The Clinical Trials Pharmacy consists of Pharmacists, Technicians, Practitioners, Assistants and Apprentices. We receive support from rotational staff such as student technicians, pharmacists. We work closely with research teams across the trust and external representatives.

As a Senior Clinical Trials Pharmacy Technician in our team, you will have an extremely varied role – you will be involved in maintaining the supply chain of Clinical Trial medications to research nurses who deliver treatment to patients, maintaining financial records, completing drug accountability activities, closing down and archiving of completed studies, as well as facilitating meetings from sponsors.

Your core role in Clinical Trials Pharmacy would be to:

Obtain and maintain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training, apply principles of GCP in the management of clinical trials and work within the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trial) Regulations 2004 and EU directive relating to Clinical Trials, communicate with Investigators, Research Nurses, Trust R&D, Sponsors, Clinical Research Associates and Pharmacy staff during the set-up and running of a clinical trial, ensure clinical trial protocols and SOPs are followed during dispensing of clinical trial investigational medicinal products and other drugs included in the protocol, order and receive in clinical trial drugs, process receipt paperwork and acknowledge receipt on IVRS (Electronic Medication Supply) systems, check stock levels and expiry dates of clinical trial drugs and keep balance logs up to date, assist with the packing down and re-labelling of clinical trial drugs if required, assist with the preparation for monitoring meetings, audits and inspections, maintain Clinical Trial files ensuring items can easily be located and are presentable, process returned clinical trial drugs and ensure the paperwork is kept in order, participate in the statutory temperature monitoring of clinical trial stocks, assist with the destruction of clinical trial medication, assist with the closedown and archiving of clinical trial files, represent the Clinical Trials Team to update the dispensary staff at meetings, liaise with Research Nurses to update them on trial progress, stock levels etc, assist in the collection of data as requested by the Senior Clinical Trial Technician or Clinical Trial Pharmacists, assist in maintaining financial records, including the generation of invoices, checking payments etc, assist with general administration such as organising set up meetings etc and be a point of contact within the Clinical Trials Pharmacy Team, maintain clinical trial filing systems and drug accountability documentation for clinical trials, use the computer system and other information technology in all areas of Pharmacy.

Additionally, you would be involved in supporting Clinical Trial Aseptic Unit to:

Participate in the day to day running of the CTASU in line with the rota system, participate in safe systems of work and documentation of these, undertake safe and accurate preparation of a wide range of aseptic products on a daily basis, including cytotoxics, epidurals, antibiotics, injectables, novel agents and monoclonal antibodies, maintain personal expertise, skills and necessary knowledge of the technical aspects of aseptic and non-aseptic dispensing, ensure products are prepared according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), assemble drugs and consumables required for preparation of aseptic products, accurately recording batch numbers and expiry dates, be responsible for the accurate completion of product worksheets and labels, assigning batch numbers to aseptically prepared products, accurately and safely label aseptically prepared products, facilitate the quality assurance of products and to notify the Senior Aseptic Technician of any incidents and procedural deficiencies, be responsible for ensuring finished products are packed prior to distribution to ensure the prompt and safe delivery, ensure finished products are transported in the appropriate environment taking into account any physical & legal requirements, be responsible for unpacking and receipt of deliveries, undertake regular expiry date checking to identify expired or short dated stock, be responsible for monitoring drug stock and consumable levels and replenishing, ensure that all equipment within CTASU is in good working order and serviced regularly, participate in the clean room/isolator cleaning rota, assist in environmental and physical monitoring of the CTASU, be involved in the maintenance of departmental records including staff training, environmental monitoring, cleaning, maintenance logs and worksheets, where applicable to be involved in the delivery of drugs to clinical areas

You will assist in the maintenance of the patient environment in terms of cleanliness, tidiness, auditing, and the restocking and ordering of supplies. You will be part of the team also supporting our Pre op assessment nurses to carry out assessments on our patients that fit certain criteria following out patient hysteroscopy being booked for general anaesthetic.

