This is a fixed term full time post for 12-months for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology, to work within an evolving Infection Service based in the Department of Pathology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTHTR), based at Royal Preston Hospital.

As a Senior Clinical Fellow, you will have a Consultant in the directorate nominated as their educational supervisor and you will participate in providing medical microbiology services under Consultant supervision.



You may be asked to participate in the provision of an out of hour’s service as outlined in the training programme and expected to participate in regular clinical audit and in risk management relating to microbiology and infection control.

It will not permit the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) as this would require completion of a five year programme.

The Medical Microbiology service includes: advice regarding appropriate specimens and investigations, interpretation of results, patient management including appropriate choice of antibiotics, preventive measures, and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines. This may be through responding to incoming telephone enquiries, regular attendance at ward rounds, and involvement in the management of individual patients on Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) requiring full clinical liaison in response to referrals or laboratory results.

You may be asked to participate in the provision of an out of hour’s service as outlined in the training programme and you will attend in regular clinical audit and in risk management relating to microbiology and infection control.

To participate in the teaching of medical students, laboratory staff, junior doctors, general practitioners, EHOs, nurses, and other health professionals, including professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, as appropriate.



You would be expected to keep up to date in terms of their knowledge and the skills and techniques relevant to the duties of the post and maintain registration with the General Medical Council.





The Trust is committed to patient safety and minimising the risk of spread of infection. The Trust has a multidisciplinary infection prevention control team (IPCT) which provides support to the clinical services to help reduce the risk of infection. The IPCT comprises infection control nurses, pharmacists and administrative support.



A programme to expand the molecular biology service in the directorate is currently taking place and microbiology is a key stakeholder in this development.



The Department is accredited for the training of BMS staff and is approved for the training of medically qualified Microbiologists.

Incorporated on the ward is a busy Paediatric Assessment Unit and High Dependency Unit for children requiring closer observation.

We are seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow to work within an extremely busy Trauma Centre. You would be a participant on a 1 in 11 middle grade rota in a MTC and would provide an excellent opportunity for a suitable person wishing to increase their experience in the management of Orthopaedic Trauma in a Major Trauma Centre and complex sub speciality care.

The post holder will be required to work across Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital. The post is initially for6 months with a possible 6 months’ extension.

This post is not formally approved for training and would also provide a study leave budget for attendance at national trauma courses and conferences. Ample opportunity will be available to the candidates to enhance portfolio with logbook, CBD, DOPS, Teaching, Audit and Research etc. The Directorate have a very successful record of previous candidates being successful in CESR application.

The post will include a mixture of fixed trauma operating sessions, fixed outpatient sessions, trauma on-call commitments and trauma weeks and elective operating sessions and would involve working closely with a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon covering elective and trauma surgery.

There are 18 Trauma Consultants. During the Trauma week, planned activities are replaced by the Trauma week activities.

Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced in Oct 2003. We offer the full range of acute outpatient and inpatient services to the 380,000 people living in Central Lancashire.

You will also develop non-clinical skills in service development and quality improvement. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Clinical Fellow in Major Trauma and Emergency Medicine to join our esteemed team. This role is perfect for an experienced clinician wishing to develop their trauma skills and experience trauma care at Lancashire Teaching Hospital. We are a tertiary centre that covers all specialties except cardiothoracic, giving you plenty of opportunities to see a wide variety of trauma cases. Whilst in post you will have designated time to develop your major trauma experience. There will also be allocated time to attend surgical skills and trauma specific courses along with airway lists should you wish to develop these skills further.

As a Senior Clinical Fellow, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality patient care, leading advanced clinical procedures, and contributing to both the educational and research missions of our department. You will be allocated to trauma shifts and hold a key role in managing complex traumas.

The Emergency Medicine Directorate of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs two Emergency Departments at Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital. It provides a comprehensive 24 hour service at the Royal Preston Hospital site and 12 hour service (staffed for 14 hours) on the Chorley site. In the year 2016-17 the Emergency Department at Royal Preston Hospital saw 85,594 attendances and there were 35,715 attendances at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital.



In April 2012 the Royal Preston Hospital was designated the regional Major Trauma Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria and consequently provides consultant trauma team leadership from 8am to midnight 7 days a week. The Trust has invested in a new CT scanner with direct access to the resuscitation room in the Emergency Department at Preston and there is on-going building work to upgrade the Emergency Department in Preston and improve the physical relationship with the Urgent Care Centre – recently an extension and refurbishment to the resuscitation area, development of a RATs area.
