single laboratory information management system (LIMS) and managed services contract (MSC);
• A Director of Pathology Transformation who will work closely with teams and services to design and implement service changes which benefit the whole network;
• A commitment to consider a single management structure at a point in the future; and,
• A general agreement to collaborate, and to align processes and Standard Operating Procedures where it makes sense to do so.

You will not be expected to work at sites outside of Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. However, there will be opportunities for collaborative working within this network

An opportunity has arisen to develop or consolidate your knowledge and skills as a Band 6 Interventional Nurse in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, predominantly based at Maidstone Hospital, although cross site working is expected. Diagnostic Imaging provides a wide range of Patient services within multiple Imaging modalities, including X-Ray, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, and Interventional Radiology.

You will be required to foster good working relationships within a multi-disciplinary department. You should be approachable with good leadership and communication skills. You should also be self-motivated and have excellent time management skills.

We also welcome applications from junior B5 nurses who would like to work towards developing skills in these areas to meet B6 competencies in the future.

We are looking for a candidate who has broad experience in a hospital environment and can demonstrate high quality of Patient care. The role is challenging and the successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of safe, quality care to Patients undergoing Interventional procedures.

You will be encouraged to develop their clinical skills, as part of their ongoing personal and professional development. Ideally, you will have experience in Radiology, Cardiology, A&E, Theatre / Recovery or ITU / HDU, although other experience will also be considered. Training in Interventional Radiology Nursing will be given and it is expected that competencies will be completed within one year of joining the Team.

Hours to be worked between 08:00 –18:00 Monday to Friday (flexibility within these hours will be required and duties will vary each week with 75% of time spent in Interventional Radiography)

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please email mtw-tr.professionalstandards@nhs.net if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.
