Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type-31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates, the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

The role
As a Principal Naval Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is a highly prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.
Day to day:
- You will be responsible for developing and leading the delivery of technical solutions across outfitting, from concept design studies, new build bid submissions to final vessel acceptance. You are required to be lead the development of not only the technical solutions but also the individuals and teams they work in.
- You will lead design teams throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design. Support the development of the team members to support both their effective working, and their development. You will develop innovative design solutions and processes as well as produce substantiation reports for tasks undertaken including stability assessment, concept designs etc.
- You will produce technical reports and other documentation while leading the maintenance and improvement in quantity standards of outputs.
- In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.

Essential experience of the Principal Naval Architect:
Experience in the naval/marine industry and experience of using a variety of naval architecture packages and extensive knowledge of design packages e.g., ship stability, 2D & 3D CAD.
Qualifications for the Principal Naval Architect:
- Either Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an Engineering discipline with extensive practical design experience in outfitting and ship design will be considered
- You will ideally be a member of a relevant institution (e.g., RINA, IET, IMechE, IMarEst etc.) and either hold Chartered engineer status or working towards Chartered engineering status and be considered a subject matter expert in your field.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
