RESPONSIBILITIES IN MEDICAL EDUCATION Responsibilities in undergraduate medical education in the following three areas: 1. This role will include weekly designated bedside teaching as well as some small group tutorials. How this is to be organised is at the discretion of the Undergraduate Tutor to meet the minimum standards for clinical placements set by the University of Manchester, Buckingham Medical School and other HEIs. 2. Clinical Skills and Simulation Teaching Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a well-equipped clinical skills department and a dedicated Clinical Skills Tutor. There will be an opportunity to assist in teaching clinical skills to the undergraduate students. This will comprise a small part of the educational commitment. 3. There will be an opportunity to teach and train final-year students, especially the ones placed on the respective departments where the appointee is attached for the clinical part of the job, as well as involvement in their cased based discussion sessions where appropriate. Additional opportunities include assisting with the running of the hospitals So You Want to be a Doctor? session for local 6th form students interested in a career in medicine; helping with running and planning simulation training and teaching sessions for nursing students and junior doctors; Similar opportunities, and others, will be available for the successful candidate should they wish to be involved. It would also be expected that the appointee undertakes a formal, distance-learning module-based course in medical education such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education offered by many local universities. The undergraduate department will provide support and fund such a qualification. A generous amount of study leave will be available for this and other sessions relevant to the post such as those offered via the University of Manchester and other HEIs for training e.g OSCE examiner. Timetables will include four clinical sessions, four educational sessions and two flexible sessions for personal development (PG Cert).* The successful candidate will also offer service provision one of the clinical divisions, a preference for the clinical division can be discussed. Service Provision Clinical placements will be at the level of an ST1 trainee utilising Foundation competencies. *There may be some occasions where the successful candidate may need to work on the on-call rota and/or weekends, however, this should not affect any of the educational sessions. RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE SURGERY AND CANCER DIVISION The post will give excellent exposure to a range of emergency and elective surgery. It will include a mixture of ward work and theatre. The surgical work will fit around the educational work commitments, and will vary from week to week depending on the needs of the general surgery department. The post-holder will be expected to attend operating theatre to assist consultants with major surgery, and there will be an opportunity to develop surgical skills. The post-holder will also work on the emergency surgery ward, helping to admit and assess patients with general surgical problems. There may also be a need to visit other surgical wards to review general surgical patients. There will be opportunities to work in general surgical and breast clinics. RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE MEDICINE AND EMERGENCY CARE DIVISION The post will give excellent exposure to General Internal Medicine with opportunities to work in the Acute Admissions Unit, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Gastroenterology or Diabetes & Endocrinology at a IMT1 level. Placement will depend on the appointee's aspirations, clinical need in the Medicine and Emergency Care Division and also on placement of medical students. There will be opportunities to rotate into two or three departments over the year if that is considered appropriate.The nature of work will vary but will mostly comprise working on the ward alongside the medical team of trainee doctors under the clinical supervision of a Consultant. This will include attending Consultant and Registrar led ward rounds, conducting own ward rounds, ward work, supervision and training of junior trainees and medical students on the ward and working as a member of a wider multidisciplinary team. There may also be opportunities to take on optional out-of-hours on call work in medicine (e.g. late shifts) on an ad hoc basis, provided it does not have an adverse impact upon the routine 9 to 5 clinical and educational role. RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE WOMEN'S & CHILDREN'S DIVISION The post will give excellent exposure to the obstetric and gynaecology or paediatric departments. The departments are busy and offer fantastic opportunities to a successful candidate in developing their clinical and communication skills. The successful candidate would build on their obstetric and gynaecology or paediatric portfolio.
