The mortuary service at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for either a qualified anatomical pathology technologist or a trainee who is a degree graduate with a biological or forensic degree and wishes to start a career in anatomical pathology.

To qualify as an anatomical pathology technologist you will need to complete the RSPH level 3 diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology. We encourage staff to continue their training with the level 4 diploma to become specialist anatomical pathology technologists. Both qualifications are supported by the Trust.

Candidates need a flexible approach to work with a positive attitude and ability to cope with the varied and demanding work supporting end of life care.

Successful candidates will participate in cross site working and when trained, participate in an on call out of hours service.



To work as part of a team to assist in the provision of mortuary services -
• assist in the preparation of the bodies for post-mortem
• assist pathologists during post-mortem examination

Clinical Practice
• Receive and record the receipt of cadavers from wards and other sources
• Undress cadavers as required and place in refrigerator, using mechanical hoist when possible.
• Safeguard any property and valuables accompanying the cadaver in line with Trust and Coroner’s procedures.
• Assist in the preparation of cadavers for post mortem examination, assisting the pathologist as required during the examination, at all times having due regard for the dignity of the deceased and any constraints imposed by the relatives’ consent to post mortem
• Assist in the removal of tissues or organs for use in diagnosis, medical education or research, or for medico-legal investigations, preserving samples in formaldehyde if required.
• Remove cardiac implants
• Assist in more complex anatomical dissections e.g. removal of spinal cord
• Participate in high risk an forensic post-mortem examinations.
• Replace organs and restore the external structure of the cadaver by suturing.
• Liaise with undertakers and record the release and removal of cadavers (and property) from hospital premises, ensuring compliance with all necessary paperwork (local release consent forms; Coroner’s Burial Certificate, Certificate E, Interim Death Certificate, or ‘Out of England’ Certificate; Registrar’s Form 9; Cremation Certificates B and C; ‘Free from Infection’ Certificate)
• Participate in the preparation of disinfectants in accordance and perform routine decontamination and cleaning of the post mortem rooms, refrigerators, and their environs.
• Help to monitor the adequacy of resources and equipment, reporting any deficiencies to the designated Senior Mortuary Technician.
• Despatch biological samples to testing laboratories ensuring that sample packaging is compliant with specimen transport guidelines
Management and organisational role
• Practice in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal codes for HTA and the Trust’s protocols and guidelines. Is accountable for own practice.

• Communicate with other members of the team, demonstrating good work relations with all members of staff to promote effective team working.
• Communicate effectively with other staff groups, both internal and external. To include healthcare professionals, external agencies e.g. designated officers of HM coroner and visiting police personnel, commercial suppliers, service engineers and visitors to the mortuary.
• When required liaise with hospital officers and porter staff to facilitate viewing of cadavers by relatives and others, ensuring that the Viewing Rooms provide a sensitive and dignified setting
for the purpose
• When required by the mortuary manager liaise with nursing staff in the Women’s Centre and other hospitals to facilitate receipt and return of foetuses and babies sent for post-mortem
examination, facilitating viewings by relatives and others
• Liaise with designated officers of HM Coroner and visiting police personnel
• Provide training support and assistance to newly appointed APTs, Trainee APTs and bereavement staff. Role includes the demonstration of procedures to less experienced staff.
• Monitor and maintain the adequacy of resources and equipment.
• Prepare weekly / monthly order lists as requested
• Be aware of Clinical Governance, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and Safety polices, reporting problems, errors or breaches to the immediate supervisor completing incident reports as required.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Healthcare Support Worker to join our friendly and supportive team of nurses and Doctors in the Dermatology Outpatients Department. This is a busy department that sees in excess of 50,000 outpatients and day cases, with a wide range of dermatology conditions.

This post is funding by Thames Valley Cancer Alliance and the post holder would liaise with them regarding the development of a breast pain pathway which is locally feasible in OUH to share ways of re-directing breast pain patients away from 2 week wait clinics onto more appropriate diagnostic pathways.

