AHUK offers considerable experience in helicopter sales, bespoke completions, maintenance and spares support. Its in-house engineering capabilities include design, customisation, installation, flight-testing and certification, as well as technical support, maintenance, training and the supply of spares for civil and military applications.
AHUK is the MoD’s chosen provider of helicopters and maintenance for its Defence Helicopter Flying School (referred to as MFTS) located in RAF Shawbury (Shropshire) and RAF Valley (Anglesey).
Description/Overall purpose of the Job
We are seeking two Apprentice Design Engineers to provide assistance on mechanical design solutions on a wide range of Airbus helicopters for integration of mission equipment ranging from external loads to internal cabin configuration. In this junior role you will develop skills in order to progress to become a Mechanical Design Engineer.
As part of the Apprenticeship you will study and work towards a Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths (If required), Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Technical Knowledge), Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) and Level 3 Engineering Technician Apprenticeship. You will attend college 1 day per week during term time to complete this, and we will support you and allow you time to focus on the qualification at other times as and when required. The college learning will be based at one of the Abingdon & Witney based colleges.
Main responsibilities
Developing cost effective design solutions to technical and commercial requirements placed on the design office
Undertaking mechanical design i.a.w. the design office procedures as directed by the Chief Mechanical Design Engineer or his Deputy
To develop a set of skills to allow progression to Mechanical design Engineer role with support from team members
Keeping up to date with new technological advances
Gaining an understanding or certification requirements for Mechanical designs
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
Knowledge of, and some previous experience of using a CAD system e.g. AutoCAD
Computer literate in Google Suite (G-Mail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Google docs etc.)
Desirable
A desire to work in the Aviation Industry and in a design office
Computer literate in MS Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel
Education, Qualifications or Training
Essential
KPI’s
Effective communicator within the Design Office mechanical team and other internal departments
Efficient use of a CAD system e.g. AutoCAD and Microsoft Office tools, although training will be provided as necessary.
Ability to work on own initiative, requesting guidance and support when required.
Ability to grasp and embrace new design concepts quickly
Developing cost effective design solutions to technical and commercial requirements placed on the design office
Support department objectives
Developing technical knowledge and design skills
