We’re looking for an apprentice healthcare science practitioner to join #TeamUHD. The three-year apprenticeship, delivered by University of West England (UWE) will lead to a degree in BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science Practitioner (diagnostic radiology).
As well as your studies which will be a variety of in-person and virtual learning at UWE, you’ll undertake practical training whilst working with a team of senior practitioners and clinical scientists providing the scientific and technical support to the ionising radiation physics department at UHD.
Gaining skills and experience of medical physics, you’ll be observing, assisting and performing procedures under direct supervision while working in accordance with radiation and safety regulations.
You’ll communicate effectively within the healthcare environment and clinical team, adapting communication to meet varying needs and overcoming barriers to understanding, applying academic learning and developing patient-centred skills.
You’ll work in accordance with Trust and NHS standards, the Practitioner Standards of Proficiency (AHCS) and the HCPC standards.

Entry requirements
• Government funding rules require that an apprentice has the right to live and work in the UK
• Mandatory Level 2 qualifications
• All apprentices must have English and Mathematics qualifications equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above.
• Accepted Level 3 qualifications with no or minimal (less than 4 years) relevant work experience:
• A level - a minimum of 96 points (CCC) including at least one relevant STEM subject (e.g. physics, engineering or Mathematics) at 32 points/Grade C or higher.
• BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science – including pass grades in units that relate to the PTP specialism specified within the application.
• BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade MMM, including at least one relevant STEM subject.
• Access to Higher Education Diploma - at least 45 credits achieved at level 3 (minimum 45 at Merit); 15 level 3 credits must be in STEM-based units.

To assist in the provision of diagnostic radiology physics (DRP) and radiation protection services (ionising radiations) throughout East Dorset.
Location: Primarily based at Poole Hospital with frequent cross site working at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and occasional visits to other SLA sites across Dorset, with three five-day blocks at UWE Bristol each year.

Following suitable instruction/training the apprentice will undertake the following:
• To undertake administrative duties within the DRP group including:
• Entering information relating to the work of the group into databases and spreadsheets and ensuring all issues are followed up by scientific staff.
• Booking visits to clients for the purpose of radiation surveys etc.
• Booking rooms for and arranging meetings with the various QC and client groups
• Development of spreadsheets and databases as required by the scientific staff
• Day to day monitoring of the QC spreadsheets used by clients, ensuring all issues are followed up by scientific staff
• Assisting the Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) with administrative work as required
• Follow departmental protocols and procedures to comply with current best practice and / or legislation
• Creating and maintaining records of equipment QC testing and patient dosimetry audits.
• Preparation of documentation and equipment for work outside the department
• Organisation of training meetings for external clients (e.g. private dental practices)
• Organisation of advertising of services of the group to local x-ray users
• Assist in the provision of radiation protection and quality assurance services. This work will include evaluating x-ray equipment, requiring high precision measurements.
• Assist in compliance with appropriate legislation, professional guidance and current good practice advice in radiation protection.
• Arrange and perform routine area and environmental monitoring in and around medical x-ray facilities and report findings to the appropriate RPA.
• Assist in assessing the radiation protection and imaging performance aspects of all new radiological imaging equipment, as part of the commissioning process.
• Assist in the evaluation of long term performance of radiological imaging equipment.
• Assist in providing the Medical Physics quality assurance programme for the Dorset Breast Screening Service.
• Liaise with other Professional Staff, both inside and outside the Trusts, regarding relevant aspects of the Medical Physics service.