The post holder would develop and then submit their breast pain pathway for assessment by the Association of Breast Surgery Clinical Practice & Standards Committee as outline on the ABS website under ‘ASPIRE Breast Pain pathways’.

The ABS is very conscious of the stress to capacity caused by large volumes of symptomatic breast referrals to breast units across the UK and is looking to assess the strategies being used by units to address the significant proportion of these which are for patients with breast pain.

The post holder would work on this project in additional to clinical commitments in this busy breast surgery department. An exact timetable, with dedicated time for the project, would be worked out in discussion with the Clinical Lead.



The Breast Unit in Oxford sees approximately 8,000 referrals per year with over 600 newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer. They are treated at the Cancer Centre at the Churchill Hospital, (which is also home to the NHS Breast Screening Programme), and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury.



We have an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team with one stop clinics supported by 6 breast radiologists and 3 breast pathologists, medical and clinical oncologists, cancer genetics, plastic surgery and lymphoedema services.



The fellow will be working under the supervision of 7 consultants (4 are part-time and one is an Associate Specialist). The unit provides a full range of Oncoplastic breast surgery service in collaboration with the plastic surgery team, who provide a free-flap reconstruction service.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:



Clinical:



Elective

The post holder’s duties will beacross the various hospitals inthe Trust. The post-holder will work predominantly on theBreast Unit as a fellow. The successful candidate will have regular access to operating lists, with exposure to the complete range of breast proceduresand results clinics for training in various aspects of planning and counselling patients for their appropriate oncological and reconstructive procedures. The post holder will be expected to provide support to the diagnostic and follow-up clinics



Emergency / Out of hours

The post does not involve any on call work. The postholder, however, will be expected to respond appropriately to referrals from the wards, General Practice and the Surgical Emergencies Unit. Optional weekend work is regularly available and is reimbursed as additional sessions.





Research & Audit:

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in the research and audit activities of the department.





Teaching:

Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. Clinical Governance

This is a highly responsible role, and the successful applicant will be part of a team that is dedicated to improving the lives of cancer patients in the Thames Valley and more broadly across the UK. The post holder will work between the Haematology Trials Unit, Late Phase Oncology Trial Unit, both based at the Churchill Hospital, and the OUH Research and Development Team. The two trial units conduct a wide spectrum of Phase I to Phase III clinical trials in cancer with the aim of transforming care of cancer patients. The post holder will be responsible to manage all the income generated from clinical trials is captured, invoiced and received and that expenditure (principally on staff costs) is monitored by Haematology trial units. The post holder will work closely with the R&D Service Manager , the data teams in both trial units, OUH R&D finance teams and the medical and nursing management of both trial units. Ensuring the financial sustainability of both trial units is critical to their success.

This job description outlines the core requirements expected of a Band 5 Business Support & Performance Officer. As such the list below is not exhaustive. Specific requirements related to any specialist area of practice will be outlined with the prospective post holder and included as an addition to these generic descriptors as role specific prior to employment.
1. On a weekly basis working with the trial unit data teams to record money to be billed on each clinical trial conducted by both units, to sponsors of clinical trials. This constitutes the income of each unit.
2. Contacting trial sponsors to make sure invoices are issued promptly.
3. Checking invoices from trial sponsors to correct any irregularities in invoiced issued by trial sponsors and working with trial sponsors to resolve any queries.
4. Providing OUH Finance correct invoices for OUH finance to bill.
5. Checking with OUH Trial Finance that invoices have been paid.
6. On a monthly basis reviewing the expenditure of each unit. This will mainly consist of staff costs.
7. Provide monthly Excel spreadsheet reports of income and expenditure and providing forward yearly forecasts, to the leadership of each trial unit.
8. Provide budgets for new staff posts as they are created.

