Our English Department

Our English department is a friendly and supportive team. We have seven teachers, a specialist literacy teaching assistant and a one-to-one tutor. The department is very stable and several members of the team have been in post since 2017 when the school became part of Outwood Grange Academies Trust. We have a combination of experienced and more recently-qualified staff and ECTs are supported by experienced mentors. The department is a great place to start your career as a teacher as well as somewhere where more experienced staff can thrive.

Teaching takes place in the department’s eight classrooms and each member of the department has their own room. Every classroom has a visualiser and these are used extensively by the team. There is a substantial departmental office and a very large and well-stocked library with an experienced and enthusiastic full-time librarian.

The department has created a challenging and exciting KS3 curriculum with reading at its heart. To build enthusiasm for English study at A level, the department has included a ‘love of the subject’ strand to their teaching which includes KS3 units on language change and the history of English, Romantic poetry, and Political and Social Protest writing. There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. The specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers. The team is very proud of the statement made in the most recent inspection report (June 2022), “There is an exceptionally strong reading culture evident across the school.”

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise. You will join a national study team being established across the UK and will play a key role managing the study at NHS sites in England. The post holder will additionally be responsible for the day-to-day management of other research projects, studies and trials at the Trust as required. We are delighted to offer a Neuromodulation Research Fellowship at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This 1-year industry funded post is looking to further the development of expertise in, and a strong evidence base for, neuromodulation.



The ideal applicant must hold a UK CCT in Anaesthesia and pain medicine or equivalent.The successful candidate will gain the exposure, experience, and confidence to become an independent neuromodulator. The candidate will learn how a successful service with low explant rates and high patient satisfaction is run. Further, this role will give the candidate dedicated time to undertake, publish and present neuromodulation research.

The fellowship will have protected time for high quality supervised research that will align with both local and industry research priorities. Within the post, they will be expected to engage and deliver NIHR portfolio studies related to pain and neuromodulation. However, they will also be required to develop and deliver investigator initiated, industry funded studies that align with the strategic direction of both the funder and the neuromodulation service. This position presently joint funded by Saluda medical, Nevro & Mainstay medical will help fill the current void in well designed and conducted randomised controlled trials in this sphere. This aligns with the recent publications in major journals (JAMA) and discussion at international meetings (INS) calling for this direction. York and Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust has a strong history in delivering randomised controlled trials (both commercial & non-commercial) in the sphere of Anaesthesia, Pain, Perioperative medicine, and Intensive Care and has several active trials ongoing. We successfully deliver many NIHR portfolio trials across our trust, a number of which have been developed and sponsored by York and Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful applicant will be supported by both the University of York academically & Dr Armstrong and Dr Fitzmaurice clinically, & will be encouraged to attend & present their research regularly at major national & international meetings including NSUKI, BPS, INS, NANS and WIP

DRIVING INSTRUCTOR COURSES
Your full driving instructor course is between 3 to 18 months and based upon your learning pace and personal commitments. With a structured combination of theory-based learning, one-to-one theory-based training and on-the-road practical sessions, you’ll be fully versed and ready to go.
DRIVING INSTRUCTOR TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
• You must be over 22
• Live in North Yorkshire or surrounding areas
• Have held a full driving licence for at least 3.5 years (and have not been disqualified)
• Commit to at least five hours a week to train as a driving instructor
• Must be able to read a number plate from 27.5m
• Have an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS check - £8.22)
• Have patience & understanding; some pupils learn faster than others
• Excellent communication skills
• Points holders be aware, the Driving Standards Agency may reject your application

You do need to have a car to practice your driving in.

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic and who are willing to help support, develop and shape the team. The Intensive Support Team are based in York at Systems House. There will be a requirement to travel across the North Yorkshire area based on service user need. We operate on 12-hour shift pattern covering 7 days a week.We are dedicated to the development of our staff and therefore offer training opportunities as part of the role.
