Main duties of the job;
• Develop and manage a patient centred nursing service
• Assume twenty four hour responsibility for the provision of a nursing service in the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU)
• Promote effective communication and teamwork at all levels
• Demonstrate clinical leadership skills and evidence of specialist knowledge
• Management of staff within the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) including human resource management, clinical governance and risk management.
• Utilise resources effectively, working within allocated budget
• Contribute significantly toward the strategic and operational development of the EAU
Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) a world renowned centre of clinical excellence and one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the UK. The Trust is made up of four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital (which includes the Children's Hospital, West Wing, Eye Hospital, Heart Centre and Women's Centre), the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, all located in Oxford, and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.
We provide a wide range of clinical services including stroke, ambulatory medicine, surgery, oncology and surgery. The Trust also provides specialist services (including cardiac, cancer, musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation and a full range of children’s’ services including critical and new born care) medical education, training and research.
Most services are provided in our hospitals, but over six percent are delivered from 44 other locations across the region, and some in patients' homes.
We have an extensive range of collaborations including the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University which underpins the quality of the care that is provided to patients.
The overall purpose of this role is to: -

Main Responsibilities
Clinical Practice and research
The post holder will: -
• Deliver a patient centred style of practice that reflects and promotes the beliefs and values of professional nursing practice and patient care in the EAU Department, acting as a role model for other nursing and multidisciplinary team staff
• Provide expert clinical advice to nurses and members of the multi-disciplinary team both at Departmental and Trust level.
• Set and maintain standards of practice, conduct and decision making and monitor staff compliance
• Develop and maintain specialist policies and protocols for the department based on current research and evidence
• Promote effective communication and liaison with other health care professionals with ongoing responsibility for patient care.
• Adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice at all times.
• Demonstrate a commitment to research, evidence based practice and clinical excellence, playing an instrumental role in the introduction of research-based changes to improve patient centred care.
• Act as a clinical leader and develop a team of nurses, providing support and clinical supervision.
• Support and facilitate practice development, research and clinical project work within the department
• Act as a specialist clinical expert / resource within the Trust, providing advice and information as required
• Conduct annual staff appraisals, giving constructive feedback, facilitating development of personal development plans and ensuring objectives are met.
• Provide support and guidance for mentors.
Management and Organisational role
The post holder will: -
Take responsibility for the recruitment, selection and retention initiatives and for the development and performance review of all nursing staff within the practice area, reporting to the Head Nurse.
• Monitor nursing workload and regularly review the structure and skill mix of nursing teams, in collaboration with the Head Nurse.
• Ensure that nursing staff are effectively deployed within the practice area.
• Promote effective communication and effective interpersonal relationships within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure collaborative and holistic working practices.
• In collaboration with the Head Nurse, ensure that resources are monitored and tailored to meet the needs of the service within financial constraints.
• Develop and implement Trust and local policies, educating and supporting staff
• Monitor and evaluate the quality of care delivered in the department and contribute to quality initiatives within the Clinical Unit and Directorate.
• Identify and undertake defined project work on behalf of the Clinical Unit, in negotiation with the Head Nurse.
• Undertake wider management responsibilities as part of a personal development plan negotiated with the Head Nurse.
• Actively participate as a clinical resource on various specialist nursing / management boards
• Deputise for the Head Nurse in her absence, taking appropriate management responsibility as required.
• Participate in a B7 on call rota, able to respond to an untoward incident such as major incident or internal disaster or provide senior nursing advice to the EAU/ED Department
• Investigate and act on untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or drug administration errors as detailed in departmental and Trust protocols and procedures, reporting to the Head Nurse / Directorate Manager.
• Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of organizational and governmental policies and agendas, identifying implications for patient care, staff management and budgetary targets.
• Facilitate implementation of the organisational zero tolerance policy and support junior staff in relation to it.
Professional Development and Education
The post holder will: -
• Continually update nursing practice in accordance with current research and evidence in nursing and specialist practice.
• Promote and practice evidence based nursing care, implementing new ideas and changes for the benefit of patient care and staff development.
• Develop and maintain a healthy clinical learning environment for all grades of staff
• Accept responsibility for own personal and professional growth and for maintaining a record of evidence of professional development experiences within a Personal Professional Portfolio.
• Discuss personal and professional development needs during an annual appraisal with Head Nurse and develop, agree and document action points in a personal development plan.
• Select and participate in the development of mentors and educational link persons, planning and implementing orientation programmes, guiding practice, assessing competence, enabling and supporting their learning.
• Act as mentor to students and colleagues, planning and implementing orientation programmes, guiding practice, assessing competence, enabling and supporting their learning.
• Attend mandatory study days and others relevant to their clinical area.
Risk Management
‘The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment.
Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.
Staff should be familiar with the Major Incident Policy and Fire Policy.
And should make themselves familiar with the ‘local response’ plan and their role within that response’.