Applicants are sought for the position of a Glaucoma fellow based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford from August 2025. The post is for a period of 6 months in the first instance extended to 12 months subject to satisfactory progress.

Candidates should be in possession of Outcome 6 at ARCP before commencing in post or be post CCST or equivalent and wish to specialise in Glaucoma. This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their core ophthalmology training, are experience independent cataract surgeons (including complex cataract surgery), have undertaken some glaucoma training (clinics and glaucoma surgery) but seek specialist experience in Glaucoma management prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. Training in all aspects of Glaucoma is provided including,







The postholder’s duties will be primarily atthe John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxfordbut their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as Witney, Abingdon or Banbury.
• Clinical management,
• laser (SLT and YAG),
• Develop skill in performing complex cataract surgery,
• Traditional glaucoma surgeries (aqueous shunts, trabeculectomy) and

A clinical trials unit is active and research opportunities are available and encouraged.

Participation in the on-call rota is the norm at a frequency of 1:11. It is not an approved training post.

Medical staff in training

In addition to the 21 Consultant staff members, we have 4 Clinical Research Fellows, 9 Specialty Registrars, 1 Clinical Lecturer, 15 Clinical Fellows, 2 Associate Specialists, 1 Foundation Year doctor and 6 clinically trained ophthalmologists undertaking full time research in the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology. The medical staff has extensive support from the optometry, orthoptics, imaging and the nursing department in outpatients, theatre and the wards. The Oxford Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service is also part of the department.











Oxford John Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. Robin’s Ward is the specialist surgery ward caring for children requiring craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, plastics, ENT and Neurosurgery. The Hospital’s Theatre Direct Admission service also runs from Robin’s Ward. There are many opportunities for gaining specialist skills and further development.

Kamran’s Ward cares for Children of all ages receiving treatment for cancer or haematology conditions. There is lots of opportunity for professional development within this speciality and the well established team is supportive and progressive

Bellhouse Drayson Ward provides care for children aged 0-12yrs with all medical conditions specialising in Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Cardiology and Respiratory medicine as either elective or emergency admissions. There are close links with Children’s CDU and Children’s ED. The team are cohesive and supportive in providing high quality care on a busy acute ward.

Childrens CDU is a 24 hour unit which links closely with children’s Emergency Department to provide care for children from a range of specialities who need further assessment, observation, continuation of treatment or to await results. The unit also sees GP referrals and ward attenders which gives varied dynamics to the busy unit. CDU is friendly and ensures the cohesive team works closely together and provides strong support and opportunities to develop.

Melanie’s Ward cares for the older patients from 12 years through to transition at 18 years. The work is varied and interesting as it covers all specialities seen in Oxford including psycho-social and mental health aspects of care. Patients are admitted both electively and as emergencies and the work is never dull! Melanie’s Ward team are versatile and supportive with a strong emphasis on team work.

Tom’s Ward is a large, busy surgical unit caring for children requiring both elective and emergency surgical treatment. The Ward specialises in Neonatal surgery, orthopaedic, spinal and general surgery. As with all the Wards, Clinical Educators support the professional development of team members.

The Ambulatory care service sees patients in two Outpatient departments and the Children’s Daycare Ward. Children have day case surgery, investigations or treatment for a wide variety of conditions. The friendly team work efficiently and cohesively to manage the busy throughput of patients.

Paediatric Critical Care (PCC)PCC provides tertiary level intensive care and high dependency care to the children of Oxford and the Thames valley region. We care for a case mix of 0–16-year-olds who require emergency and planned care for a wide range of conditions, including respiratory, neurological, cardiology (medical), cancers, trauma, and surgery. PCC has a children’s outreach service, which supports Childrens care through the whole of the Childrens hospital. And a shared retrieval service as part of SORT (Southampton and Oxford retrieval Team). We have structured education and development opportunities and a really supportive team.

