What is the job role?We are look for Accounting Technicians to work in both our Corporate Finance and Business Partnering teams, working to the Finance Business Partners to support the delivery of our statutory financial obligations and assist service managers in executing their financial responsibilities within service areas and delegated budgets.
Our Accounting Technicians are often the first point of contact for Budget Holders and external partners, providing support for day to day financial matters including budget management, budget monitoring, transaction processing and financial forecasts.
The main duties and responsibilities of these roles are:
Business Partnering:
-
Support budget holders and business partners within your service area to ensure budget setting processes are carried out effectively, including supporting with the preparation of quarterly forecasting information for service areas.

Providing advice and assistance about financial matters to non-financial managers including some training in the use of financial systems.

Assisting in the completion of grant claims and various statistical and analytical returns to ensure full use of external funding, and liaising with Auditors to support queries raised.

Responsibility for completing all scheduled Final Accounts tasks according to the agreed timetable and ensure transactions are carried out in line with internal policies and procedures.
Corporate Finance:

Forecasting the Council’s daily cash needs based on historic data and known events going forward including looking at different incomings (cash, card BACS) and outgoings (BACS). Identify and evaluate variances

Speaking with brokers to negotiate deals on borrowings and investments within pre-determined parameters

Making CHAPS, foreign and faster payments via the Council’s online banking system

Completing online statutory returns of investment balances and borrowings
-
Managing and reconciling investment balances held on behalf of partner organisations
Both roles require someone who works with an enquiring mindset with a view to continuous improvement, proactively engaging with stakeholders and colleagues to identify and highlight areas for review and improvement.
Who are we looking for?This is an excellent opportunity for an AAT Qualified Accounting Technician (or actively studying towards) who is self-motivated, enthusiastic, and keen to progress their career as an accountant.

You will have a good knowledge of accounting, an eye for detail and the confidence to provide support to a range of finance and non-finance professionals, while identifying improved ways of working.

You will work collaboratively and flexibly with other colleagues within the team, to provide an excellent level of finance support to the Council's services within agreed standards and deadlines.

You will have a positive outlook and have good communication skills in order to forge productive relationships with the service areas you support.

We are looking for an individual who is a problem solver and can demonstrate a high level of competence using Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