Qualifications and Experience

The following are the core responsibilities of the Practice Nurse. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels: To be instrumental in the support of the Infection Prevention Control (IPC) lead and to work to the IPC requirements by providing audits, training, support and evidence of compliance to the practice manager To support in the publication of the IPC annual statement in conjunction with the practice manager To develop, implement and embed an effective care management programme for the frail and housebound patients registered at the practice To assess the needs of patients ensuring the provision of healthcare is appropriate, incorporating evidence-based practice To develop, implement and embed health promotion and wellbeing programmes To implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for chronic disease patients that promote health and wellbeing To identify, manage and support patients at risk of developing long-term conditions, preventing adverse effects to patients health As required, to provide routine nursing care to patients in accordance with clinical based evidence, NICE and the NSF As required, to diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions Provide wound care (ulcer/Doppler, etc.) to patients To review patient medications to enhance compliance To provide guidance to patients in the use of prescribed and over-the-counter medications regarding side effects and dosages To co-ordinate the provision of travel medicine services To request pathology services and process pathology results as required To oversee the provision of chronic disease clinics, delivering patient care as necessary, referring patients to secondary/specialist care as required To maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation To ensure SNOMED CT codes are used effectively by all members of the nursing team To ensure the appropriate maintenance and use of chronic disease registers To ensure compliance with the practice chaperone policy To assist GPs with minor surgery when required To prioritise health issues and intervene appropriately To support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies To recognise, assess and refer patients presenting with mental health needs To implement vaccination programmes for adults and children To support patients in the use of their prescribed medicines or over-the-counter medicines (within own scope of practice) To liaise with external services/agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately (vulnerable patients etc.) To delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately (ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual) To support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters, in accordance with local and national policies To understand practice and local policies for substance abuse and addictive behaviour, referring patients appropriately To deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate In addition to the primary key responsibilities, the Practice Nurse may be requested to: Develop and review audit protocols and process for the practice, effectively utilising the audit cycle Develop, review and implement nursing protocols in conjunction with the partners Support all members of the nursing team, providing guidance when necessary, conducting appraisals and training needs analyses as required Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care Support and participate in shared learning within the practice in order to improve patient care Continually review clinical practices, responding to national policies and initiatives where appropriate Participate in the review of significant and near-miss events applying a structured approach, i.e., root cause analysis (RCA) Coordinate the nursing team rota, ensuring sufficient staff are available to meet patient needs Lead the planning and implementation of changes within the nursing team, enhancing the provision of services to patients Support the practice team with the reviewing and implementation of practice policies and protocols, ensuring conformance to extant legislation

The role includes undertaking Healthy Child Programme transitional assessments and planning, delivering and evaluating public health initiatives through school and community-based health promotion activities. The role will require you to adhere to Safeguarding policies and actively engage under the supervision from a SCPHN in safeguarding processes and meetings. You will work in partnership with other agencies and develop, participate and maintain interagency networks. Main Tasks and Responsibilities Patient Care 1. To assess, develop and implement specialist evidence-based Speech and Language Therapy interventions. To make appropriate clinical decisions following assessments, including differential diagnosis, on the basis of evidence from assessment, and to develop care plans based on best practice. 2. To use clinical skills to generate written reports reflecting specialist knowledge. 3. To provide appropriate specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes. The post holder will use these specialist skills to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management for complex clinical issues. 4. To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of patients with communication and swallowing disorders. 5. To work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to achieve patient centred care. 6. To liaise with a wide range of professionals across a variety of locations and agencies. 7. To maintain intense concentration in all aspects of patient management for prolonged periods. In particular, to monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of patients communication, adapting and facilitating according to perceived needs. Policy / Service Development / Implementation 1. To represent Speech and Language Therapy at multi-disciplinary team meetings, ensuring delivery of coordinated care. 2. To be aware of, adhere to and implement Service and team plans including: 3. Providing regular, timely statistical data in keeping with Trust requirements 4. Maintaining high quality clinical records in accordance with Service and Trust Guidelines and within data protection guidelines 5. Ensuring understanding and adherence to Trust health and safety requirements, including attendance on mandatory training courses 6. To work within infection control and health and safety guidelines in order to deal appropriately with unpleasant conditions related to client contact as they arise e.g. exposure to body fluids, infectious conditions encountered on a regular basis 7. Participation in the Trust incident reporting and risk management procedures 8. To use specialist knowledge to inform Service / policy developments as appropriate and to implement policy within own specialist area. 9. To participate in the implementation of Service / Trust Clinical Governance Plan. Financial and Physical Resources 1. To monitor stock levels in own area and to request new equipment as required. 2. To be responsible for the security, care and maintenance of equipment, ensuring standards of infection control and safety are maintained, including equipment loaned to patients. Human Resources 1. To supervise and mentor the junior Speech and Language Therapists, unregistered staff such as Speech and Language Therapy Support Workers and therapy assistants. 2. To participate in student clinical placements and to assist in the support of students from other professional groups. 3. To be able to clearly explain the role of Speech and Language Therapists to visitors, students and other professionals. 4. To participate in ongoing specialist training in area of clinical expertise. 5. To assist in the identification of training needs within the team. Information Resources To maintain up to date and accurate case notes in line with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) professional standards and local policies. To adhere to data protection guidelines when sharing information with others. To gather activity data accurately and regularly, ensuring the provision of this information within local Trust guidelines. Research and Development To participate in and develop innovations in the areas of risk management, quality standards setting and clinical effectiveness. To undertake Clinical Governance / audit projects within the local service. To participate in developmental research and formal / informal Research and Development and clinical governance / audit projects. To collect and provide research data as required.