The Horton “The children’s ward at the Horton General Hospital is a small and friendly paediatric unit which looks after a variety of specialities from medicine to surgery. They care for children from 0-18 years age of age, have 14 beds and have dedicated day surgery lists up to 4 times a week. Every day is different and the Children’s ward strives to offer the best quality family centre care they can. You would be supported by a team of band 6’s, experienced band 5 nurses and ward sisters to aid your development enabling you to develop your skills.”

Clinical/Scientific
1) Deliver the clinical service of a section/subsection of the laboratory or designated area of work to nationally accepted standards (CPA/UKAS or equivalent) with appropriate technical support to include the following:
a. Undertake or supervise the receipt, processing and analysis of samples;
and the checking, interpretation and reporting of results (both standard
and complex).
b. Access relevant sources of information to aid interpretation of patient
results, including critical appraisal of the information.
c. Collate patient and clinical information to assist and support future patient management.
d. Interpret results with advice on further action for patient or family
members, including calculation of risk where appropriate, within relevant
professional guidelines.
2) Undertake appropriate complex or specialist technical and analytical procedures, as required, to process cells from a variety of biological specimens received which may be high risk (e.g. HIV, Hep C) and/ or derived from recognisable human or fetal parts. 3) Undertake extended periods of analysis to identify genomic variation either through analysis of large data sets or examination of cytogenetic preparations
4) Independently check and validate the analysis findings of other registered scientists, non-registered scientists and genetic technologists, authorising repeat analyses or subsequent investigations in accordance with laboratory protocols.
Identify unusual results and bring them to the attention of senior scientists for further discussion
5) Interpret findings from the range of investigations undertaken on a patient.
Undertake detailed literature review and interrogation of databases to investigate the clinical significance of genomic variation detected. Prepare reports with clinical interpretation for final authorisation by Senior Registered Clinical Scientists/Principal Scientists/Consultant Scientists
6) To authorise specified reports within their area of expertise where deemed competent by the Head of Laboratory under the direction of the Head of Section
7) Act in an advisory capacity to clinical colleagues on the submission of samples,
appropriate tests and in the interpretation of results in designated areas of the service
8) Under the guidance of the Head of Service, attend appropriate multidisciplinary team meetings on behalf of the service to give professional opinion on clinical cases
9) Supply a high level of scientific skill and expertise in the investigative procedures involved and take a high level of responsibility for his/her own work, with limited supervision from senior personnel in the laboratory. Be adaptable to changing diagnostic workload pressures, by making independent day-to-day decisions about own workload (e.g. prioritising own diagnostic cases or deciding when to undertake additional investigations). Patient administration underpins the patient journey and supports clinical teams in delivering high quality patient care and can make a real difference to the patient experience. Effective and efficient patient administration supports management through ensuring a high standard of data quality and by making the best use of capacity and resources.

The position is for 37.5 hours per week, working across 5 days Monday-Friday.

The post holder will work with, and supervise the outpatient reception team and ensure the provision of a professional, comprehensive and efficient reception and booking service for patients and members of the department. You will also provide administrative support for the Consultant and Lead podiatrists in line with the patient pathway co-ordinator role.

You should have previous clerical/administrational experience, a good standard of education and IT skills. Excellent prioritisation and organisation skills are essential. Experience of managing people is desirable.

Supervising the outpatient reception team and liaising with the Admin Manager and Service Manager. You will also be the main point of contact for all administrative queries relating to the day to day running of the reception and outpatient clinics.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST

To manage the Treasury, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Sections, working to maximise efficiency and timeliness of processing transactions.

Reporting and managing the Trust’s cash balances, presenting clear information to senior colleagues in a timely manner to allow key decisions to be made.

Present cases considering a range of possibilities for areas for improvement either to save money, or to enhance services, or become more efficient. This will include analysing options and evaluating complex scenarios to be able to advise decision makers. End-to-end project management of any cases gaining approval, seeing through to conclusion and successful implementation.

