• Serves as a lead wildland firefighter and member of the wildland fire module.
• Directs the work of a small crew of firefighters in building firelines, burnout, mopping up, and patrolling firelines.
• Performs administrative lead duties such as: timekeeping, travel, government credit card managements, maintaining records, etc.
• Applies an understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography of the area, weather, fuels, and training in fire management.
• Plans action and directs utilization of fire line resources.
• Directs assigned suppression operations and recommends and implements tactical strategies on fires.
• Directs the operation and use of special tools and equipment.
• Directs and ensures proper equipment and supplies needed for fire assignments.
• Manages fuels projects such as: prescribed fire, mechanical and biological treatments, inventorying fuel beds, and piling vegetation debris.
• Performs wildland fire suppression/management/control functions.
• Participates in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices and methods of fire suppression.
• Gathers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.

• Communicates with the public regarding safety, fire prevention, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities.
• Prepares and presents a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs to include but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs.
• Plans and preforms day-to-day operations/maintenance of a recreation area or site that provides such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, trails and/or other recreational opportunities.
• Oversees fee collection activities, maintaining records on and accounting for funds, and submitting deposits, reviewing visitor use patterns and their effect on resources.
• Patrols and inspects facilities and trails ensuring compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, campfires, noise level, sanitation, and safety.
• Handles conflicts or violations, bringing them to the attention of visitors and, if appropriate, issues notices of violations.

A Wildland Firefighter (GS-03) performs assignments as an entry level wildland firefighter crew member in developing a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques, practices, and terminology; may assist in more specialized assignments such as backfire and burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack.

A Wildland Firefighter (GS-04) is a trained wildland firefighter. May be assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire, and burnout operations; utilizes a variety of specialized tools, equipment and techniques while actively managing wildfires. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

A Wildland Firefighter (GS-05) is a trained and experienced wildland firefighter performing all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding and mop-up. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

• If selected at the GS-9 or GS-11 grade level, the incumbent will perform the duties of the position, with a reduced level of responsibility and/or difficulty, while receiving on-the-job trainee assignments or other appropriate training.
• At the full performance GS-12 level, incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
• Performs technical review and makes recommendations for approval of all down-hole operations.
• Analyzes complex operational programs that ensure adequate resource protection including cement types and placement techniques, alternative fluids, and corresponding evaluation tests.
• Provides professional petroleum engineering and regulatory review of Sundry Notice applications for oil and gas operations.
• Coordinates and provides input and recommendations to the reservoir management group.
• Identifies potential drainage situations using standard engineering and economic principles and determines Indian Diligence Development.
• Provides technical oil and gas support and when appropriate, prepares reasonably foreseeable development scenarios necessary for any revisions to the RMP or Programmatic Assessments associated with the Field Office.
• Provides technical expertise and support to the Petroleum Engineering Technicians and Petroleum Accounting Technicians concerning oil and gas inspection and enforcement issues.
• Serves as a subject matter expert pertaining to petroleum engineering issues in his/her respective office. This responsibility may include providing expert testimony in the litigation process.
• Prepares written correspondence regarding leases, agreements, and inspection and enforcement issues.
