• Work independently with a pack team of up to four (4) llamas to service backcountry restroom facilities.
• The incumbent should be familiar with and have experience with llamas specifically.
• The main purpose of this position (as an Animal Packer (Custodial), at this level) is to hike to backcountry toilet facilities to process waste and recycling, leading llamas to pack tools and supplies in and solid waste out.
• Animal Packers must use and maintain equipment and operate vehicles and pickup trucks to transport supplies, materials and pack animals.

Physical Demands: When incumbent is maintaining backcountry toilets, he/she must be able to hike distances of 2 to 12 miles at elevations ranging from 7,500 feet to those exceeding 12,000 feet using a string of llamas to pack in supplies and equipment and waste out. Loads animals in a heavy duty pickup in order to transport them to trail heads. Light to moderate physical effort is required in performing custodial duties. Incumbent is required to walk, stand, bend, reach, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Working Conditions: Work indoors is performed in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. He/she is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in cleaning toilets, urinals, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. At risk for infectious diseases. Operates vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout the park. This position manages operations for Glacier Bay National Preserve and the Dry Bay Ranger Station and serves as the Federal Subsistence Coordinator. As a Park Ranger (P), major duties will include:

• Law Enforcement Operations: Detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of National Park resources.
• Public Use Management: Issue and oversee Special Use Permits, monitor permittee activities, educate, interpret, and inform permittees and visitors about resources, conservation, laws, and regulations.
• Subsistence Management: Serves at Subsistence Coordinator representing the NPS and Glacier Bay on management committees and with subsistence users.

Work Environment: The work environment is field work with some office work in the summer and the opposite in the winter. Field work of the incumbent regularly includes long periods of standing, hiking and/or climbing, in many cases on uneven steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, and medical related emergency activities. This position is located within the park boundary in Gardiner, MT. five miles north of Park Headquarters/Mammoth Hot Springs, WY where basic amenities are available (small grocery store, K-12 school, restaurants, motels, etc.). Full-service amenities are available 60 miles north in Livingston, MT and 90 miles northwest in Bozeman, MT. A small medical clinic is located at Mammoth Hot Springs. Temperatures in this area of the park vary from 70-90+ degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to sub-zero in the winter.

The North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance is the only road open to wheeled vehicles all year. Year-round visitation is steadily trending toward significant increases in autumn, winter, and spring. Mammoth Hot Springs is the only year-round, NPS visitor services operation in the park. Albright Visitor Center is open 364 days per year and currently closed Thanksgiving.

• Serve as Ecologist under the direction of the Branch Chief of Aquatic Wildlife of the Resources Management and Science Division in Yosemite National Park.
• Develop and implement science-based ecological management mitigation strategies for aquatic wildlife.

• Collect data using hand-held Juno GPS units while traveling in a concessioner-operated buses or a government vehicle transiting all or part of the 92-mile Denali Park Road.
• Collect data on wildlife sightings using binoculars and a range finder.

These positions are located at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in the Division of Interpretation, Education and Partnerships, and are supervised by the parks' Transportation Specialist. These parks receive significant visitation (~1.7 million annually) and administratively are among the most complex units of the National Park Service. These parks include some 550 permanent and temporary federal employees as well as over 1,000 volunteers who provide a wide range of public service and support operations which are similar to operations more typically found in a municipal city. These are five major divisions, each of which is further subdivided into functional branches.

Duties:

• Monitors vehicular traffic levels against pedestrian traffic and controls intersections with regards to safety and smooth flow of vehicles.
• Monitors parking lots, directing vehicles including buses and recreational vehicles to appropriate parking stalls.
• Answers a variety of visitor questions.
• Explains regulations to park visitors and provides information and advice on park activities and cultural, historic, and/or natural resources history and location.