Working with colleagues in Finance and other departments to develop systems and procedures, increasing efficiency and quality and timeliness of information.

To ensure appropriate training and development of Finance staff.

Be a key member of the team involved in the preparation of the Trust’s statutory accounts including planning and managing the exercise to agree NHS balances.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Team Management

• Manage Treasury, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable Sections, developing and agreeing work plans for the teams

• Responsible for recruitment to teams and setting objectives for team managers and teams as a whole

• Setting and monitoring targets for teams

• Responsible for development of teams and any system improvements

• Review of monthly performance figures working with team managers to investigate and explain significant trends and to develop action plans

2. Accounts Payable Section and Procurement

• Develop links with suppliers to address issues in supply chain processes, including procurement and payment of invoices. As part of this process, work to develop and automate systems and procedures involving Procurement Department where appropriate

• Administration of Purchasing Cards for the Trust, dealing with card applications, ensuring payment and posting of monthly balances and transactions

• Dealing with queries and requests for information on suppliers, either for suppliers themselves or for management and other departments in the Trust

• Dealing with VAT queries raised by finance colleagues and other Trust departments

3. Income and Debtors

• Working with colleagues in Finance and Commissioning, develop process for the efficient invoicing of NHS organisations and subsequent follow up/debt escalation arrangements.

• Develop efficient processes for all other invoicing within the Trust

• Working with the Accounts Receivable Manager and debtors team to develop efficient and effective arrangements for debtor follow up and internal monitoring arrangements

• Review recommended write-offs of bad debts and provision for doubtful debts and decide on the write-offs and provision adjustments to be made in the Trust accounts each month

• Review recommended list of debtors to pass to collection agency and decide on items to refer, consulting with Income team where appropriate

• Work with Accounts Receivable Manager to monitor debt collection agency performance, and where appropriate to change debt collection arrangements

• Dealing with queries and requests for information on income and debtors, e.g. for Trust management or other departments in the Trust

• Receiving, interpreting and planning local implementation of national and regional guidance and policies

• Where appropriate contacting issuers of guidance for clarification or to raise issues

• Administration of Purchasing Cards for the Trust, dealing with card applications, ensuring payment and posting of monthly balances and transactions

4. Systems and procedures - general

• Develop systems and procedures for income/debtor, treasury and accounts payable teams, both internal procedures and procedures which affect other departments and other organisations

• Responsible for contributing on development of major finance system changes across the Finance Department, including involvement in

- deciding on systems to be brought in
- planning implementation
- planning and carrying out system testing
- training of staff

This includes the main finance ledger, and also database systems maintained in the Finance Department, and systems in other departments which have an impact on Finance

• Responsible for ensuring month-end processes are complete and reports are produced accurately and in a timely manner

• liaising with Trusts VAT consultants ensuring they are consulted on key matters with potential VAT implications such as major contracts and capital projects and attending VAT Review Meetings

• liaising with Internal and External auditors, dealing with queries and responding to and implementing recommendations

• be a key member of the team preparing the Trust’s statutory accounts including planning and managing the exercise to agree NHS balances

• Board Reporting – complete appropriate reports related to cash management, accounts receivable and accounts payable, present to senior finance colleagues and be able to explain sensitive and potentially contentious information

• Receiving, interpreting and planning local implementation of national and regional guidance and policies impacting on Financial Services/Accounting issues. Where appropriate contacting issuers of guidance for clarification or to raise issues

• Assisting in developing, implementing and maintaining financial processes and procedures

• Developing reports to assist in the provision of information to Trust Management, Finance colleagues and other key contacts

5. Staff Training and Development

• Responsible for planning and organising Financial Services staff training and development including any trainees/apprentices or placement students


• Contributing to the development and delivery of Finance training to other departments in the Trust

6. Cash Management

• Develop cash reporting and monitoring processes that meet the needs of the Trust including internal and external requirements

• Identify areas for improving the Trust’s cash balances
