Principal Highways Design Engineer (Civil Engineering)

GiPro is delighted to be working exclusively with one of the most recognised engineering consultancy in the UK who are experts within the Transport Planning and Highways Design space. Due to their rapid growth, they are now on the lookout for an experienced Principal Highways Design Engineer. This role is based at their new state-of-the-art Birmingham office and you'd have the opportunity to play a key part in the development of the office and building your dream team - the opportunities are endless.

Please note that this is a role within Civil Engineering.

The role:

• Ensure designs are delivered within programme and within the budget provided;
• Manage resource allocations to ensure team members are fully utilised on the highest priority tasks;
• Prepare and manage project budgets, ensuring cost control and financial accountability, and monitor and track project expenditures against said budget;
• Act as the primary point of contact for clients, stakeholders, and other project partners;
• Manage stakeholder expectations and ensure effective communication throughout the project lifecycle;
• Ensure that all designs are prepared in accordance with MCHW, DMRB and/or local design guidance, and that the requirements of all relevant Authorities and Statutory bodies are incorporated into designs, as appropriate;
• Undertake and check / authorise design information and reports providing effective feedback;
• Work with Milestone's Senior Management Team to assist with projects from other offices and disciplines;
• Encourage innovation and continuous improvement within the team and displaying sound independent judgement, and;
• Comply with relevant Health & Safety legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations and adopting a pro-active risk management / mitigation approach.

About you:

• Pro-active management skills with confidence to manage teams in accordance with a growing and varied workload
• Highways and drainage experience, using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microdrainage.
• Ideally have a good understanding of Flood Risk Assessments and various section agreements including S278, S38, S104 and S106.
• Great resource management skills ensuring projects are resourced with the most effective staff
• Strong technical skills and experience in a range of highway design environments
• Proven project management of highway projects and delivery to programme and budget
• Display sound independent judgment
• Experience with developing, mentoring and supervision of Highway Design staff
• Robust working knowledge of Highways Technical documents within the DMRB

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer to join our Developments team in the Midlands as part of our Operations Directorate.

This role will require providing an engineering opinion at planning application stage, with more thorough assessment/input being required following planning approval; whereby Technical Approval of the associated mitigation works will be required. Technical Approval follows a two part process.

You will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have a full clean driving licence to be considered for this position

What you'll be leading on

• Technical Approval Part 1 - To confidently articulate with key stakeholders verbally whilst providing advice and direction to help shape the design from the technical compliance, buildability, durability and maintainability perspectives; but with due cognisance of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015;
• Technical Approval Part 2 - Produce meticulous, unambiguous written technical commentary against finalised detailed design proposals using the DMRB and MCHW, along with Statutory Instruments, advisory sources and other documentation as appropriate. Consideration again to be given to the buildability, maintainability and durability of permanent works proposals;
• Liaison with Operations "Engineering Team Managers" to discuss proposals from both the technical compliance and future maintenance perspectives and recording the opinions obtained;
• Liaison with other National Highways Directorates as and when required i.e. Safety Engineering and Standards;
• Developing and maintaining professional relationships with project promoters and their project team, whilst also managing expectations;
• Meeting with project promoters and/or project team members to discuss matters arising from the overall assessment process;

To be successful

• Higher Degree or Degree in Civil Engineering or other appropriate qualification associated with Highway Design;
• Professionally qualified to Chartered or Incorporated status with ICE or equivalent, or actively working towards;
• A demonstrable working knowledge of the current DMRB, the MCHW, CHE Memos, Statutory Instruments, British Standards, and the like;
• Experienced in the design and/or assessment of those individual elements which collectively form the Strategic Road Network;
• Considerable experience of working within a Civil Engineering and/or Highway Design environment..

Commitment to safeguarding

Our role in school is clearly defined by statutory Department for Education (DfE) guidance - Keeping Children Safe in Education. Our duties form an important part of the wider safeguarding system for children and mean that we will always consider what is in the best interests of the child. The UKHSA Data Design & Architecture (DD&A) team is responsible for supporting data architecture and data solutions across the organisation. We are a small team of solution architects, data architects, and data modellers. We also work closely with other parts of the organisation who also are involved in development and maintenance of infrastructure and software, including Programme Teams, Engineering & Enablement, Surveillance Systems, Data Services & Quality, Genomics, Enterprise Architecture and the Development and Operations team. The DD&A team supervises and actively develops solutions and data architecture which meet both our own and wider strategies and design principles/blueprints. We also work on solution migration, consolidation, transformation, improvement, stabilisation, and decommissioning. We are seeking solution architects with AWS/Azure experience.
