Aberdeen City Council is currently in discussions with Trade Unions regarding a proposal to move from a standard 37-hour full-time working week to a standard 35-hour full-time working week.
Please note: A decision has been reached, in consultation with our Trade Unions, that all new vacancies will be advertised on a maximum of 35 hours per week, and accordingly, new appointments made on a contract of 35 hours per week.
job purpose/about the role
To contribute to the fulfilment of Aberdeen City Council’s statutory responsibility for delivering Environmental Health Services.
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, self-motivated Environmental Health Officer who can accept and tackle demanding goals to ensure effective service delivery to protect the public health of people who live in, work in or are visiting Aberdeen City.
Based in the Commercial Environmental Health Team, you will be required to undertake the full range of food law activities, occupational health and safety interventions, inspection of vessels requiring ship sanitation certification and responding to licensing consultations
You will be able to communicate effectively with a commitment to quality and customer care. As an Environmental Health Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring that statutory requirements are complied with, taking enforcement action where necessary and implementing Council policies, with a view to ensuring that risks to public health and safety are adequately controlled; Encouraging compliance with the law and enhancement of public health through promotion, education and advice at all levels. The post will require occasional out of hours work.

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:
- The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) Diploma in Environmental Health or have received confirmation from REHIS of the equivalency of their qualifications.

The postholder is able to demonstrate:
- Ensure that statutory requirements are complied with, taking enforcement action where necessary and implementing Council policies.
- Investigate environmental health related issues that come to the attention of the service and take appropriate action.
- Conduct inspections, audits, surveys etc. with a view to ensuring that risks to public health and/or safety are adequately controlled.
- Encourage compliance with the law and enhancement of public health through promotion and education and advice at all levels.
- Be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of law enforcement
