This clinical fellow post (registrar equivalent) in Critical Care Medicine is at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is available from February 2025 for 6-12 months. Please note: this post is critical care only (no anaesthesia placements). A minimum of 2 years prior experience in ICM, anaesthesia or general medicine is required, including at least 3 months ICM and suitable advanced airway skills. The post is suitable for applicants who have completed core training.

These posts are at registrar level, and successful candidates will be expected to have completed foundation training, have 2 years post foundation experience in acute specialties and to be competent to work with indirect supervision within the intensive care unit. Prior experience in intensive care is required. Evidence of suitable advanced airways skills is also required.

It also includes management of referrals from other departments within the hospital, including the Medical Admissions Units and the Emergency Department and providing medical support for the nursing outreach service. Supervision and teaching of more junior Critical Care residents is an important part of this post.

The posts are intended to provide experience in adult critical care medicine including intensive care training equivalent to that recommended by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.

Clinical:
The post holder will take part in a full shift rota, along with other trainees, which provides 24-hour care for patients including weekends and night shifts. This includes:

• immediate responsibility for care of up to 22 critical care patients
• responsible for the admission and discharge of patients
• liaising with other departments and specialties as appropriate
• maintaining inpatient records
• ordering routine and emergency investigations and receiving and reviewing their results
• managing routine and unexpected problems on the critical care unit as they arise
• reviewing and admitting new admissions and referrals from both the emergency department and wards.

As the post holder will be responsible for the assessment and management of critically ill patients with indirect supervision, significant prior experience in intensive care medicine is essential including advanced airway skills and excellent written and spoken English.

• Satisfactory completion of at least 2 years prior postgraduate training in ICM/anaesthesia/general medicine, to include at least 3 months ICM is essential.

Research:
• We have several national and international trials that we run and recruit to with opportunities for associate PI roles, involvement with the journal club and development of the role as interested

Medical Education:
• The departments have a strong teaching commitment to junior doctors and medical students
• We have a regular weekly teaching program and access to simulation and are developing an in-situ simulation program.
• The post holder will work closely with our education leads to develop the department

Clinical Interest Areas:
• Anaesthesia, maternal medicine, burns, major surgery, transplant, neuro and trauma critical care, recovery after critical illness. The role will primarily be based in critical care with the option to develop specialist interest skills and be supervised by specialists in the above areas to develop clinical and non-clinical skills managing these patient groups.
• Opportunities for quality improvement projects and dedicated time in the subspecialty area.

Ultrasound (FUSIC mentors):
• Critical care has a number of FUSIC mentors allowing trainees to undertake formal echo/chest/vascular ultrasound training.

Clinical:
The post will attract up to 10 programmed activities (7.0 CHIPS / 3.0 St Oswald’s). Within the 10 PA job plan, appropriate time will be built in for SPA activity.

Planned activities will include home, hospital and hospice visits, complex case meetings, contributing to specialist team MDTs and developing links within the region; with community teams and inpatient specialist teams. In addition to this, it is expected that at least one consultant each day will be available for unplanned activities such as clinical consults and urgent requests.

On-call Duties:
0.25 PA is included to cover weekend telephone advice 9am-5pm that occurs 1 in 5 weekends with CHIPS.

An availability supplement will be allocated to contribute to St Oswald’s on call arrangements (up to 1 in 4 non-resident on call which can be combined with weekends providing telephone CHIPS advice).

Currently there is no 24 hour advice line available for paediatric palliative care within our region, but with anticipated increase in funding it is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to an on call rota for specialist advice out of hours in the future.

Administrative:
The appointee will be expected to take a role in management and administration within the department.

Research:
The appointee’s help and involvement in current research within paediatric palliative medicine will be welcomed, and the development and extension of his/her own research fields will be encouraged. There is an opportunity for research to be supported within the job plan, and this can be discussed with the successful applicant if it is something that they are interested in pursuing.

The appointees will be expected to participate in audit and present audit data at palliative care service review meetings and at Directorate Clinical Governance Meetings.

Teaching and education:
The appointee will be expected to contribute to undergraduate teaching and post-graduate teaching, and to the higher specialist training of registrars in paediatrics as a clinical and/or educational supervisor.

The appointee will participate in the delivery of palliative care education across the region, according to need, to enable local teams who are delivering palliative care to develop their knowledge and skill in this area.

Miscellaneous:
The successful candidate will be expected on occasion to travel to any location across the North East and North Cumbria. Car sharing is encouraged and mileage is paid.

Office space, personal computer, teleconference facilities and secretarial assistance will be provided at the GNCH site. We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. The post is available from February 2025 for 6 months, with the possibility of extension. This is a Senior Clinical fellow position in upper GI surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, with a contribution to emergency surgery at the RVI.

The General Surgery Directorate is a busy directorate, and the post will give significant experience in Upper GI procedures, including oesophageal and gastric resections, benign upper GI cases and general surgery. It would be ideal for a surgeon with significant experience in surgery, particularly towards the end of his/her training looking for further experience prior to obtaining CCT or commencing work as a consultant. The successful candidate will also be exposed to the management of major trauma as the Royal Victoria Infirmary is the regional trauma centre. Please note, this post does not contribute towards Consultant seniority.

The post is attached to the department of Upper GI surgery based primarily at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). The individual will work alongside the upper GI surgeons at the RVI. The individual will work on the specialist register tier and will, as such, be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility at this level. This post will be attractive to pre and post CCT individuals who require additional specialist training prior to applying for a consultant position or simply increasing their surgical experience prior to applying for Specialist Registrar posts.

Clinical:
• The doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients to which they are allocated under the direct supervision of the consultant. In addition, they are expected to provide cross cover for all patients in the Unit when required to do so. Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, operating theatre sessions, and administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, etc) and participate on the emergency on-call rota at registrar level.

Administrative:
• Each Junior Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to them by the consultants

Research:
• This directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects. The high volume of specialist activity performed in the Directorate ensures there is vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects. Such activity is encouraged and results presented at regional, national and international meetings.

Teaching:
• The Unit has Stage II and III medical students attached to it. Each Junior Doctor is expected to assist in their teaching together with the teaching and supervision of the Foundation Doctors and in all post-graduate activities of the Unit. There is a strong commitment to the FOCP (Foundation of Clinical Practice) programme and HPB (hospital-based practice) and all members of the team are expected to contribute.
