Due to our continued growth as we deliver the Pathway to 2030 programme of works and beyond, SSEN Transmission have an opportunity for a Senior HVDC Plant Engineer to join the team, and play a critical role in helping us grow our team and deliver our NetZero ambitions.

The Senior HVDC Plant Engineer will have experience working on the Transmission Network and an extensive knowledge of HVDC covering System Design, Main Plant Apparatus, and Insulation Co-ordination design.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

- Review or approve the technical requirements of HVDC system design and primary plant and equipment and liaise with control and protection team to ensure that secondary design is well coordinated.

- Provide HVDC and AC Substation technical support on high profile projects or technically complex issues.

- Take technical ownership of engagement with Technical Authority to manage specification deviations and to capture lessons learned and future specification improvements.

- Work within a multi-discipline team, utilising Autodesk Construction Cloud BIM environment to manage and co-ordinate designs, raise and respond to contractor RFI/TQs, clash detection, 3D model development etc.

- Attendance and chairing if required HAZID, HAZOP and HAZCON supporting the design process, co-ordinating design review meetings and identifying improvements.

What do I need?

The role would suit an experienced Primary Plant Engineer from either an OEM contractor or consultancy, looking to take the next step into a client-side organisation.

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- Ideally a degree or MSc in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, be a Chartered Engineer or working towards this or relevant experience.

- Have excellent communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate diligence and to prioritise workload.

- Demonstrable experience to technically assess and critically challenge contractor submissions.

- Familiarity with a range of technical solutions used in HVDC / AC Substations.

About our Teams

HVDC (High-voltage direct current): With new renewable energy projects in the North of Scotland needing to be connected to the National Grid and the electricity transported large distances from areas of Generation to areas of Demand, HVDC (High-voltage direct current) is the most efficient way to do this. SSEN Transmission are working on a significant number of new HVDC schemes deployed in Great Britain over the coming years. Our HVDC Engineering team is central to these projects and we are at the cutting edge of new HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology, having recently commissioned the Shetland HVDC Link, which completed the Caithness-Moray-Shetland HVDC project, the first Multi-terminal HVDC VSC scheme in the world outside of China. With significant projects to work on in the North of Scotland, including work on our Eastern Green Link projects (planned HVDC links from the East coast of Scotland to Northeast England) as well as a number of embedded links within SSEN Transmissions own Network in the North of Scotland, we are aiming to connect up to 10GW of renewable energy in the North of Scotland to the National Grid. To be considered for the role, you will be studying a degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or a mix of these disciplines).

Our opportunities are open to students who are in their 2nd year of their degree onwards and will graduate between 2026 and 2028.

Your new role
You'll play a key part in the Mechanical Design teamand will be expected to lead projects and mentor junior team members.
Your key responsibilities will include:

• Ensuring an understanding of project briefs.
• Design and specification of all Mechanical Building Services systems
• Carry out the production of detailed calculations using industry standard software tools including Hevacomp, IES, HAP, AutoCAD, Revit, Excel, etc.
• Preparing technical specifications.
• Collaborate with the BIM team to prepare models and drawings.
• Representing the organisation at meetings with clients and contractors.
• Site surveys, inspections and monitor site works.
• Report and technical note writing.
• Maintaining complete records and archives to company standards.
• Adherence to all quality, environmental & governance processes.
• Managing own workload, updating forward plan of workload regularly and working to time allocations.
• Managing elements of project delivery and an understanding of budget costings.
• Reviewing progress, including reporting any anomalies and changes of scope to the project lead.
• Assist with technical development of junior staff.

What you'll need to succeed

• Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in Building Services Engineering / Mechanical Engineering or related subjects.
• Chartered Engineer, or working towards CEng with CIBSE or IET.
• Excellent level of literacy in a range of mechanical digital tools - Hevacomp, IES, HAP, AutoCAD, Revit, etc.
• Awareness of building physics principles.
• Experience of working in a design consultancy and/or some experience of working within a contractor design environment is beneficial.
• Good knowledge of appropriate technical standards.
• Able to take charge of personal project deliverables, make decisions on developing the discipline design elements, act on own initiative and operate in a pro-active way.
• Good report writing skills, experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with clients will be useful.
• Comfortable working within time and cost budgets as agreed at project briefing meetings.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead and manage our Civil Contingencies Service (CCS), a shared service under the partnership of East Renfrewshire Council, Inverclyde Council, Renfrewshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Council.

You will provide professional advice to Chief Executives across the Partnership, Elected Members and other Chief Officers as required.

Leading your team, you will facilitate the delivery of high quality statutory civil contingencies and resilience preparations and response across and within the local authorities and health and social care partnerships. You will ensure that key personnel are suitably trained, delivering training, and exercising to employees.

You will manage and participate in, the provision of a 24/7 out of hours duty rota to respond to potential emergency situations across the full geographic area using your experience, expertise, and knowledge to advise senior colleagues.

You will work with relevant national, regional, and local agencies and partners to understand and assess the ongoing and changing nature of risks and threats across the area, liaising with relevant leads in each Council/HSCP in the Partnership to develop and recommend a strategic, tactical, and operational response to these.

You must have a degree or other relevant qualification in civil contingencies, emergency management or resilience field, significant demonstrable experience of developing, influencing and motivating the resilience focus and direction of a large organisation, both strategically and corporately and extensive practical experience in responding to major emergency incidents, with suitable evidence of successful incident management decision making, reputational awareness and co-ordination skills.

You must also have demonstrable experience of Integrated Emergency Management practice and principles and experience of leading and chairing local authority and national groups.

Experience of leading, establishing or promoting major resilience projects, requiring multi-agency and partnership collaboration and a knowledge of the Civil Contingencies Act (2004) and “Preparing Scotland” resilience agenda are essential.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an appetite for challenges who can think creatively, and problem solve in real-time. You can engage and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders and influence and inspire confidence in others while working under pressure.

It is essential you have IT skills and effective written and oral communications skills with the ability to converse with, and advise, a wide range of stakeholders.
