The Deputy Director Data for Research is responsible for delivery of this programme working closely with the programme SRO and the Director of Research. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a GMPP programme managing a talented and driven team.

We are seeking an experienced senior leader who has extensive experience of delivering large complex programmes across departments withan in depth specialist knowledge of the NHS data for research ecosystem including the infrastructure, architecture and policy.

The ability to work effectively with key stakeholders including the life sciences industry, academia, NHS R&D community, voluntary and charitable sector organisations is key to successful delivery and the successful applicant will have a track record of building strong collaborations with partners and stakeholders. An in depth understanding of the issues inherent in the use of patient data for purposes other than direct care is essential as is the need to ensure patient and public involvement is at the heart of decision making.

The successful applicant will be an active and visible IRLSS SLT member with proven ability to build high performing teams, fostering an environment for individuals and the team to thrive.

SPEER works strategically with academia, industry and public sector/government to further build upon and grow Scotland’s energy and engineering research excellence to drive global competitiveness and socio-economic impact. SPEER has recently formed from the integration of two world-class pan-Scottish partnerships; the Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering (SRPe) (www.srpe.ac.uk) and the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP) (www.etp-scotland.ac.uk). The SPEER Engineering Pillar is managed in accordance with the SRPe approach, and the SPEER Energy Pillar in accordance with the ETP approach. Based at the state-of-the-art Technology & Innovation Centre in Glasgow, the SPEER Deputy Director of Energy will be a high calibre versatile professional with a wide range of skills who can manage all aspects of SPEER strategic, operational and project delivery. Due to the integrated nature of the partnership, you will work closely with the SPEER Deputy Director (Engineering) to identify areas of synergy between the Engineering and Energy Strategies and develop joint initiatives. Your main activities and responsibilities will be across the full range of engineering focused SPEER activities, including management and oversight of partnership-wide SPEER funded initiatives and programmes; design, development and delivery of strategic investment cases, strategic initiatives/programmes, collaborative proposals and workshops; identifying and developing new collaborations with academia, industry and public sector, horizon scanning, identification and monitoring of collaborative funding opportunities; organisation and delivery of conferences, events and workshops; marketing and communications; management and coordination of early career researcher skills development/training initiatives; budget management and financial reporting; project delivery and progress tracking; development of databases, and day-to-day operational management and supervision of the SPEER executive office team.

To be considered for the role you must be educated to a minimum of degree level in a relevant discipline, or with equivalent relevant experience within the higher education, public or industry sectors. You will have extensive experience across stakeholder management, cross-sectoral collaborative strategic proposal / investment case development and workshop delivery, marketing and communications, conference and events management, strategic initiative and collaborative project development and delivery, project management and project performance monitoring, financial management and general operational delivery management and staff supervision, ideally within an industry facing higher education collaborative research environment.

In addition to having excellent interpersonal, organisational & planning, management, communication and IT skills, you must have the versatility and drive to embrace new challenges. Your main activities and responsibilities will be across the full range of engineering focused SPEER activities, including management and oversight of partnership-wide SPEER funded initiatives and programmes; design, development and delivery of strategic investment cases, strategic initiatives/programmes, collaborative proposals and workshops; identifying and developing new collaborations with academia, industry and public sector, horizon scanning, identification and monitoring of collaborative funding opportunities; organisation and delivery of conferences, events and workshops; marketing and communications; management and coordination of early career researcher skills development/training initiatives; budget management and financial reporting; project delivery and progress tracking; development of databases, and day-to-day operational management and supervision of the SPEER executive office team.

To be considered for the role you must be educated to a minimum of degree level in a relevant discipline, or with equivalent relevant experience within the higher education, public or industry sectors. You will have extensive experience across stakeholder management, cross-sectoral collaborative strategic proposal / investment case development and workshop delivery, marketing and communications, conference and events management, strategic initiative and collaborative project development and delivery, project management and project performance monitoring, financial management and general operational delivery management and staff supervision, ideally within an industry facing higher education collaborative research environment.

In addition to having excellent interpersonal, organisational & planning, management, communication and IT skills, you must have the versatility and drive to embrace new challenges. Many aspects of delivery will be non-prescriptive and you must be able to operate proactively with a high degree of flexibility, and with a high level of motivation and personal initiative.

The Opportunity:

Child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) is a global problem that requires a global response. However, the lack of reliable and comprehensive data relating to CSEA is a major inhibitor to developing more effective and evidence driven prevention and response strategies and policies.

Many gaps in the evidence-base around the prevalence and nature of CSEA globally still exist with many ethical and methodological challenges in this area. This is a major inhibitor to developing more effective and evidence driven prevention and response strategies and policies. Without data and analysis, programmes are more difficult to design, deliver and evaluate; evidence is difficult to generate and credibly defend; narratives and definitions that frame the issue are difficult to construct; policy is difficult to advocate for and funding is difficult to access. Without high-quality data that can guide policy and programmes, children continuing to be at risk for child sexual exploitation and abuse and perpetrators have impunity.

This post will provide senior research leadership through a Professorial Chair position and also serve as the Director of European Hub for Childlight – seeking to grow and improve our data partnerships, prevalence estimates and impact in this region. The postholder will also be required to focus on other regions and/or global data projects as needed.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and on an open-ended basis with a contract review date of 30 April 2028.



Your skills and attributes for success:

An outstanding academic profile, with a PhD (in the fields of public health including social or clinical epidemiology and other associated areas) and an established track-record of internationally-excellent research relating to CSEA
Expertise in the area of child sexual exploitation and abuse epidemiological research that has had a demonstrable impact including in the European region.
Experience of leadership in research and attracting funding as a PI of research grants and in knowledge exchange through effective public engagement.
Excellent portfolio of high-quality research publications in child protection research that display research excellence
Proven track record of working with child protection system actors (police, health, etc)
A passion for making the world a better place and preventing CSEA, improving services and safeguarding children

Develop the infrastructure across the NHS for a federated network of national and sub national secure data environments offering a single front door to NHS data for research Lead and work closely with colleagues across the Transformation Directorate to enable matrix working across sub directorates to ensure alignment and collaboration in delivery to support data enabled research and specifically delivery of the Data for R&D programme Represent the Data For R&D programme at high-level engagement with Arms-Length Bodies, across Government, with industry, and all other stakeholders across the health and care system. Drive and challenge work across health regulators to ensure that the regulatory system supports wide-spread data-driven research and better partnerships with researchers and innovators. All with the aim of harnessing value for the NHS. Work across internal and external stakeholders to ensure patient and public involvement and engagement is at the heart of decision making and is embedded in the programme Champion and promote at every opportunity the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion, whilst also driving continual improvements to support a diverse and inclusive workforce.
