This is a highly responsible role, and the successful applicant will be part of a team that is dedicated to improving the lives of cancer patients in the Thames Valley and more broadly across the UK. The post holder will work between the Haematology Trials Unit, Late Phase Oncology Trial Unit, both based at the Churchill Hospital, and the OUH Research and Development Team. The two trial units conduct a wide spectrum of Phase I to Phase III clinical trials in cancer with the aim of transforming care of cancer patients. The post holder will be responsible to manage all the income generated from clinical trials is captured, invoiced and received and that expenditure (principally on staff costs) is monitored by Haematology trial units. The post holder will work closely with the R&D Service Manager , the data teams in both trial units, OUH R&D finance teams and the medical and nursing management of both trial units. Ensuring the financial sustainability of both trial units is critical to their success.

This job description outlines the core requirements expected of a Band 5 Business Support & Performance Officer. As such the list below is not exhaustive. Specific requirements related to any specialist area of practice will be outlined with the prospective post holder and included as an addition to these generic descriptors as role specific prior to employment.
1. On a weekly basis working with the trial unit data teams to record money to be billed on each clinical trial conducted by both units, to sponsors of clinical trials. This constitutes the income of each unit.
2. Contacting trial sponsors to make sure invoices are issued promptly.
3. Checking invoices from trial sponsors to correct any irregularities in invoiced issued by trial sponsors and working with trial sponsors to resolve any queries.
4. Providing OUH Finance correct invoices for OUH finance to bill.
5. Checking with OUH Trial Finance that invoices have been paid.
6. On a monthly basis reviewing the expenditure of each unit. This will mainly consist of staff costs.
7. Provide monthly Excel spreadsheet reports of income and expenditure and providing forward yearly forecasts, to the leadership of each trial unit.
8. Provide budgets for new staff posts as they are created.
9. Liaising closely with various external and internal stakeholders e.g. researchers, NHS Departments, Commercial Companies on all issues affecting the trials portfolio as required.

Patient Care
• Assist all patients with their personal care needs, empowering patients or families/carers and actively encouraging participation. • Help patients, families/carers and visitors orientate themselves to their surroundings when admitted to the ward/department providing written and verbal information as required.

It includes consultants broadly covering all major specialities in haematology with variable levels of site specialisation. It provides comprehensive treatment of all haematological malignancies (including allogeneic bone marrow transplantation) and non-malignant haematological conditions, including coagulation disorders. The service is located in the Haematology and Cancer Centre, with 25 inpatient beds, comprehensive outpatient, ambulatory care, day care facilities, onsite 24/7 triage/acute access service, and dedicated research beds. There is an established regional Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS).

Oxford Translational Myeloma Centre (OTMC)

The OTMC is a patient-focused research organisation dedicated to improving the lives of patients with Myeloma by developing personalised treatment approaches and curative strategies, and by supporting the development of new therapies whilst training the next generation of investigators. Realising the strengths and depth in pre-clinical and clinical myeloma research within Oxford University, the mission of this newly launched centre is to undertake internationally competitive research into the processes underlying multiple myeloma and related plasma cell diseases.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical/Professional
• Review patients in triage, ward, day unit and myeloma clinic and facilitate subsequent management of their care in conjunction with the haematology team. Order appropriate investigations, interpret results, form a list of differential diagnoses, and recommend treatment accordingly.
• Identify and consent patients for myeloma biobanking, working in conjunction with senior colleagues.
• Perform pertinent assessments for all patients along with the multidisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes
• Perform diagnostic procedures subject to training and experience. These include (but not exclusively) bone marrow aspirates/trephines and venepuncture.
• Ensure documentation is legible and clear
• Ensure all pathway documentation is completed according to the Trust Guidelines
• Consolidate, develop and maintain specialist medical knowledge. Keep up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice.
• Communicate the outcome of clinical encounters to GPs and other health professionals in a timely fashion.
• Foster good relationship by working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team
• Present/participate in weekly myeloma multi-disciplinary meeting, which may involve record keeping.

Organisational
• Complete Trust Statutory and Mandatory training as required
• Ensure annual appraisal is completed and agreed by the line manager at least once a year , with a personal development review meeting where progress made over the previous 6 months is discussed. Use the Trust values based appraisal process.
• Report all actual and potential clinical incidents involved in accordance with the Trust’s reporting procedures for untoward events using the electronic reporting system (ULYESSES). Escalating issues or concerns immediately to the responsible consultant or senior nurse.
• Attend the monthly departmental Clinical Governance meeting which includes mortality and morbidity review
• To take a proactive approach in the prevention and management of complaints and when they occur, escalate and support investigation in accordance with the OUH NHS Foundation Trust complaints policies
• To ensure effective and up to date IT skills are maintained in order to be able to fully use Trust IT systems.

Education and Research
• Maintain knowledge and proficiency in medical practices through continuing education, staff meetings, and workshops.
• Participate/Lead Quality improvement/ Research project within the department
• Assist in the development and mentoring of the UK Physician Associates as the profession progresses. Assist in the educational development of Physician Associate students through student shadowing and/or teaching.
• OUH/Clinical Haematology will encourage applicants to attend teaching sessions, perform audits and promote the PA profession within the department and trust
• OUH has a strong history of furthering education and knowledge. As part of the trust, you will be expected to complete your 25 hours of Type 1 CPD training each year, as specified by the Faculty of Physician Associates.
• We encourage participation in the National Physician Associate conference as well as 'other relevant conferences' (if deemed appropriate based on agreement with your supervisor).

Research experience in muscular diseases and/or genetic disorders will be welcome and be supporting evidence of a sub-specialist interest in this field. Clinical Governance The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. Personal and Professional Development The post-holder will be required to keep him-/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice, and will have to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.
