Senior Research Technician

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced technician to cover a period of maternity leave for 12 months, predominantly to support our Palaeoclimate, Image and Geochemistry research laboratories.

You will be responsible for:
the operational management of these research lab areas- carrying out lab inductions, training staff and students in technical and clean lab procedures, maintaining stock levels, servicing, and operating analytical equipment; overseeing lab safety, assessing risk, and encouraging sustainable lab practices.
carrying out analytical work to support academic researchers, e.g. conducting palaeoclimate multi-proxy analysis using light microscopy (preparing ocean sediment samples for stable isotope and trace metal analysis), Coulter Counter (for grain size analysis) and maintaining data and archive records.
Experience in working in a research laboratory is essential.

The successful candidate will also work as part of a friendly and supportive team of technicians, supporting the wider Schools Research Facilities, carrying out PAT testing, Legionella control and safety inspections. We will provide any relevant training and support that you may require.

The Role and the Department     

A laboratory technician post (Grade 6) is available for 2 years (full time, but with the option for flexible working hours) in the laboratory of Professor Keith Lindsey, Department of Biosciences, Durham University to work on a multidisciplinary industrial biotechnology and bioengineering project on environmental processing and recovery of metals.

The world in 2040 is expected to need 4 times as many critical minerals/metals for clean energy technologies as it does today. To achieve this goal, it is clear that environmental processing and recovery of minerals and metals will play a critical strategic role not only in sustainable resource management but also in waste reduction, pollution prevention, and the transition towards a more circular and environmentally conscious economy. This project unites specialists from across the UK who possess knowledge in essential technologies related to bio-extraction and bio-recovery of metals. We will collaborate to establish an open knowledge Hub aimed at enhancing ongoing projects of engineered organisms at various technology readiness levels that tackle important environmental issues associated with mineral extraction, urban mining, industrial waste, and legacy nuclear waste. The Engineering Biology Hub aims to provide a powerful suite of engineering biology tools and approaches that represent sustainable and efficient solutions to address many of the environmental challenges concerning metal waste and metal-scarcity.

The technician will support this project through the functional characterization of bacterially biorecovered copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Bio-synthesised CuNPs represent a potential application of biorecovery, as part of a circular economy approach to reduce the need for newly extracted copper and chemical processes for NP synthesis. We will 1) test the ability of biosynthesised CuNPs (using Shewanella oneidensis) to replicate the effects of chemically synthesised CuNPs on plant root growth (a bioassay for CuNP functionality), and 2) use CuNPs from engineered S. oneidensis, optimised for NP production. This £12 M project, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, links with a second large project with the water industry, to develop methodologies to prevent tree root ingress into built structures, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with team members both within Durham and also in other participating UK Universities.

