About the role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Pre-Construction Manager to join our Power T&D team, the successful candidate should live within a commutable distance to either our Derby or Maxim office.
Power T&D is about to embark on a journey of unprecedented growth and has a series of Major Projects that will be developed through an initial Early Contractor Involvement/pre-construction phase;
- ECI and pre construction are a pivotal stage in the life cycle of a project - it connects business development to The work undertaken during this period influences every part of the delivery phase;
- The Pre-Construction Manager will be involved from the ECI Phase through detailed design, through to start on site;
- A key part of the role is to manage a seamless transition through the stages of our governance process - the Gated Lifecycle;
- This will include complying with governance, ensuring knowledge transfer, developing robust proposals and managing risk;
- This newly created role is to focus on the successful execution of ECI and Stage One contracts for our key clients SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission;
- It will also require interface with the wider Power T&D to draw on expertise, facilitate knowledge sharing, and work towards setting market leading standards
What you'll be doing
- Act as the lead day-to-day point of contact for the customer on allocated project/s working alongside the operational lead who will own the delivery solution;
- Alongside the operational lead, they will guide and motivate the pre-construction/ECI team for given project/s; coordinating deliverables of the team from feasibility proposal, throughout pre- construction (design development and scope definition) to formulation of final submission to secure a delivery agreement for construction;
- Support development of win strategies to successfully transition projects from feasibility/ECI, to pre-construction, to successful award of main site works;
- Work hand-in-hand with the proposals team to ensure feasibility and delivery agreement submissions are always to a high standard;
- Working closely with the Design Lead(s); ensure that either customers or Balfour Beatty are discharging their Principal Designer obligations under CDM 2015;
- Prepare monthly reporting material and articulate key messages to internal and external stakeholders;
- Inform workload planning to ensure resources are identified for feasibility proposals and pre-construction services;
- Continually seek opportunities to integrate innovation into our feasibility and pre-construction process;
- Assist project teams in the adoption of BIM Level 2 standards, 3D design and CGI modelling;
- Actively promote defects avoidance (designing out defects) and embed a structured method of lessons learnt within design and construction;
- Develop and implement a robust process to ensure projects are always ‘fit to start’ on site.
- Support during construction mobilisation with handover to project lead for construction stage.
- Lead on ensuring that the client is supported with its estimating, planning and regulatory submissions, ensuring that lessons learned are carried from one project to another.

- The role requires an individual who is organised, able to manage a broad range of stakeholders and implement strategies to overcome technical challenges;
- They will have the ability to bring the best out of the pre-construction team while drawing on the capability of other colleagues in the region and the wider business;
- The individual will be from an infrastructure background; with key attributes of technical civil engineering and/or electrical engineering capability combined with a collaborative mindset;
- The individual will be motivated by working in an environment with highly skilled colleagues where continuous improvement and teamwork are part of business as usual
