Our Overhead Transmission business seeks a Transmission Design Engineer with PLS-CADD experience to join its team in Irving, TX (remote candidates are welcome to apply). Come join us in delivering projects that make a difference.

The successful candidate will serve as a Lead Engineer on electric transmission design projects for high-voltage (HV) and extra high-voltage (EHV) overhead utility systems. He/she will apply NESC, NEC, ASCE and other applicable standards in the engineering and design of electrical overhead, voltage conversion projects, new capacity projects and infrastructure replacement projects. Additionally, he/she will assist the team as well as independently perform engineering analyses, prepare bidding documents, plans and specifications; as well as prepare material procurement and construction documents, and work with project planning, environmental, permitting, and construction management.

We will consider qualified candidates to work fully remote (must reside in the U.S. only).  This position offers the successful candidate to develop an engineering team with direct report responsibilities. The candidate will also be responsible for managing client relations, proposal development, scope creation, and project management.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and minimum of four (4) years of prior relevant experience in the design of electric utility transmission systems
• Experience in reviewing full transmission line designs including PLS-CADD models, foundations, material, plan and profiles, and construction packages
• Knowledge of NESC, ACI, AISC, and ASCE code requirements; construction specifications; material procurement process; project schedules; and construction work packages.
• Develop project scopes, budgets, and proposals
• Ability to work effectively in team environment but also able to work independently
• Proven ability to communicate with clients and project teams
• Must have leadership experience and supervising others (required for Senior and SME Level)
• Work in client office is a possibility and/or periodic travel may be required
• Program Expertise:

The Challenge

Our Overhead Transmission business is in search of a Transmission Design Engineer with PLS-CADD experience to join its team in Irving, TX (remote candidates welcome).

In this role, you will serve as an Engineer on electric transmission line design projects for high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) overhead and underground systems for some of the largest utilities in the country. You will apply NESC, ASCE, ACI, and other applicable standards in the engineering and design of electrical overhead and underground systems, voltage conversion projects, new capacity projects, and infrastructure replacement projects. Additionally, performing engineering analyses, preparing bidding documents, draft plans, and specifications, as well as preparing material procurement and construction documents. This will involve working with a multi-person Leidos team and interfacing with clients, project planning, environmental, permitting, and construction management personnel. *Work Location: Irving (Dallas), TX (with potential remote opportunities).

What Sets You Apart:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering with two (2) + years of relevant experience in the design of electric utility transmission systems
• Experience using PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE.
• Work effectively in team environment; can also work independently.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with clients and project teams.

He/she will apply NESC, NEC, ASCE and other applicable standards in the engineering and design of electrical overhead, voltage conversion projects, new capacity projects and infrastructure replacement projects. Additionally, he/she will assist the team as well as independently perform engineering analyses, prepare bidding documents, plans and specifications; as well as prepare material procurement and construction documents, and work with project planning, environmental, permitting, and construction management.

To be considered for these positions, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

• For Mid-level: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and minimum of four (4) years of prior relevant experience in the design of electric utility transmission systems
• For Senior level: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and minimum of eight (8) years of prior relevant experience in the design of electric utility transmission systems, P.E. license required, to serve as responsible engineer in charge of design of projects
• For SME level: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and minimum of twelve (12) + years of prior relevant experience in the design of electric utility transmission systems, P.E. license required, to serve as responsible engineer in charge of design of projects

 All levels require:

• Professional Engineering License – any state (required for Senior and SME Level) or the ability to take P.E. exam after reasonable preparation
• Ability to develop staff through mentoring
• Experience in reviewing full transmission line designs including PLS-CADD models, foundations, material, plan and profiles, and construction packages
• Knowledge of NESC, ACI, AISC, and ASCE code requirements; construction specifications; material procurement process; project schedules; and construction work packages.

Your Main Objective:

• Develop new, or modify existing: 

• Electrical layout/plan of substation equipment and structures

• Substation foundation layout/plan drawings

• Section/elevation views from layout/plan drawings

• Conduit layout/plan drawings

• Substation grounding layout/plan drawings

• Control building layout/plan and section/elevation drawings

• Develop a complete bill of materials for all required electrical equipment and materials.

• Review and comment on equipment drawings received from vendors and manufacturers.

• Work with other disciplines (e.g., Civil Engineers) as necessary to complete assigned work.

• Assist the project team with developing processes and procedures to increase team efficiency.

• Perform basic engineering calculations to support engineering design

• Apply relevant client, national, and state standards to each assignment as needed.

What Sets You Apart: 

• Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.

• Level 1: 2-4 years of direct substation physical and electrical design experience using CAD software on electric utility industry projects.

• Level 2: 4-8 years of direct substation physical and electrical design experience using CAD software on electric utility industry projects.

• A combination of education and a demonstrated related experience may be considered in lieu of education and experience requirements.

• Solid comprehension and application of design software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD.

• Proficient with Windows-based software such as Word and Excel, which are frequently used to develop project deliverables.

• Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

• Advanced ability to utilize 2D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

• Ability to work in a team environment with others including, but not limited to, Project Managers, Engineers, Designers, and drafters in multi-discipline groups.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Strong attention to detail and work product quality.