• Coordinate biosecurity inspections schedule and work tasks, and work with contractors and park staff to accomplish biosecurity and weed management project goals

Park Information: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) is located on the island of Hawai'i, on the southeastern edge of the island, in the districts of Ka'u and Puna, between the towns of Hilo to the northeast and Kailua-Kona to the northwest. It is located 2,500 airline miles from the continental United States and over 250 miles from Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the major business, government, and industrial supply center for the state. The park was established in 1916 and encompasses two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa; a diverse geography that ranges from sea level to 13,677 feet in elevation; and protects rich biodiversity and Native Hawaiian culture. The park includes 335,259 acres of land, 123,100 acres of designated wilderness, 121,015 acres of eligible wilderness, 7,850 acres or potential wilderness. The Park is in an area of active volcanism and seismic activity, with frequent earthquakes, volcanic activity and a tropical environment experiencing 20-150 inches of rain a year. Multiple positions will be filled at multiple locations. Pay rates, start dates and amount of travel required will vary based on duty location. These seasonal positions cover plant-related work in three different fields:

• Lead Field crews to implement vegetation and ecological restoration project work.
• Make field observations of natural resource conditions. Record all data collected and ensure adequate quality control. Perform routine and recurring testing of collected samples.
• Utilize a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, and report data and other resource management information.
• Conduct routine resource monitoring programs for evaluating rare, threatened and endangered plant species, vegetation communities, population dynamics, ecosystem relationships, and public health/safety issues. Carry out a variety of field activities such as the plant surveys, control of non-native and invasive plant or insect species, revegetation, and enhancement of native plant populations.
• Utilize databases to enter and organize collected field data and uses standard statistical methods in the preparation of draft reports.
• Assist in preparing reports, plans, and guidelines. Maintain and organize computer databases.
• Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment. Perform equipment inventories, evaluate quality assurance compliance, order and calibrate parts and equipment/supplies.
• Provide training to others involved in resource management projects and field research.

At the GS-07 level, in addition to duties listed above, you may:

• Assist staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs. Schedule, coordinate and carry out a variety of field activities.
• Develop and using databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data using standard statistical methods.
• Provide work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians, volunteers, or YCC enrollees.
• Assist in preparing draft news releases and provide information to individuals, local organizations and schools.

At the GS-08 level, in addition to the duties listed above, you may:

• Coordinate the implementation of scientifically credible ecological restoration or vegetation projects
• Collect, maintain, summarize, and report on natural resource data in order to ensure highly credible data acquisition and reporting
• Provides advice, assistance, training to field crews, students, student conservation assistants, and volunteers involved in resource management projects and field research.
• Assist staff in planning field research and resource monitoring programs. Schedule, coordinate and carry out a variety of field activities.

OLYM NP only: Nursery work includes long hours of standing and performing repetitive tasks.

SEKI NP only: These positions involve forest management / monitoring in both front country and backcountry settings. Duties include tree hazard surveillance and forest pest management. Specific tasks include identification/evaluation of tree defects, tree measurements (i.e., dbh and height), record-keeping, mapping, and data entry into data-logger and/or computer.

MORA NP only: Train and Lead field crews in establishing and measuring whitebark pine monitoring plots in backcountry locations.

YOSE NP only: Serve as construction monitor for vegetation protection in new situations without well-established mitigations.

Klamath I&M Network only: These positions are for crew leads on our vegetation community monitoring and invasive species monitoring protocols. Crews work in remote, backcountry locations collecting long-term vegetation monitoring data.

At the GS-04 level: You serve as a crew member on invasive plant control and ecological restoration projects in the front country or wilderness areas. Duties include:

• Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.
• Identifying vascular plants to species level using dichotomous keys.
• Assisting with leading volunteers.
• Assisting with photo documentation of projects.
• Using a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Office software.
• Assisting in presenting educational programs to staff, volunteers and the public.
• Plant and tend native plants. Includes watering plants and collecting and distributing mulch.
• Collect and distribute native plant seed.

At the GS-05 level: You serve as a crew member on invasive plant control and ecological restoration projects in the front country or wilderness areas. Duties include:

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2025.

Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here. Starting at $17.35 Per Hour (GS 4-5)

The parks and duty stations hiring for these positions are below, as is each park's anticipated seasonal period. The typical seasonal period may vary during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April/May 2025.

• Lake Clark National Park & Preserve (Port Alsworth): May - October
• Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve & Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve (Fairbanks): May - August/September/October

Work includes, but is not limited to the following:
Assists professional staff in implementing wildlife inventory and monitoring programs for a variety of possible species including seabirds, water birds, passerine birds, amphibians, small mammals, ungulates, bears, raptors, etc. in the front country and the remote backcountry areas of Alaskan National Parks. (For bird positions, must identify all birds in the study areas by sight and sound (calls and songs)). Assists in planning, logistical arrangements, field work, data entry and result summarization. Selectee(s) will typically be stationed in the front country, but may be expected to live in primitive, remote backcountry camps in remote portions of the park for up to two weeks at a time, collecting natural resource data. Work includes field surveys to document and assess animal presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, and population dynamics in various areas of the park using established protocols and standard equipment (including GPS).

Selectee(s) will be required to: 1) safely hike long distances through mountainous terrain (on and off trail) in adverse weather conditions with a heavy backpack; 2) work and communicate closely with team members on extended field trips; and 3) navigate to plots off trail over rugged terrain, snowfields, dense vegetation, and streams. Work may be performed in areas frequented by bears (training on how to handle bear encounters will be given). Incumbents will use computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, ArcGIS, Pathfinder Office, etc.) to store, retrieve, manage and analyze data, generate maps, and assist with creating reports and recommendations for natural resources projects.

Additional clarification/duties for the GS-06 and GS-07 levels:

• Assists in analysis of data and completing reports or other documents related to the project.
• GPS mapping, GIS data management, map production, managing and manipulating digital images and web or journal-based research.
• Assists with other natural resource management projects, maintains and repairs field equipment, prepares for field trips, communicates resource management topics to park staff and visitors, implements bear-human interaction, including conducting/leading aversive conditioning on black or brown bears.

Additional clarification/duties for the GS-07 level:

• Participates in planning, managing, conducting, analyzing data and writing reports on a variety of wildlife oriented biological surveys, monitoring and research activities.
• Weather data collection, water quality data collection, and web or journal-based research and training other employees and volunteers to efficiently conduct these tasks.

At least one position at Bartlett Cove may be filled with the following additional duties:
This is primarily an office-based position to assist professional staff with data management for a humpback whale research and monitoring program in a remote backcountry setting. Keeping up with incoming data during a busy field season will require that you: 1) download, label and manage photographs and observation data daily, 2) use fluke identification photographs to identify individual whales, and 3) assist once per week on whale surveys which involve long hours out on the water in a small boat in rain, sun, cold, and wind. During weekly fieldwork you will 1) assist with documenting whale observations under standardized protocols and 2) assist with driving the research vessel after initial training.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Starting at $21.42 Per Hour (GS 5-7)

These positions are in the division of Visitor and Resource Protection. Incumbents are assigned to the Preventive Search and Rescue (PSAR) program under Yosemite Emergency Services. PSAR rangers are based in the Yosemite Valley with patrol locations throughout the park.

The PSAR program aims to reduce injuries and fatalities in Yosemite through public outreach, including social media, formal presentations, and relevant and timely signage. PSAR rangers conduct informal public outreach while on day hikes, overnight patrols, and staffing information tables. Rangers provide visitors with information on current conditions, help with trip planning, and discuss potential safety concerns. They help enforce park regulations through education. PSAR rangers also provide oversight for the daily activities of PSAR interns and volunteers.

PSAR Rangers participate in Search and Rescue and Emergency Medical response. They are responsible for maintaining PSAR, SAR, and EMS equipment and vehicles. PSAR Rangers may participate in advanced training such as Technical Rope Rescue or Aviation training based on their prior training and experience. As part of the all-hazard emergency response team PSAR rangers may be required to drive an ambulance.

Physical Demands: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.

Work Environment: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures and adverse weather conditions.

Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.
