Job Summary:
The Engineer II is a core part of BD’s Corporate Digital Engineering (DE) team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of BD’s next generation medical products and enhance the current product portfolio. The Engineer II, under the general direction of a DE Staff Engineer and other team members, will apply engineering principals to characterize the mechanical properties of materials and test product performance.
Job Responsibilities:
Characterize the behavior of complex engineering polymers in support of BD’s medical, life science, and interventional product development applications.
Perform physical experiments utilizing standard operating procedures on Instron test machines and BlueHill Universal software.
Design custom fixtures and experimental test plans to capture the physics of diverse products and materials to meet DE simulation objectives.
Assist with validation experiments of material models calibrated for simulation.
Interact with product development and R&D teams to enhance understanding of materials and product performance by leveraging mechanical test methods.
Operate precision measurement instruments (load cells, extensometers, calipers, micrometers) with accuracy and care.
Wear proper safety equipment where required.
Maintain state-of-the-art analytical engineering competencies through training courses, seminars, and industry conferences.
Interface with external vendors for non-standard specimen molding and testing.
Manage materials database (Granta) and scripts for uploading test data.
Education and Experience:
Required BS in Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree; with 2 years of relevant experience.
Relevant experience in R&D academic or industrial environments is desired.
Hands-on experience performing mechanical testing with a universal test machine is required, experience with Instron systems is preferred.
Experience using 3D CAD solid modeling software is required, experience with SolidWorks is preferred.
Manual dexterity to handle delicate test specimens and operate sensitive laboratory instruments with precision and accuracy is required.
Familiarity with the following software tools is preferred: Instron BlueHill, Matlab, Kornucopia, Python, MCalibration and Minitab.
Familiarity with finite element modeling and constitutive material model calibration is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
Proven ability to make individual contributions while collaboratively functioning as part of a larger team.
Ability to plan and conduct scientific experiments and effectively analyze, interpret, report and present results to technical and non-technical professionals to inform decision making.
Effective written and verbal communication with management, project teams, and multifunctional personnel on a timely basis.
Desire and ability to learn and apply new skillsets to solve challenging engineering problems.
Manage assignments in accordance with project prioritization.
Thorough, accurate, and timely completion of assigned responsibilities.
Work independently to identify actions needed to complete assignments and demonstrate strong drive for results.
Adherence to all BD policies and procedures as well as any laws where applicable.
