The specialist nursing role will actively contribute to the on-going development of the Vascular Access Service across the trust and ensure that it delivers and promotes best practice in the care and management of all vascular access devices, promoting aseptic non touch technique to reduce the risk of device related complications and in particular infection. The post holder will provide specialist service and support and deputise for their line manager in the management of their clinical specialty and in conjunction with the Infection, prevention and control team. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings. Be expert in peripheral intravenous cannulation. Be expert in the insertion and removal of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs). Undertake training and become proficient in utilising ultrasound guided venous cannulation techniques (e.g. peripheral and central veins). Be able to verify tip catheter position and recognition of complications such as pneumothorax using image intensification, ECG technology and tracking devices. Is accountable for own practice and for appropriate delegation of care he/she gives to colleagues, nursing support workers and students. Recognises deterioration in the physical or mental condition of the patient and takes timely action, appropriately referring to others or working with other agencies as required.
