About the Role:

You will consolidate administrative, personal assistant and programme support. As a ML Platform Engineer on the Central Software (CSW) team, you will play an active role in implementing the tools, infrastructure, and pipelines that unify how our product and research teams get stuff done. Do you seek a part-time role helping to guide undergraduates into health careers?  The Health: Science, Society and Policy (HSSP) program at Brandeis University seeks to hire a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to manage and oversee the internship experience and teach the associated course for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.  These undergraduate internships span the spectrum of health functions, including:

• biomedical and health-services research in labs or biopharmaceutical companies;
• clinical support positions in hospitals, clinics, dental offices, physical therapy centers, nursing homes, or ambulance companies;
• public health functions in community health centers or public health agencies;
• health administration, health policy, and consulting jobs;
• health advocacy positions in non-profits and patient groups, including those that focus on how social determinants like hunger, housing, neighborhoods and environment affect health.

Candidates for the position should have familiarity with many of these fields, how they connect to each other, and their role in the delivery of health to patients and populations.  The internship instructor is not required to find internships for students, but the department maintains a database of past assignments if necessary. HSSP 89a Internship and Analysis

This course for declared HSSP majors combines: 1) a supervised health-related internship, and 2) a weekly, classroom-based discussion during the Internship Seminar. The internship placement must be clearly health-related and take place within a healthcare organization whose work involves science (e.g., natural sciences and medicine), society (e.g., the social sciences and public health), and/or policy (e.g., law, politics, economics, and organizations). The internship must be arranged in consultation with and approved in writing by the HSSP Internship Instructor BEFORE the internship begins. Students are required to attend a weekly 1.5 hour sections, keep a journal, write short papers, and prepare presentations - all of which requires reflection on and systematic analysis of the internship experience. Usually offered every semester.

The course is taught in person, seminar style for 30-35 HSSP students in the fall and 15-20 students in the spring. The class meets on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:45-2:05pm in the fall, but there is flexibility in scheduling for future semesters.  The course is designed to connect the students’ front-line experience with long-term career pathways, as well as discuss some of the larger issues & debates in health care. Prior syllabi will be made available as a background/foundation.  The salary is $16,640 for both semesters. This appointment is to a position that is in a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 509.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) to carry out cutting edge genomics research on malaria vector mosquitoes to be based in Lawniczak Group at the Wellcome Sanger Institute for 3 years fixed term.

About the Role:

Four major malaria mosquito vector species now have over 20,000 short read genomes from samples collected across the African continent. These data have revealed both extraordinary genetic connectedness between geographically distant populations and even species, but they have also revealed that some populations remain genetically distinct. We observe interesting regions of the genome that likely have structural variation, but short reads aligned to a single reference genome are insufficient to understand these genomic regions. We are now able to routinely generate long read data from single individual mosquitoes.

This project will leverage on the knowledge we already have regarding geographical population structure in An. gambiae, An. coluzzii, An. arabiensis, and An. funestus to study long read genomes from individuals from each species from across their range. We anticipate 100-200 long read genomes per species to gain a pangenome understanding of genomic patterns and differentiation in these important species. There will also be opportunities to return to the short read data that exists for 1000s of indivdiuals and explore this using a graph genome that you will create.

We have other projects in the lab focused on secondary malaria vectors and other important fly species (e.g. pollinators) and there will be multiple opportunities to collaborate on projects. Currently, the pangenomes project is focused on geographic spatial variation in Africa, but there may be opportunities to add in a temporal component to explore how variation changes over time, especially in response to malaria control interventions.

You will be responsible for leading the pangenome analyses for all four species and shaping additional data generation plans based on findings. You will also play an important role in developing digestible and informative data visualisation for researchers and colleagues (e.g. National Malaria Control Programs).

The role is primarily an analytical and computational role, though there may be some wet lab work required on occasion. For example, we are also pursuing the potential to capture full-length transcriptomes for each specimen we generate long read data from.

About You:
You will have a strong interest in genomes and malaria and in the application of DNA to infectious disease monitoring and elimination. You will be creative and dedicated to making maximal use of the samples and the resulting data to benefit malaria vector research while carrying out interesting evolutionary genetics research.
