Role Summary:

Assist Order Engineers with improving engineering processes, evaluate design modifications, ensure code compliance and complete engineering documentation for incoming orders.  Assist with evaluation and improvement of order processing methods. Job Description Summary

We are actively recruiting candidates to participate in our 2024 On-site Summer Internship program. This program is roughly 12 weeks in length and will immerse you into the culture and operations of Lonza Portsmouth. This role will work within the Utilities Engineering department and will help execute improvements to help Lonza achieve it’s ambitions in becoming more sustainable by helping to reduce our carbon footprint, to reduce the consumption of energy and water, and/or reduce waste generation.  The ideal candidate will have a passion for driving climate action and will have some experience with controls and automation.

The internship program begins Tuesday, May 28, 2024 and ends on Friday, August 16, 2024. Potential interns must be able to commit to at least 40 hours per week throughout the duration of the summer internship.

Required Education

• Engineering degree (Chemical, Industrial, Electrical, etc.) or related coursework required
• Completion of junior year (typically 90 credits) towards a B.S. degree in a related field (electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar field)
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (out of 4) required
• Must currently be enrolled in BS or MS Academic Program
• Must be available to begin the Internship on Tuesday, May 28, 2024

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• The main purpose of this position is to support the design, development and construction of new innovative electrical and/or fiber optic connectors for the subsea market.  

• Primary responsibilities include the execution of custom subsea interconnect solutions.  These projects will range from large-scale systems to component level solutions and will consist of all fiber, all electrical, and/or hybrid combinations of both.

• Responsibilities may also include designing high voltage connectors for power applications in subsea pumps, water injection and separation systems.

• Works with reliability engineering and is a member of a team which is directly responsible for designing highly reliable connectors; electrical or fiber, with life expectancies of 30 years or greater.

• This position requires multi-tasking several projects simultaneously.  These projects will range from high voltage (3,000 volts or greater), signal & communication interconnects, and/or fiber optic transmission.

• Support all NPD initiatives and assist in developing new applications requiring appreciable ingenuity and originality.

• May interface with customers to assist in the development of various subsea products and/or components to meet their specifications.

• May interface with customers to develop business in new and existing markets.

• Generate and review supporting documentation for designs including assembly drawings, detail drawings, and assembly/test procedures utilizing personal CAD skills as well as TOG’s drafting and Documentation Departments.

• Generate and review documentation related specifically to NPD, such as test plans, qualification reports and customer requested reports.

• Provide engineering support to manufacturing and other departments, as required. 

• Works with the NPD Technical Manager or NPD Director to coordinate activities of other engineers and designers.

• Coordinate projects with account managers, TOG project managers and customer project managers.

Education and Experience:

Basic Qualifications

• Support Electrical Engineers in the design and integration of vehicle control/embedded systems development.

As an Electrical Engineering Intern at JLG, you will assist Electrical Engineers with multiple tasks and projects to gain knowledge and experience in various aspects of Engineering.

YOUR IMPACT

These duties are not meant to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

• Support Electrical Engineers in the design and integration of vehicle control/embedded systems development.

• Select parts or components for quality conscious design, i.e. weight, cost, reliability, and ease of manufacturing.

• Generate bill of materials.

• Utilize design and troubleshooting methods for heavy-duty off-highway vehicle type electrical/electronic systems, including power distribution, controls circuitry, sensors and CAN bus communication networks.

• Generate test procedures for electronic design verification.

• Perform electrical/electronic/software testing on benchtop or JLG machines independently or as part of a team.

• Design and develop wiring schematics and harnesses.

• Generate/modify drawings, specification, and bills of material.

• Utilize various tools such as multimeters/oscilloscopes, Vector CANalyzer, and proprietary programming tools for design verification and interrogation on JLG product.

• Assemble/Install prototype harnesses for testing as needed.

• Use hand tools for access to components, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS   

• Student working towards a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or related engineering degree.

• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

SUMMARY

Assist engineers and designers with design tasks to ensure the smooth flow of operations within the engineering department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Create engineering 3D models, 2D drawings, and/or electrical schematic preparation using computer aided design software.

• Create Bills of Material to support production and/or new product development.

• Create Engineering Change Notice as required to release new or revised models and drawings.

• Assist with the material selection for engineered parts.

• Conforms to Standard Operating Procedures, CAD procedures and drafting standards, and department work instructions and policies.

MINMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Student working towards an Associate’s degree for entire duration of internship.

• Ability to use and understand linear measurements, Imperial and Metric Systems, and proficient in reading a tape measure and other measuring devises.

• High level of attention to detail

• Strong verbal and written skills

• Ability to work 20 hours per week during the school year
