The Role and the Department

The Projects & Infrastructure team is responsible for construction project delivery across the Durham University estate. The team manage a large capital programme from inception to completion, delivering projects on budget, on programme and to a high standard of quality.

The Assistant Mechanical Building Services Engineer will support Mechanical Engineers and the wider team in the effective management, provision, alteration and upgrade of the University's mechanical infrastructure.

Forming necessary links between all stakeholders you will contribute to the successful delivery of a range of projects/programmes ensuring that all works are carried out to the required quality standard, adhere to best practice principles and are compliant with current statutory/safety requirements and approved codes of practice. The improvement in facilities supports academic research and enhances the student experience.

The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses.

Development Role

This is a development role, and you will develop mechanical building services engineering and construction project management skills, leadership attributes and skills. You will undertake a development programme leading to a formal Building Services Engineering qualification.

The qualification will form part of a development plan focusing on the requirements of the Grade 7 role, while also considering your individual needs. This plan will be regularly reviewed and forms the basis of the assessment to move to the Grade 7 role.

Upon successful completion of your development programme and plan, you will move into a Grade 7 Mechanical Building Services Engineer role, the job description for which can be found HERE.

If you are unable to meet the full requirements and performance levels of the Grade 7 post at the end of the development process, you may be retained in the Grade 6 role.

The Role 

Applications are invited for an Assistant Software Engineer in real-time control for Adaptive Optics (AO) systems for the ELT and other instrument projects.

Aspects of the development of the real-time control system will include: 

• Working on low latency 'hard' real time control system for both HARMONI and MOSAIC, implementing and optimising the various adaptive optics control schemes required by the instruments on the selected hardware architecture. 
• Development of the data, telemetry, command, and control interfaces to match standards required by the observatory.
• Working with a wide variety of hardware devices including high-speed cameras and deformable mirrors, and the candidate will be expected to develop and test software interfaces to these hardware devices.
• Optionally, contributing to the implementation of high-performance numerical algorithms in C/C++ and / or Python to process and update parameters for the low latency system.
• The applicant will also be expected to contribute to CfAI's ongoing research program developing new software for techniques and technologies that will enable the next generation of adaptive optics real-time control systems. These will be for use not only within astronomy but also other fields such as laser communications or microscopy where adaptive optics can be used.
• The applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to high quality publications in refereed journals as a result of participating new research areas within the field of real-time AO control.
• When working on large instrumentation projects such as HARMONI and MOSAIC the applicant will be expected to contribute to any project deliverables (such as preparing design documentation or user manuals) and adhere to project software development standards.

Your new role

Working within our Abnormal Loads team in Darlington, you’ll provide helpdesk support to National Highways stakeholders in the operation and use of the ESDAL system. You’ll assist in supporting data maintenance and upgrade tasks for data held within the ESDAL system. You’ll also provide an interface between user groups and the ESDAL technical team.

What you’ll be leading on

Register new ESDAL users with the Helpdesk and set up user accounts.
Act as first point of contact for ESDAL users and to deal with service enquiries in line with service level agreements and documented processes.
Support a team of Helpdesk Engineers and escalate any complex issues to them.
Liaise with the Technical Support Engineer / ESDAL software team where necessary to resolve user enquiries and provide user input for upgrades and improvements.
Maintain data sets within ESDAL to ensure they are kept current, using data sets provided by 3rd parties, under guidance of the Helpdesk Engineers.
Support the delivery of high levels of customer service.
Promote ESDAL to user groups to help grow user numbers.