The appointee will work closely with haemato-oncology colleagues in the Early Phase Clinical Trials Team and the Bone Marrow Transplant Team (BMT), solid cancer colleagues at Cardiff and Vale UHB (C&V UHB) and Velindre University NHS Trust, and scientists within the immunology and translational haematology laboratories at Cardiff University. The appointee will also have the opportunity to play an active role within several cancer infrastructures at Cardiff University, including the recently re-funded Cardiff Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) and the Cardiff Cancer Research Hub (CCRH), a facility for clinical and translational cancer research based at the University Hospital of Wales, developed in partnership by Cardiff University with its NHS partners, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board and Velindre University NHS Trust. Main Duties and Responsibilities Research You will be expected to lead and develop internationally excellent research activity in Clinical Cancer Genomics within the overall agreed research strategies of the Division of Cancer and Genetics, School of Medicine, College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, and University To generate and pursue independent and original clinical trial ideas through interactions with pre-clinical scientists in Cardiff, Wales and through participation in the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC), Wales Cancer Research Centre (WCRC), Velindre Cancer Centre, Genomic Partnership Wales (GPW), Wales Gene Park (WGP) and All-Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective publications, presentations at national/international meetings and conferences, and research seminars To prepare external funding applications as well as research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate, and publish results arising from it in peer-reviewed international academic journals To contribute through new research and research-funding initiatives to the School of Medicines Research Excellence Framework strategy, through publication of 3* and 4* outputs, and potential impact To become familiar with trial protocols and working practice within Velindre Cancer Centre (VCC), participate in oncology patient management in early phase clinical trials, promote unifying working practice in clinical trial delivery between VCC trials unit and UHW and perform duties at both sites To act as supervisor/co-supervisor for postgraduate research (PGR) students including masters and doctoral students, working as part of an approved training programme To contribute to PGR progress monitoring as chair or member of review panels Teaching Demonstrate academic leadership, both in terms of organisation and delivery, of clinical and research education, including in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training programmes To contribute to undergraduate medical teaching in the School of Medicine as set out by the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences (BLS) and the forthcoming School of Medicine Teaching Charter (the precise level will be commensurate with the FTE appointment and concurrent Academic/Leadership duties) To undertake work associated with examinations, such as setting and marking assessments and providing student feedback To provide specialist lectures for the undergraduate medical curriculum To lecture and act as project supervisor for BSc Intercalated students To act as project supervisor for Student Selected Component (SSC) projects To act as a Personal Tutor and provide academic advice and pastoral support to students Clinical To hold and maintain a Licence to Practise with the General Medical Council To hold an honorary consultant contract with the relevant NHS Trust(s) and Health Boards To provide Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities, in line with the provisions of the amended Consultant Contract for Wales To provide a consultant-led metastatic breast cancer service at Velindre Cancer Centre, working with other multidisciplinary colleagues, as agreed with the Clinical Director of Velindre Cancer Centre, via the Job Planning process. To provide, with multidisciplinary colleagues, a cancer genetics service to patients and families from South East Wales, agreed with the Clinical Director of the AWMGS, via the job planning process To lead on developments in Breast Cancer genomics/genetics and tumour biology at Velindre Cancer Centre and contribute to horizon scanning and service development in this area. The post-holder will not be required to participate in the consultant acute oncology on-call rota but would review any team inpatients as necessary Provide virtual advice and to liaise with other health care providers, hospitals and primary care teams, as required To undertake the professional supervision and management of junior staff - in certain circumstances, the post-holder may be named as the clinical supervisor for junior staff To participate actively in clinical audit, in liaison with other colleagues and in line with the NHS Trust policy on the implementation of clinical governance To participate actively in Continuing Professional Development, in line with guidance from the Royal College of Physicians and in agreement with the Chief Executive of the relevant NHS Trust(s) Other To engage effectively with industrial, commercial, and public sector organisations, charities, professional institutions, and other academic institutions, regionally and nationally to raise awareness of Cardiff Universitys and AWMGSs profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities - these activities are expected to contribute to AWMGS and the enhancement of its regional and national profile To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to, and which will enhance performance To support and promote the Genomic Research Strategy in Wales, Wales Cancer Research Strategy and the Cardiff University Strategy To engage with Genomic Partnership Wales and its stakeholders, including patient and public representatives and patients to develop and promote genomic research - the role will specifically require engagement with clinicians from cancer centres across Wales, Centre for Trials Research and scientists within Cardiff University To participate in School of Medicine administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role The post holder will also be expected to: Maintain scientific competency by attending relevant lectures, courses, seminars and conferences Contribute to the effective management of the Division, School and Research Theme at College, within the University Provide leadership that ensures Tripartite Collaboration between Cardiff and Vale; Cardiff University and Velindre Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate Perform other academic duties, on an occasional basis, and by agreement, which are not included above, but which are consistent with the role The post holder will be required to actively participate in, and comply fully with, the clinical academic/NHS Joint Appraisal Process and the requirements for consultant revalidation. The required arrangements are in place, as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians, to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports clinical academic staff going through the revalidation process.
