The Senior Programme Manager is a key role delivering the strategic aims of the Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance.

Providing leadership of a defined portfolio of work across the Central and South geography, in both primary and secondary care, this exciting role will provide transformational leadership through the delivery of a defined set of actions.

This role requires the interpretation of national guidance and translating this into a defined work programme with associated line management and budgetary responsibility. The work programme comprises detailed projects that meet key requirements in the NHS Long Terms Plan as well as requirements from the National Cancer Programme.

You will be required to use complex analytical skills, tact and diplomacy across a range of work programmes and will have overall accountability for the delivery of the work programme through the line management of key individuals.

You will establish robust strategic relationships across multi professional groups, all care sectors and ICBs supporting the work programme.

Duties:

An MT/CLS at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens using manual or automated techniques and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The work performed is in a variety of primary laboratory disciplines, such as reference laboratory, chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), urinalysis, coagulation, hematology, immunohematology (blood banking), bacteriology, molecular biology, flow cytometry, genetics, immunology, mycology, parasitology, serology, and virology. • Modifies or adapts new methods or techniques to improve or expand services.
• Develops protocols for performance of tests, phlebotomy applications and evaluation of results.

The Role and Department

YOUR MAIN DUTIES

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the innovative and dynamic Neonatal Intensive Care Service at University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) as a Consultant Neonatologist. Two substantive posts are available as a result of expansion of neonatal services and an increase in consultant cover in line with BAPM recommendations.

The successful applicants will complete a team of 11 WTE neonatologists who provide a comprehensive neonatal service to medical and surgical neonates at Princess Anne Hospital in a 38 bed NICU (24 IC/ HDU, 14 SC) with 800 admissions per year, increasing to 42 cots after expansion. UHS is the lead centre within Wessex Neonatal ODN, providing tertiary neonatal services including cardiology, cardiac surgery, surgery, endocrinology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery for complex infants within Southampton Children’s Hospital. In addition, UHS hosts the Southampton hub of the Southampton-Oxford Neonatal Transport Service which undertakes 600 transfers per year.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The successful applicantwill be expected to deliver clinical excellence within the speciality of Neonatal Medicine and must the have skills to deliver neonatal intensive care within a tertiary NICU with neonatal surgical and cardiac subspecialty patients. They will undertake Consultant neonatal duties including providing and supervising medical care to neonates within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), postnatal wards and neonatal clinics. Supporting the care of neonates within other areas of the Trust, working collaboratively with colleagues within subspecialties, Obstetrics, Midwifery and the Fetal Medicine service. They will also undertake duties in UHS hub of the Consultant led Network Transport service and participate in an on-call rota in conjunction with the existing team to provide Consultant cover to the Neonatal Service and the Neonatal transport service.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The successful candidate would be expected to deliver clinical excellence, be motivated and adaptable to changes within the NHS, and have a drive to improve patient care and services. A willingness to develop and work within a constantly changing environment is necessary together with an ability to remain calm under pressure. The successful candidate ideally will bring additional skills and special interests that complement the existing neonatal team. This might include, but is by no means limited to, an interest in perinatal care including antenatal counselling and liaison with fetal medicine, perinatal and neonatal palliative care, family integrated care, and transition to tertiary paediatric services. Skills and experience in point of care ultrasound, including echocardiography, would also be beneficial, but again not essential

Candidates should have a CCT in Neonatesorequivalent experience as defined by the Neonatal CSAC (either 36 months of level 3 neonatology or 24 months level 3 neonatal experience with 12 months allied specialities at ST6-8)orexperience as a consultant in a level 3 neonatal unit, and be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Trainees who are within six months of obtaining their neonatal CCT on the date of the AAC may also apply. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

Job responsibilities A Registrar (Specialist Trainee 3-7) and SHOs (Specialist trainee 1/2, GP and F2 trainees) support a 1:8 rota for each level. A consultant is resident for the majority of the time, after 10pm they can be off site if work allows and be called in to support when needed. Regular morning ward rounds of in-patients in both obstetrics and gynecology. Assessment of patients in Day Assessment / Triage in Obstetrics, The Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynecology Unit is required during the day and Labour Ward cover is also integral. Elective Caesarean Section lists occur daily during the week when junior trainees are supervised operating on cases suitable for their level of training by consultants and senior trainees. Trainees are expected to participate in regular appropriate handovers to their colleagues and follow up patients with abnormal results. There are opportunities for supervised scanning in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and to learn and improve on surgical skills.
